Nuntius On-line - Wirral Grammar School for Boys
Nuntius On-line Spring 2012 Ecopolis As part of our focus on the environment for green schools and our new Comenius project the year 13 French group had to design a plan for an Eco town. Nathan Walker U61 LB YEAR 9 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION VISIT - HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL 2012 On the 27th January the whole of Year 9 travelled to the Floral Pavilion by coach to remember the atrocities which occurred in WW2. We were sitting eagerly awaiting a Jewish Holocaust survivor called Rudi Oppenheimer. Rudi Oppenheimer was born in 1931 in Berlin, 3 years after his brother Paul Oppenheimer was born. He lived in Berlin with his mother, father and brother for 6 years, until his father had a job transfer to Holland. Rudi, Paul and his mother lived in Britain for 6 months with his uncle, also called Rudi. It was in London that his sister, Eve, was born. Rudi and his family moved to Amsterdam a few years later and was eventually rounded up and sent to a concentration camp called Belsen. Before we were introduced to Rudi, the Mayoress of Wirral introduced this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day’s theme which was ‘Stand Up, Speak Out.’ The Mayoress lit candles in memory of those that were killed and also got boys from our school and pupils from other schools to say a sentence commemorating those that died and survived the holocaust. After a speech about Auschwitz presented by Prenton High School, Rudi Oppenheimer came on stage. Rudi began by talking about his childhood and his life before WW2 began. When the Nazis started persecuting the Jews, Rudi and his family had to escape, so left the country. This made the whole of Year 9 feel immensely sorry for Rudi as the Nazi regime had torn their lives apart, as it made them leave their home and a normal happy life. After we heard about the trouble the Oppenheimer family had been put in, and the sacrifices that they made. Rudi’s story became worse when he and his family arrived at a concentration camp called Belsen. They lived with many other Jews who had also been sent to the camp, so they were cramped, weak, sick and very hungry. Rudi described the terrible conditions and the things his family had to do to survive. He said that whilst he was working at the kitchens (at the age of twelve!) he had to take pieces of potato that floated to the bottom, which he then ate and shared with his family. The most upsetting thing that Rudi told us, that made me and everybody else in the Floral Pavilion feel sorry for him was that his mother and then father died in Belsen due to a disease. Rudi said that when he went to visit his mother and father a few mornings after they fell ill; there was somebody else in their bed. This made us feel very sorry for Rudi having lost his parents under harsh and sad circumstances. However, Rudi’s story turned out to end happily as now Rudi is touring many schools and enjoying his life. Eve, (Rudi’s sister) is also enjoying her life. May Hans, Rita and Paul Oppenheimer rest in peace! We have learnt how the Holocaust affected many different people and why we should strive to put an end to future Genocides. I would like to thank Ms. Razbully on behalf of Year 9 for organising this most enjoyable and educational trip. George Watson, 9OA Junior Bantams A team Played 19 Won 18 Lost 1 for 613 against 467 diff +546. B team Played 13 Won 13 Lost 0 for 563 against 60 diff +503. Another outstanding season, and one in which the B team have now gone two years unbeaten, a great achievement by all the players that have been involved over the past couple of seasons. The weather has meant a shortened winter term, with cancelations due to frozen pitches, however we are still in the Cheshire Cup awaiting either St Ambrose or Sandbach in the SemiFinal. COWBRIDGE A very successful trip to South Wales saw great wins over Stanwell School 24-5, and Cowbridge School 17-0, the first time we had won both games. The boys were a credit to the school and had a wonderful experience including a trip to the Millennium Stadium and Rodney Parade, where they watched the Newport Gwent Dragons play Munster. The boys got autographs of some famous Welsh internationals and appeared on television supporting the Dragons in their new rugby shirts and jester hats. To Mr Mckibbin`s pleasure the Triple Crown was paraded around the ground to rapturous applaud from the Welsh supporters and also all our lads, showing no signs of bitterness at the result from the week before at Twickenham. Once again the lads were very courteous both on and off the pitch, and only got their chance to have a go at Mr McKibbin when at the BAA in the Millennium Stadium, they used this opportunity to get all the Sheep jokes out at once. I would like to thank the players for their behaviour and also Mr McKibbin for organising all the events over the weekend. SEVENS KEQM`s Thurs. 24th February Another successful tournament saw us defeated in the Final against Lancaster grammar School 21-5. The players were excellent in the group stages scoring points, only conceding 14, followed by a good 24-5 win in the semi-final against Altrincham Grammar. Top Scorer: Charlie Norman 55 points (7 tries, 10 conversions) BRADFORD Wed. 7th March In a very prestigious tournament with all the top schools in the North competing we had another excellent performance. Group wins over Crossley Heath, Lymm , and Audenshaw meant we needed to beat Lancaster to qualify, after two defeats to them we would have to be at our best. A convincing 24-14 win laid the ghosts to rest, and in the Final game we beat RGS Newcastle 19-5 to lift the trophy. Top Scorer: Nathan Mckinney 53 points (7 tries, 9 conversions) I would like to thank all the players for their efforts throughout the season, and also like to thank the parents for their magnificent support both home and away and to those parents who help with refreshments on Saturday mornings. Mr Hughes has been an excellent help this year and his support has pushed both teams to play a much better standard and continue their rugby journey onwards and upwards. Finally I would like to wish all the players every success for next season, and for being a fantastic team to coach this season. Junior Bantams Coach Andy McKinney
