Vienna‘s vibrant electronic hip hop scene has
had it‘s share of profile acts that not only earned
large acclaim by international audiences and
critics, but also came to influence the genre as
a whole. With „Fremdscham in Reality“, Minor
Sick, an artist previously known to a privileged
few, enters the scene in style – with a whispered
„Fuck you all“.
Born in Vienna, Christoph Prager (alias Minor
Sick) has roamed the country as a DJ and as
bassist of the popular Austrian rap/reggae band
„B Seiten Sound“ for much of the past decade.
His influences range from rap, funk and soul to
Hard Bop, Roots Reggae and the recent surge
of the vast unnamed genre of instrumental
hip hop of the likes of Flying Lotus or Hudson
Mohawke. His first solo piece titled „Harte
Liebe in der Realität EP“ („Hard Love in Reality
EP“) of 2009 marked the first appearance of his
new sound and style which very much counters
many of the attempts on a more popular appeal
in his early career. His introspective first album
„Fremdscham in Reality“ isn‘t meant to be light.
And for the most part it isn‘t meant solely to
entertain.
„Fremdscham“ is the german word for feeling
embarassed by the public embarassement of
others. Minor Sick escapes this painful feeling
of empathy by regressing to a state of musical
childdom with all it‘s simple beauty, innocence
and purity. But in the process he lets this theme
collide with mature sophistication, with violence,
with destruction and the chaos of thought.
Nothing is simple in Minor Sick‘s music, nothing
is absolute. There is always a counterpart to
melody, always the contrast of subtle beauty and
blaring terror, lucid dream and harsh reality.
Christoph Prager (alias Minor Sick) ist ein
Produzent, DJ und Bassist aus Wien. Seine
musikalischen Wurzeln liegen im Hip Hop und
Rap, jene Musikrichtung, die seine frühe Zeit
als DJ im vergangenen Jahrzehnt prägte. Dazu
gesellten sich bald Funk, Soul und vor allem Jazz
und Reggae. Letztere führten zur Anschaffung
eines Kontrabasses und zur Gründung der Rap/
Reggae-Formation B Seiten Sound, gemeinsam
mit MC p.tah, der zuvor bereits mit seiner in
Österreich sehr populären Rap-Gruppe Hörspielcrew (HSC) in Erscheinung getreten war.
Mit B Seiten Sound produzierte Minor Sick das
Album „Du kannst nicht Tanzen“ (Hoanzl, 2008),
dessen Songs zum Großteil aus seiner Feder
stammen. Die Gruppe erarbeitete sich rasch
einen hervorragenden Ruf als Live-Band. Im Jahr
2009 war er als Live-DJ von MC Kamp tätig,
dem wohl erfolgreichsten heimischen Rapper
der vergangenen Jahre.
Parallel zu B Seiten Sound arbeitete Minor Sick
an seinem Solo-Projekt als Produzent. Seine
erste Demo-EP „Harte Liebe in der Realität“ publizierte er 2009 in Eigenregie. Das positive Echo
bewegte ihn zur Konzeption seines nun erscheinenden ersten Albums „Fremdscham in Reality“,
welches als EP am aufstrebenden, jungen Label
Duzz Down San auf Vinyl, sowie in voller Länge
im Netz veröffentlicht wird.
Auf seinem neuen Album präsentiert sich Minor
Sicks Musik gereift. Er hat seinen markanten
Stil seiner ersten EP zu einem dichten, außergewöhnlichen Klangerlebnis destilliert, das ihn in
der instrumentalen Hip Hop-Szene in Österreich
einzigartig macht. So darf bei Minor Sick das Einfache nicht ohne dem Schwierigen sein. Schön
oder hässlich sind nutzlose Kategorien, außer
wenn es darum geht, das Schöne mit großer Verve abzuwürgen, zu verstümmeln, zu zerstören.
Was übrig bleibt, ist die unwillkürliche Verehrung
von Realität und Traum zugleich, die Faszination
am Irrsinn. Mit „Fremdscham in Reality“ hätten
Psychoanalytiker ihre helle Freude.
