Teacher Training: German American Day - Transatlantic Relations, Immigration, Current Trends
Thursday 23rd October 2014 , 8.45 - 16.30: Jugendherberge Nürnberg, Burg 2, 90403 Nürnberg.
The participation fee of 10€ includes lunch, beverages and coffee.
The German-American Day is an American holiday, which celebrates German-American heritage and commemorates the 6th of October 1683, when German families landed in Philadelphia. They
later founded Germantown (Pennsylvania) - the first German settlement on American soil. In 2014 the number of American citizens with a history of German immigration comprises about 50
million people. Every sixth American can trace their roots back to Germany, which makes it the most frequently reported ancestry.
To remember this important step towards German-American friendship, the DAI, in cooperation with Regionale Lehrerfortbildung Gymnasien Mittelfranken (RLFB), is hosting its first very own
German-American Day.
To register, please use FIBS (M045-0/14/73). Accepted participants will have to fill out a registration form that can be downloaded from km.bayern.de/mb-mittelfranken.

Prof. Dr. Matthias Fifka: "Transatlantic Relations at the Crossroads"
Since the Iraq War in 2003, transatlantic relations have been a “bag of mixed feelings”. On the one hand, issues such as the so-called “spy scandal” and the
Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) have brought political and economic differences to light. On the other hand, the crisis in the Ukraine and
the Middle East demonstrate that Europeans and Americans share substantial strategic interests and can hardly act independently. The presentation will
discuss current key issues in transatlantic relations with a focus on economic aspects.
Prof. Dr. Matthias Fifka is currently teaching at the FAU in Erlangen as well as a visiting professor at Universities in Dallas (USA), Shanghai (China), Angers
(France) and in Maastricht (Holland). Here, his focuses lay on topics such as Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility as well as the political and
economic sytem of the USA (amongst others). Also, he is functioning as the vice director of the German-American Institute in Nürnberg.
Dr. Christina Ziegler-McPherson: “Where Did All of These German Americans Come From? Assimilation and Ethnic Identity in the United States in the 20th Century.”
In the early 21st Century, millions of Americans continue to identify themselves as German American, despite the fact that immigration from Germany to the
United States has not been statistically significant since the 1950s. Why and how does German American as an ethnic identity persist? How did German
immigrants and their descendants shape American ideas about assimilation, pluralism, and ethnic and national identity in the 20th Century?
Dr. Christina Ziegler-McPherson is a public historian from New York City, who concentrates on immigration, ethnic studies and social welfare policy history.
She worked as a guest curator for the Museum of the City of New York and the Hoboken Historical Museum, published two books and several articles about
immigration and assimilation. In this Fall semester she is teaching an immigration history course at the University of Bremen on a Fulbright Senior Scholarship
Award.

Workshop 1
Josh Elder
"Reading With Pictures: A Seminar on How and Why to Use Comics in the Classroom "
Josh Elder, an award-winning graphic novelist (Mail Order Ninja, Adventures of Superman, Comics That Make Kids Smarter) and founder of the nonprofit
literacy organization Reading With Pictures , will discuss how comics and graphic novels can enhance student engagement, improve the efficiency of instruction
and increase overall educational efficacy in virtually any subject. Resources detailing best practices and recommended reading lists will be provided to all
attendees.
Workshop 2
Dr. Markus Hünemörder, LMU München
"Immigration and the United States: Of Melting Pots and Border Fences"
Workshop 3
Dr. Hünemörders seminar will examine immigration to the United States as a historical, social, cultural, and political phenomenon focusing on recent and
current issues. Furthermore, the course will examine the many metaphors that have been offered for the process of integrating immigrants: the “melting pot”,
the “salad bowl”, the “stew” and even the “pizza”. Immigration has been the source of sharp political and social conflict. The lecture will analyze these conflicts
and put them in perspective.
Shira Richman, Writer & Instructor, Nürnberg
"Identity in Immigration Literature"
Shira Richman is an American author and teacher who published several poems and short stories. In her workshop "Identity in Immigration Literature" she will
explore and examine concepts of identity in american fiction. Different examples of the diverse immigrant american experience can be found in recent writing.
She will bring books that reflect on immigrant experiences made by young protagonists. You will be prepared with a guide how to use these books in the
classroom. These discussions can then be combined with practical writing experiences dealing with your students own background.
