Die Präsentation beginnt mit einer kurzen Vorstellung der Themenschwerpunkte, die alle urbanen
Welterbestätten (WHSs) im Vereinigten Königreich betreffen und die zu wiederholten UNESCO-ICOMOSMissionen nach Bath, Edinburgh, Liverpool und London geführt haben. Ehe ich näher auf die Welterbestätte „Alt- und Neustadt von Edinburgh“ eingehe, möchte ich am Rande meiner Präsentation die einzige
andere urbane Welterbestätte in Schottland, nämlich die Fabriksiedlung New Lanark kurz streifen.
Dieser Schwerpunkt fasst die verschiedenen urbanen Erhaltungsinitiativen und Entwicklungsprioritäten
zusammen, die seit den 1960iger Jahren in Edinburgh zu verzeichnen sind, ebenso ihren Beitrag in dem
Bestreben um integrierte Politikansätze und Maßnahmen.
Die Präsentation geht abschließend auf wichtige Herausforderungen der jüngsten Zeit für die Welterbestätte Edinburgh ein, die vor Ort und bei der UNESCO Anlass zu Besorgnis gegeben haben, auf die eingeleiteten Abhilfemaßnahmen und auf deren Beitrag zur Stärkung von integrierten Stadtentwicklungsprozessen zum Nutzen des globalen und nationalen städtebaulichen Erbes Schottlands.

This presentation will open by outlining key issues that affect all urban World Heritage Sites (WHSs) in
the United Kingdom and have led to repeated UNESCO-ICOMOS missions to Bath, Edinburgh, Liverpool
and London. It will then refer in passing to the New Lanark WHS, the ‘factory village’ (company town) that
is the only other urbanised WHS in Scotland, whereafter it will focus on the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh WHS.
This focus will summarise the various urban conservation initiatives and development priorities that
have evolved in Edinburgh since the 1960s and their contribution to the quest for integrated policies and
actions.
It will conclude with reference to key recent challenges in the Edinburgh WHS that have provoked concerns within the local community and by UNESCO, the measures that are being taken to address these,
and the contribution they may make towards consolidating integrated urban development processes to
the benefit of both the world and national urban heritage of Scotland.
