– „Still! Dodo, dodo, l’enfant, do!» Eiapopeia, schlaf schön, mein Kind.“ «Femme, contiens ton effroi! L’aube incertaine a pâli ta fenêtre... Triste, dolente, longtemps tu fis la garde; oh! sois clémente, pitié!» «Tout ira mieux, la souffrance s’apaise. Dodo, dodo, l’enfant, do!» «Pars, ô maudite Mort! Pars: tes caresses vont me ravir mon enfant!» «Vois donc, mon chant a bien su l’endormir. Dodo, dodo, l’enfant, do!» O, ich ersticke dich in meinen starken Armen, höre mein Liebeslied!...Schweig!...Du gehörst mir!“ 6 7 Pesni i plyaski smerti Songs and Dances of Death I: Kolïbel’naya Stonyet rebyonok... Slookh tvoi plyenilsa moyei serenadoi, Ritsarya shopot tvoi zval, Ritsar prishol za poslyednyei nagradoi; Serenade Soft and tender is the night, in the soft shadow of spring... The invalid leans out of the window seeking the silence of the night. Sleep is escaping once more, the joys of life are so tempting. Yet beneath the window in the silence Death sings its serenade. “In the lonely sadness of darkness your youth is fast disappearing. But I shall be your faithful knight and rescue you with magic powers. Come, look at yourself in this mirror, see your image shining with beauty, your cheeks are rosy, your hair is shiny, your supple body is like breath itself. Your eyes are blue, brighter even than the skies above. Your breath burns like the midday sun. You have conquered my love! You have fallen under the spell of my serenade, the knight has captured your love, he has come for the final reward: Chas oopoyenya nastal. Nyezhen tvoi stan, oopoityelen tryepyet... the hour of fulfilment has come. Your gentle form is trembling in my arms... O, zadooshoo ya tyebya V kryepkikh obyatyakh; lyubovni moi lyepyet Slooshai...Molchi...ti moya!” Oh, I shall strangle you with my strong embrace; I will sing of love to you, listen...be quiet...you are mine!” The mother looks around her, fearfully... Vyuga i plachet i stonyet, Chooyetsa, boodto vo mrake nochnom, Zlaya kovoto khoronit; Glyad, tak i yests! Trepak The fields are empty, the forest deserted, The winds are lamenting and howling; it is as if, in this dark night, the dead are being buried; yes, that’s right! In the darkness Death is wooing a poor peasant, invites him to dance the trepak with her and softly sings to him: “Oh, my dearest little peasant, you are drunk, and so tired, and this terrible snowstorm has led you astray in this deep forest. You have little else but sadness and hunger, so why not lie down and sleep, dearest! I shall warm you with layers of snow and entertain you with a gay dance. Let the storm make a bed of snow! Marshem torzhestvyenim mimo proiditye, The Field Marshal The battle rages, swords are flashing, the roar of hungry guns is heard, squadrons and horses gallop around you, and bloody rivers, rushing streams. ’Tis midday, yet the fight continues; at sunset the battle rages on; the night approaches, yet neither side will yield. Then night fell upon the battlefield. The armies dispersed into the darkness... All is now quiet, and in the mists of night a moan rose up towards the heavens. Then, in the pale light of the moon, riding upon his faithful mount, bones glittering and shining, Death appeared. In the silence of night, amongst the moans and prayers, as he were some proud war captain he performed his rounds. He climbs a hillock, looks around him, stops a while, smiling... His voice rings clearly over the field of battle: “The fight is over! I have won! All soldiers have been conquered! Life separated you, I joined you! Stand up for the roll-call! You will march to a glorious tune, Voisko moyo ya khochoo soschitats: V zyemlyu potom svoi kosti slozhitye, Sladko ot zhizni v zyemlye otdikhats. I wish to take stock of my forces; afterwards, you may lay your bones under the earth, and sweetly rest for ever. Godi nyezrimo proidoot za godami, V lyuduakh ischyeznyet i pamats o vas. Ya nye zaboodoo i gromko nad vami, Years will pass by and you will all be forgotten. But I will remember you Pir boodoo pravits v poloonochni chas! and celebrate at midnight! Plyaskoi tyazhelo zyemlyu sirooyu, Ya pritopchoo, chtobi syen grobovooyu, Kosti pokinoots vovyek nye mogli, Chtob nikogda vam nye vstats iz zemli!” I shall dance upon the earth, heavily, so that the soil around your bones will tightly hold them in place, and you will never rise again!” Golenischtschev-Kutusov Transliteration & English translation Myron Morris, 1964/7 (adapted)
