Journée de prévention contre la conduite avec facultés affaiblies chez les jeunes

Le 24 mai prochain sera une journée bien remplie pour les étudiants francophones du secondaire
à Welland! Plusieurs organismes dont le Bureau de santé publique du Niagara, le Centre de santé
communautaire Hamilton/Niagara (CSCHN) et Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving (OSAID)
travaillent de concert pour offrir des activités de sensibilisation sur les dangers de la conduite sous
l'effet de la drogue et l'alcool. La journée comprendra une présentation de Matt Evans, Directeur
exécutif de OSAID, à chaque école secondaire de Jean-Vanier et Confédération. Il y aura également
des ressources de Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) disponibles sur place. L'événement
s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet antidrogue C'est Mon Choix! du CSCHN qui a pour but
d'augmenter les connaissances des jeunes sur les dangers et de réduire la consommation et les
comportements à risque associés à l'usage de drogues illicites.
C'est en fait la première fois qu'une journée de prévention de ce genre est organisée pour les
jeunes francophones de la région! Plusieurs écoles anglophones ont eu l'occasion d'y participer au
courant des dernières années et c'est maintenant au tour des écoles francophones. Le besoin
d'adresser ce comportement dangereux est évident dans notre communauté. En effet, le sondage
OSDUHS du Centre de toxicomanie et de santé mentale réalisé en 2011 au Niagara a révélé
quelques statistiques alarmantes: 1 étudiant sur 4 a été passager d'une voiture où le conducteur
avait consommé de l'alcool et 10,8% des étudiants ayant un permis de conduire valide ont déjà
conduit dans l'heure suivant la consommation de cannabis.
Les médias sont tous invités à faire partie de la journée. L'événement se déroulera à l'école JeanVanier de 8h à 9h30 et à l'école Confédération de 11h à 13h.

First Impaired Driving Prevention Day For Francophone Youth

Welland, May 13, 2016
May 24th will be an eventful day for francophone high school students in Welland! Several
organizations including Niagara Region Public Health, the Centre de santé communautaire
Hamilton/Niagara (CSCHN) and Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving (OSAID) are working
together to offer awareness-raising activities on the dangers of driving under the influence of
drugs and alcohol at Jean-Vanier and Confédération. The day will include a presentation at each
school from OSAID's Executive Director, Matt Evans. Resources from Mothers Against Drunk
Driving (MADD) will also be available to students. The event is part of the C'est Mon Choix!
antidrug project offered by the CSCHN. The project aims to educate young people on the harmful
effects of illicit drug use as well as reduce drug consumption and risky behaviours.
It is actually the first time that this kind of prevention activity is organized for francophone youth
in the region! In recent years, many English schools had the chance to take part in it and French
schools will now have the opportunity to benefit from this prevention message. The need to
address this dangerous behaviour is evident in the community. In fact, the Centre for Addiction
and Mental Health's OSDUHS survey conducted in Niagara in 2011 revealed some alarming
statistics: 1 out of 4 students has been a passenger with a driver who had been drinking and 10.8%
of students with a valid driver's license had driven within an hour of using cannabis.
Media are invited to attend the event which will take place at Jean-Vanier from 8am to 9:30am
and at Confédération from 11am to 1pm.
