Language Tips: Address people you know
Before you go, search the internet with tu (family/ friends) and
for audio pronunciation files to use vous for those you don’t
become familiar with some basics. know. Words have genders:
la feminine, le masculine.
Some letters are silent, such
as “h.” Some words have
accents that alter the sound:
www.maritimetravel.ca
“è” sounds like “e” in pet, “é”
12/15
See overleaf/pg2... sounds like “ay” in day.
Address people tú (family/
friends), usted for others.
Words have genders: la
feminine, le masculine.
Articulate each letter; except
an “h” is silent, in pollo the “ll”
is pronounced “y” as poyo
(chicken). In por favor
(please), practice rolling
the “rrrr.”
Most words are pronounced
exactly like they are spelled.
The “h” is always silent. The
stress is usually on the second last syllable. All nouns
have a gender: masculine
words usually end in “o” and
feminine in “a.” There is more
than one meaning to “you” formal, informal and plural.
A "d" at the end of word
sounds like a hard "t" and the
“v” is pronounced as an “f.”
The “w” is pronounced as “v,”
so “what” is pronounced as
“vas.” An “h” is silent. The “z”
is an English “ts” sound, not
“zee” or “zed.” The “th” is a “t.”
All nouns are capitalized, i.e.
Tag (afternoon).
