Legend 1
Legend 1 5 The Legend of the Thistle Die Legende der Distel During the 9th century Vikings made surprise raids on churches, monasteries and farming villages close to the coast of Scotland. For over 500 years Scottish kings did not rule all of Scotland. The far north of Scottish mainland, the Orkney and the Shetland Isles and the Hebrides (islands of Scotland’s west coast) were ruled by the Viking earls and warriors, and by the kings of Norway who were their overlords. But this has changed when Alexander III. reigned Scotland and the Battle of Largs took place in 1263. According to the legend he and his men got help from the prickly purple thistle which became the Guardian Thistle and was later adopted as the symbol of Scotland. Alexander III. became king as he was a 7-year-old boy. Once again, England saw a chance to meddle in Scottish politics. Henry III., king of England, arranged a marriage between his daughter and Alexander III. But as young as he was, Alexander III. said: “I will always refuse to do homage to Henry III. ...” “... I will keep Scotland independent...” “... and I will get back our land from the Vikings!” He kept his promise to keep Scotland independent. Now he wanted to order back the Scottish islands. Haakon, king of Norway, was powerful. The Norse king maintained all of the Inner Hebrides and the Outer Hebrides as the outpost of his empire. Alexander wanted to solve that problem. As he was known as a peaceful king it wasn’t a surprise as he said: “This is an intolerant state of affairs!...” “... I have to settle that problem but by diplomacy.” The two powerful kings met. “Haakon, king of Norway, you have to give up all the Scottish islands!” (Haakon answered:) “They are mine. I will never do that!!!” “Prepare 40 Dragon longboats!!!” “... We will settle the Hebridian question by attacking the Scottish mainland!” “As you wish sir.” In summer 1263 Haakon and his men set sail with the largest fleet that had ever left Norway. At the same time Scottish nobles tried to convince Alexander to assault the Vikings before they hit the Scottish mainland. But Alexander refused. “No, we won’t attack. We are awaiting them here!...” Wir werden hier auf sie warten!“... promise – Scottish islands – empire – surprise – diplomacy – kings Versprechen – schottische Inseln – Königreich – Überraschung – Diplomatie – Könige dragon longboats – question – summer – fleet – nobles Drachen-Langboote – Frage – Sommer – Flotte – Adelige 7 “We will get the enemy in unfavourable conditions for him on our own ground...” “... We will tackle him where we want him to be!...” “...Never go out to meet your enemy on his ground!!!...” “We will man up the castles along the western coast with soldiers!” Fate was also on the Scot’s side. Gales and fierce storms forced some of the ships onto the beach at Largs in Ayrshire, and a Norwegian force was landed. The Scots knew they would come but they didn’t expect them at that night. They were sleeping. The leader of the Vikings let his men remove their footwear to be quieter and get closer to the sleeping Scotsmen. Unfortunately they didn’t know their surrounding. One of king Haakon’s men stood on a prickly plant and yelled in pain, awakening and alerting the Scottish warriors of the advancing Vikings. The Scots won that day and also won the Battle of Largs. They drove the Vikings from Scotland. Haakon died returning to Norway and a following treaty returned the Hebrides to Scottish rule. Alexander III. kept his promise and drove the Vikings from the Hebrides but he also knew, that without the warning caused by the prickly purple thistle the victory would have cost more blood of his men. From that moment the prickly purple thistle became the Guardian Thistle and was later adopted as the symbol of Scotland firstly found on a coin. The End! Ende!
