Herstellungsverfahren
Das ätherische Orangenöl wird durch kalte Pressung der äußeren Fruchtschalen der Früchte der
süßen Valencia Orange (Citrus sinensis) gewonnen. In den äußeren, schwammartigen Schichten der
Schale sitzen kleine Bereiche, die das ätherische Öl speichern. Diese Ölkammern können leicht
mechanisch geöffnet und entleert werden. Durch die Nicht-Mischbarkeit der organischen Bestandteile
des ätherischen Öles und des in der Schale enthaltenen Wassers findet eine spontane Phasentrennung
statt, so dass das reine ätherische Öl abgeschieden werden kann. Die Ausbeute liegt zwischen 0.4 und
0.5%.[1,2]
Manufacturing method
The essential orange oil is obtained by cold pressing of the outer peel of the fruit of the sweet Valencia orange
(Citrus sinensis). Small areas, which can accumulate the essential oil, are located in the outer spongy layers of
the peel. These oil chambers can be opened mechanically and drained. Due to the non miscibility of the organic
compounds with water from the peel, the phases readily separate and the essential oil can be easily separated. The
yield of oil is between 0.4 and 0.5%.[1,2]
Botanischer Ursprung des Orangenöls
Die Art süße Valencia Orange (Citrus sinensis) gehört zur
Gattung der Citrusfrüchte (Citrus) in der Familie der
Rautengewächse (Rutaceae) in der Ordnung Seifenbaumartige
(Sapindales). Sie ist eine der vier Sorten, in die die süße Orange
eingeteilt wird. Neben der süßen Valencia Orange gibt es noch
die Blutorange (pigmentierte Orangen), die Navelorangen und
die säurefreien Orangen. Im nördlichen Deutschland ist auch die
Bezeichnung Apfelsine (= Apfel aus China) gebräuchlich. Die
Orange ist ein Hybrid aus der Pampelmuse (Citrus maxima) und
der Mandarine (Citrus reticulata) und entstand vermutlich im
südlichen China. Heutige Verbreitungsgebiete sind der
Mittelmeerraum, Brasilien und die Westindischen Inseln. Die
Orange ist ein immergrüner Baum, der bis zu 10 m hoch
wachsen kann. Die leicht biegsamen Zweige sind mit bis zu 8 cm
langen Dornen besetzt. Die Blätter sind oval förmig und zur
Spitze hin ausgezogen. Der Baum entwickelt weiße, stark
duftende Blüten, aus denen sich die rundlichen Früchte entwickeln.[3]

Botanical origin of essential blood orange oil
The species sweet Valencia orange belongs in the genus Citrus, in the family of Rutaceae in the order of
Sapindales. It is one of four varieties, in which the sweet orange is divided. In addition the sweet Valencia
orange, there are the blood orange (pigmented oranges), navel oranges and acid-free oranges. The orange is a
hybrid between pomelo (Citrus maxima) and mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) and is presumably native to
South China. Today, the orange grows around the Mediterranean sea, in Brasilia and the West Indian Islands.
The orange is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 10 meters. The slightly flexible branches are staffed by up to
8 cm long thorns. The leaves are oval formed and drawn out towards the tip. The tree develops white, very
fragrant flowers, which develops the roundish fruits.[3]
Charakterisierung
Das ätherische Orangenöl ist eine leicht bewegliche, gelbe bis gelb-bräunliche Flüssigkeit. Es hat einen
fruchtig-frischen Duft, mit charakteristischen Citrus-Noten. Das ätherische Orangenöl löst sich unter
Trübung in Alkohol (1:8, Ethanol 90%), Pflanzenölen und anderen ätherischen Ölen. Es ist nahezu
unlöslich in Wasser. Hauptbestandteil mit einem Gehalt bis zu 95% ist Limonen. Myrcen, Citral (Neral
und Geranial), Octanal und Decanal sind in geringeren Konzentrationen enthalten. [2]
Characterization
The essential orange oil is an easily movable, yellow to yellow-brownish liquid. It has a fruity-fresh scent with
characteristic lemon notes. The essential orange oil is easily soluble in alcohol (light clouding, 1:8, ethanol
90%), vegetable oils and other essential oils. It is almost not soluble in water. Main compound with a content up
to 95% is limonene. Myrcene, citral (neral and geranial), octanal and decanal are included in lower
concentrations.[2]
Arzneiliche Verwendung, Phytotherapie
Die Inhaltsstoffe des ätherischen Orangenöls besitzen eine Reihe von gesundheitlich relevanten
Eigenschaften. Neuere Studien haben gezeigt, dass ätherisches Orangenöl starke antiseptische
Wirkungen besitzt. Es kann bei Dyspepsie auf den Bauch aufgetragen oder innerlich verabreicht
werden. Ätherisches Orangenöl eignet sich auch zur antiseptischen Reinigung von Gegenständen. Bei
Krämpfen im Verdauungstrakt, Appetitmangel, Erbrechen und Übelkeit sowie allgemeinen
Verdauungsbeschwerden kann ätherisches Orangenöl als Massageöl oder Ölbad aufgrund seiner
spasmolytischen (krampflösenden) und karminativen (verdauungsfördernden) Wirkungen
angewandt werden. Bei entzündlichen Erkrankungen der Haut (Akne, Furunkel) kann ätherisches
Orangenöl als Auftragung oder Ölbad eingesetzt werden und wirkt entzündungshemmend. Auch bei
Zellulite kann es aufgrund seiner adstringierenden (zusammenziehenden) Wirkung als Massageöl
oder Ölbad eingesetzt werden.[4,5]

