Esther Kempf
Esther Kempf ist eine präzise Erforscherin des
Alltäglichen und scheinbar Nebensächlichen. Die
Zürcher Künstlerin pflegt einen geradezu ironischliebevollen Umgang mit gewöhnlichen Gegenständen
wie Möbelstücken oder Büchern, aber auch Milchtüten, Klebestreifen, Streichhölzer oder Zimmerpalmen dienen ihr als Material für ihre Installationen, Objekte und Fotografien. Diese erlangen
durch akkurates Arrangieren eine neue, überraschende Identität. Das Ausloten physikalischer
Vorgänge und die Suche nach der Schnittstelle
zwischen Illusion und Wirklichkeit sind Ausgangspunkte für ihre mehrschichtigen Installationen.
Viele dieser Arbeiten erschliessen sich erst durch
die Begehung des Ausstellungsraumes. So formieren
sich im Werk Nichtisch (2005) beispielsweise ein
Lineal, eine Papierrolle, ein Stift und herunterhängende Tapetenfetzen in einer Raumecke durch
die Veränderung des Betrachterstandpunktes unvermittelt zu einem Tisch, der in den Raum zu ragen
scheint. Der Gegenstand ist klar erkennbar und
ist dennoch ein reines Fantasiegebilde. Anders
als das klassische trompe l’œil, in dem Künstler
die Bildherstellung zugunsten einer möglichst
perfekten Illusion verbergen, betont Esther Kempf
durch Materialwahl und Inszenierung geradezu die
Mechanismen der Illusionswerdung.
Für die CARAVAN-Ausstellung hat Esther Kempf eine
Reihe neuer Arbeiten geschaffen. Ihr Interesse an
einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Raum sowie die

Lust am Spiel mit der Schwerkraft zeigen sich
auch im Aargauer Kunsthaus. In eine neue Richtung
bewegt sich die Künstlerin mit den erstmals
präsentierten Text- und Videoarbeiten, in denen
sie der Beziehung zwischen Wort und (Schrift-)
Bild nachgeht. Als Ausgangsmaterial dienen ihr
literarische Werke sowie Filmklassiker. Fragen
nach dem Inhalt eines Romans oder Films, wie auch
nach der Bedeutung isolierter Worte und ganzer
Satzkonstruktionen liegen diesen Arbeiten zugrunde.
Esther Kempf zerlegt einzelne Filme in kurze
Bildsequenzen und montiert diese neu zu ein- bis
zweiminütigen Videoarbeiten. Dabei werden nicht
nur die dargestellten Inhalte und Ausdrucksformen
aufgebrochen. Vielmehr erschafft die Künstlerin
eine neue Erzählung auf der Metaebene. So werden
die Protagonisten aus The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
mittels zusammengesetzter Fragmente zu Erzählern
des Films, in dem sie selbst mitspielen. Auch
bei den Textarbeiten erschafft die Künstlerin
durch Überlagerung, Herauslösen und Zusammensetzen
einzelner Satzfragmente oder Buchseiten neue
Bedeutungsebenen. Die im Aargauer Kunsthaus präsentierten Installationen, Video- und Textarbeiten von Esther Kempf teilen die Auflösung
vormaliger Funktionen zugunsten der Entstehung
neuer Zusammenhänge.

Esther Kempf (*1980) hat von 2001 bis 2005
Bildende Kunst an der Gerrit Rietveld Academie
in Amsterdam studiert. Sie lebt und arbeitet
in Zürich.

Esther Kempf
A sharp observer of the everyday and the
seemingly obsolete, Zurich artist Esther Kempf
cultivates an ironic and playful take on ordinary
objects such as pieces of furniture or books.
She may also use milk cartons, adhesive tape,
matches or indoor palm trees as materials for her
installations. By meticulously arranging these,
the objects acquire a new and surprising identity.
As the point of departure for her multilayered
installation pieces, Esther Kempf explores
physical processes and tries to find the point
of intersection between illusion and reality.
Many of these pieces reveal themselves to the
viewer only as one moves through the exhibition
space. Her work Nichtisch (2005), for instance,
consists of a ruler, a paper roll, a pen and
scraps of wallpaper hanging down in a corner of
the gallery, which with a shift in the viewer’s
standpoint suddenly add up to a table that seems
to protrude into the space. The object is
clearly identifiable, yet it is purely a figment
of the imagination. As opposed to classic trompe
l’œil, where the creative process giving rise
to the image is concealed in order to create the
most perfect illusion possible, Esther Kempf,
through her choice of materials and their
arrangement, actually emphasises the way in which
the illusion is created.
For her CARAVAN exhibition Esther Kempf has
created a series of new works. Her interest in
working with space and her delight in playing

with gravity are evident at the Aargauer Kunsthaus as well. The artist moves into a new
direction with text and video pieces that, presented here for the first time, examine the
relationship between words and images (including
the image of words). Works of literature as well
as classic films serve as their source material,
as they start out asking questions about the
meaning of a novel or movie, or of isolated words
and entire sentence structures. Esther Kempf
cuts up individual movies into short sequences
and reassembles them into new, 1-2 minute-long
video pieces. In the process, the content represented as well as the manner of representation
is deconstructed, and the result is actually a
new narrative on a meta-level. Thus, the protagonists of The Grapes of Wrath (1940) become
narrators of the film in which they are actors.
By superimposing, isolating and piecing together
individual fragments of sentences or book pages
the artist creates new levels of meaning. What the
installation, video and text pieces by Esther
Kempf presented at the Aargauer Kunsthaus have in
common is the break up of previous functions
in favour of creating new coherences.

Esther Kempf (b. 1980) studied visual arts at
