J’adore les arômes de l’été! Surtout l’arôme des pêches au
marché fermier, mais aussi celui de la menthe et du basilic qui
parfume mon jardin.
C’est la saison des célébrations de l’abondance des fruits et
légumes frais et les célébrations de terroir: les melons de
Cavaillon en France ou des melons “aphrodite” ici du H & H
Farms à Hernando, Mississippi (ces derniers sont superbes et ils
sont à vendre tous les samedis au marché fermier de
Germantown).
Pour une bonne introduction à l’idée du terroir dans le sud de la
France visitez le site web www.edibleheritage.com. Là il y a une
“app” qui vous aidera à trouver des restaurants, des marchés, et
des endroits intéressants à Aix en Provence et aux environs. Il y
a aussi des introductions courtes aux recettes, aux traditions de
la table provençale et aux produits d’Appelation d'Origine
Controlée.
L’été est le temps pour les repas simples et les piques-niques.
Venez nous joindre le 15 juillet pour célébrer la Fête Nationale
avec un pique-nique suivi d’un jeu de boules (voir page numero 5
pour les details).
Si vous partez en vacances n’oubliez pas d’emmener un bon
livre. La Mediathèque offre plusieurs titres nouveaux et nous
enverrons bientôt une liste courante aux membres. Et si vous
allez en France ou ailleurs dans la Francophonie pensez s.v.p. à
rapporter un petit souvenir pour la vente aux enchères
silencieuse de l’AFM du mois de novembre. Tous les dons sont
bien acceuillis et le comité vous remercie pour votre aide.

Announcements
If you are traveling this summer please remember the
Alliance Française de Memphis!!
Every November the AFM throws a wonderful party to
coincide with the launching of the Beaujolais Nouveau. At
that event we traditionally hold a silent auction as well.
Over the years, the auctions have been important fund
raisers for our chapter. The items auctioned are
donated by members and the proceeds of the auction go
towards special events which would not otherwise be
possible to host through dues alone.
At this time I'd like to remind members who may be traveling to France or to other parts of
La Francophonie (New Orleans, Quebec, Belgium, St. Martin, Senegal and other places) to
bring home a souvenir (or two!) to be auctioned on November 17th to benefit the AFM .
Please consider donating books, table & kitchen linens, paper goods, art works, soaps &
perfumes, non-perishable food items, fashion items and household goods. Anything that
invokes the culture and spirit of France or La Francophonie!

treat; please be prepared to order food).

Bastille Day
We call it "Bastille Day", but in France, it's called "La Fête Nationale".
It is not only a celebration of the storming of the Bastille, but the start
of the modern nation of France under a constitutional monarchy.
According to many sources, the purpose of storming the prison was
not primarily to free the prisoners, but to get the arms and ammunition
stored within the fortress.
A parade down the Champs- Élysées starts the festivities of the
day, with all branches of the military represented, including planes flying
overhead. If you have never seen the parade in person, there are some
good videos on YouTube.
Bastille Day Fireworks
If you want to celebrate La Fête Nationale in Memphis, here are a
couple of events:

includes valet parking. Wine and alcoholic
beverages are available for an additional
charge. Jacket and tie requested for attire.

Our own Bastille Day celebration will take place on Sunday July 15th with a picnic
with a French flair and a boules tournament at the shaded pavilion at Johnson Road
Park in Germantown from 5-8pm. The cost will be $10 per person; free for children
under 14. Johnson Road Park is at 2970 Johnson Road, off Poplar, just east of ForestHill Irene. There is another Johnson Park in Collierville, so please be careful you don't
go to the wrong one!

Alliance Francaise International Photo Competition

La 3ème édition de notre Concours Photo international sera consacrée aux métiers du monde.
Le titre définitif n’a pas encore été retenu, mais vous pouvez commencer à travailler sur ce
thème. Il s’agira de montrer les hommes et les femmes à travers l’extraordinaire diversité de
leurs métiers, dans leur beauté comme dans leur dureté. Ce sera aussi l’occasion de faire
découvrir des métiers singuliers issus des traditions et de porter un regard sur leur évolution.
Des aménagements dans l’organisation interviendront à la rentrée à la Fondation. C’est
Laurence Lalatonne, responsable de l’action culturelle, qui reprendra la coordination de cette
belle opération lancée avec succès par Candice du Chayla. Vous serez informés avant la fin
du mois d’août des détails techniques concernant ce concours, mais les grandes lignes de
son organisation seront les mêmes que pour les deux précédentes éditions :
création d’un jury propre à chaque Alliance,
sélection d’un lauréat par Alliance,
envoi des photos à la Fondation qui les soumettra à un jury de personnalités
qualifiées.
Médiatheque

As you know, the Memphis Public Library generously donated to us
two boxes of books. These are now part of our Médiatheque, our
collection of books, DVDs, CDs, etc, in French. I have now finished
copying all the titles into a list, which will be distributed to our
members via a separate email.
I'm going to be very frank about the Médiatheque: it hasn't been widely used up until now.
Quel dommage! So perhaps some of these new titles will grab your attention. As you will see,
there are plenty of classics, perhaps too many! (The books must have belonged to a French
professor or student.) But there are also quite a few novels, and I was interested to see
several by French-speaking writers from Africa. I bet you haven't read any of those yet! And
another thing: we have more than one copy of certain titles, such as L'étranger by Albert
Camus. We have three copies of that, which could potentially become the start of a little book
club.
Now a reminder about how to borrow one of these books. There are too many, now, for me to
bring them all to an event but I plan to bring a selection to each event. If you email me in
advance and let me know what you'd like to browse, I'll bring them. And of course you can
always email me and we can make other arrangements. My email address is

And now, an apology (surtout a nos membres qui sont français): I only know how to write the
accent aigu (é) so some of the other accents are missing. Je m'excuse.