Medical use, phytotherapy
The compounds of essential orange oil have a number of health-related properties. Recent studies have shown
that essential orange oil has strong antiseptic effects. It can be applied to the stomach area with dyspepsia or
administered internally. Essential orange oil is also suitable for the antiseptic cleaning of objects. For cramps in
the digestive tract, loss of appetite, vomiting and nausea, and general indigestion, essential orange oil can be
applied as a massage oil or oil bath due to its spasmolytic (antispasmodic) and carminative (digestive) effects. In
inflammatory skin disorders (acne, boils) essential orange oil can be used as an ointment or oil bath and is antiinflammatory. Even with cellulite it can be used for its astringent effect as a massage oil or oil bath.[4,5]
Aromatherapie
In der Aromatherapie wird ätherisches Orangenöl aufgrund seiner sedierenden (beruhigenden)
Wirkung bei allgemeinen Ängsten und Nervosität sowie bei Schlafstörungen und neurovegetativer
Dystonie in der Duftlampe, als Zusatz zu Massageölen oder als Ölbad angewandt. Der Duft des
ätherischen Orangenöls verbreitet ein Gefühl der Weite und führt zu einer tiefen Entspannung.[4,5]
Ölmischung bei Schlafstörungen:
5 Tr. Orangenöl
3 Tr. Kamillenöl römisch
3 Tr. Lavendelöl
2 Tr. Vetiveröl
50 mL Mandelöl
Die ätherischen Öle werden im Mandelöl gelöst. Vor dem Schlafengehen werden Hände und Brust
mit der Mischung eingerieben.
Aroma therapy
In aromatherapy, essential orange oil is applied with general anxiety and nervousness, as well as sleep disorders
and neuro vegetative dystonia as a vapor, as additive to massage oils or oil bath due to its sedative (calming)
effect. The scent of the essential orange oil spreads a feeling of space and leads to deep relaxation.[4,5]
Oil mixture for insomnia:
5 dr. orange oil
3 dr. Roman chamomile oil
3 dr. lavender oil
2 dr. vetiver oil
50 mL of almond oil
The essential oils are dissolved in almond oil. At bedtime, hands and chest are rubbed with the mixture.
Verwendung in der Küche
Das ätherische Orangenöl wird in der Küche zur Aromatisierung von Süßwaren, alkoholischen und
nichtalkoholischen Getränken und Backwaren eingesetzt. Hauptsächlich wird aber der Saft der
Orange bzw. das Fruchtfleisch selbst verwendet.[2]

baked goods. Mainly, however, the juice of the orange and the flesh itself are used.[2]

Anwendung in der Kosmetik
Das ätherische Orangenöl wird in der Parfümerie sehr häufig eingesetzt. Es liefert Duftkomponenten
zu Citrus-, Chypre- und Fougèredüften. Es ist auch Bestandteil des Kölnischwasser und wird in vielen
Haarpflegemittel eingesetzt. Beliebt sind Kombinationen mit Benzoe, Gewürznelke, Jasmin, Lavendel,
Muskat, Muskatellersalbei, Myrrhe, Neroli, Patchouli, Rose, Tonka, Vanille, Vetiver, Weihrauch und
Zimt.[3]
Use in cosmetic
Essential orange oil is a commonly compound in perfume composition. It brings odour elements for citrus-,
chypre- and fougère compositions. It is a compound of Eau de cologne and is used in many hair care products.
Popular are combinations with benzoin, cloves, jasmine, lavender, nutmeg, clary sage, myrrh, neroli, patchouli,
rose, tonka bean, vanilla, vetiver, olibanum (incense) and cinnamon.[3]
Anwendungs- und Warnhinweise, Nebenwirkungen
Einige der Inhaltstoffe von ätherischem Orangenöl sind als gesundheitlich bedenklich einzustufen.
Furocuomarin-Derivate aus der Schale (z. B. Bergapten) zeigen photosensibilisierende und
phototoxische Eigenschaften. Unter Einfluss von UV-Licht (auch Sonnenlicht) kann es zu
Dermatitiden kommen. Auch konnte in Tierversuchen ein cokarzinogenes Potential nachgewiesen
werden. Ätherisches Orangenöl enthält potentiell allergen wirksame Bestandteile wie Limonen und

Application and warning notes, side effects
Some of the compounds of essential orange oil are categorized as harmful to health. Furocuomarine derivatives
from the peel (bergaptene) show photo sensitization and photo toxic effects. Under the influence of UV light (sun
light) sensitive persons might get dermatitis. In animal studies such compounds showed a co-carcinogenic
potential. Essential orange oil contains potential allergic compounds like limonene and citral. Also note the
reference in the material safety data sheet and the product specification.[2,4]

Where the bergapten (5-methoxypsoralen) content of all
relevant oils present in a compound has been determined, it
is recommended that for applications on areas of skin
exposed to sunshine, excluding bath preparations, soaps and
other products which are washed off the skin, the total level
of bergapten in the consumer products should not exceed
0.0015% (15 ppm). This is equivalent to 0.0075% (75 ppm) in
a fragrance compound used at 20% in the consumer product.
Where the level of bergapten has not been determined by
appropriate methods, the limits specified in the guidelines
