D-04-19-WVP cups
Water vapour permeability cups
The vapometer is used for determining the water vapour
permeability of sheet materials such as specialty paper
grades, polyethylene, building material, leather, weather
proof clothing, vinyl, foil and laminates. This property is
essential in determining a materials moisture proofness
or the ability to protect contents from the transmission of
water vapour.
The water vapour permeability cups are available in a
wide range of sizes for mechanical and wax sealing. They
can be used at any temperature or relative humidity to
ensure product performance across different conditions.
Depending on the end use, water or a dessicant is placed
in the base of the container.
The specimen is then quickly sealed and placed in a test
chamber that controls the atmosphere.
Vapour loss or gain is measured by recording the weight
of the sample at different intervals over a period of time.
Vapometer mechanical seal
The vapometer cup consists of a light aluminium cup
and a langed rim with a neoprene gasket that holds the
specimen in place. This design was speciically used to
eliminate edge leakage. The specimen is securely sealed
between the lower and upper lange with six knurled
head screws.
There are some applications where the mechanical seal
does not provide an adequate seal. In these applications
a wax seal must be employed.
Water vapour permeability test dishes
In applications where the material does not respond to
the vapometer’s mechanical seal, a wax seal can be used.
Test dishes utilize a cast wax seal to hold the sample in
place. The wax seal is created with a casting template.

Sample preparation
Accurate samples for the vapometer can be quickly prepared with a mallet die known as the vapometer sample
cutting die. It is made of forged and tempered steel and is
available in a variety of sizes.
