FAAC (Federation of African and Creole Associations) and FÉDÉRATION
TOTAL RESPECT | TJENBÉ RÈD (which brings together ten organisations who
fight against all forms of racism and homophobia, and against AIDS) is
disappointed to hear about new regulations introduced by AIR FRANCE
dealing with the hairstyles of its black staff. We demand that Dominique
Baudis, official Defender of Rights, should start a new examination of these
regulations.
A black French steward, M. Aboubakar Traoré, who has been otherwise
congratulated on the quality of his work, has since December 2004 been
subject to a strict reading of these regulations because he stopped having his
hair cut short and kept them in plaited tresses across his scalp.
Since then, Mr Traoré has been refused access to the planes in which he was
supposed to fly and has suffered losses in salary. He has been asked to wear a
wig or cut off his tresses.
The High Authority for the struggle against all forms of discrimination and for
equality (HALDE) had asked AIR FRANCE to bring these difficulties, which it
considered “disproportionate”, to an end. However, its successor, the
Defender of Rights, seems to be satisfied with a revision by the airline of its
“rules for the wearing of the uniform” which does not change the situation in
the least. After detailed legal consideration, and not being afraid of looking
ridiculous, AIR FRANCE, which previously had complained that Mr Traoré did
not have a “standard” hairstyle, now complains that it does not “fit in” (sic).
Now that Mr Traoré has been called to a preliminary interview with the
prospect of disciplinary action, FAAC and TOTAL RESPECT both demand that
AIR FRANCE undertake a new examination of its regulations.
