ORAL PRODUCTION ADMINISTRATION GUIDE
The Oral Production component of the Français 3202 Public Exam is administered by
teachers near the end of the school term in advance of the final examination period. Each
interview is recorded and graded according to the following guidelines.
Prior to the Interview :
1. Teachers are to prepare an oral production exercise schedule to include all students
in the Français 3202 course. See completed sample on page 4 and a blank sample
on page 5.
2. School administrators are asked to facilitate the teacher in providing a location for
the oral production exercise. This includes two rooms, one where the student can
prepare for the interview for 15 minutes prior and a second room where the actual
interviews are to be conducted by the teacher.
3. Teachers are to ensure the digital voice recorder provided by the Department of
Education and Early Childhood Development is functioning. Instruction manuals for
each recording device can be found on the Department website for Public Exam
Information at http://www.ed.gov.nl.ca/edu/k12/evaluation/exams.html.
Day of the Interview :
4. Teachers are provided with six sets of questions and six pictures with accompanying
quotes related to the themes: L’argent, Les conflits mondiaux, La contestation,
L’environnement, La pauvreté, and Les relations humaines.
1
5. Students choose randomly one picture with a quote 15 minutes prior to their oral
production exercise. This picture and accompanying questions provided by the
Department forms the basis of the oral production exercise.
6. During this preparation time, students are asked to:
a. find a title for their picture and prepare a justification for their choice;
b. prepare for a description of various elements shown in the image;
c. prepare for a discussion on the theme; and
d. prepare for a discussion of the quote or proverb which accompanies their
picture.
7. During this preparation time, students are permitted to use language aids such as
dictionaries or verb guides. However, students may not bring any language aids or
notes to the actual oral production exercise. Nothing is to be written on the sheet
provided by the Department with the picture and the quote.
During the interview:
8. All oral production exercise sessions are to be recorded using the digital voice
recorder provided by the Department.
9. Using the digital recorder, teachers must identify each student by their EXAM
NUMBER and the theme chosen by the student. Proceeding the oral production
exercise session, the teacher must record: "Français 3202 oral production exercise
of exam number_______. Theme is ____________________________. "
10. Teachers are permitted to address the student by his/her first name during the
interview session.
11. For each student, the oral production exercise is to be a minimum of fifteen minutes
in length.
12. Teachers must limit themselves to reading the questions provided although they are
permitted to rephrase or repeat questions if necessary.
13. All questions for the theme chosen by the student will be asked, unless a student has
already provided an adequate response while answering a previous question or if the
student has spoken extensively for 15 minutes and has answered a sufficient
number of questions to enable a fair assessment of spoken French. In such a case,
the teacher will conclude the interview by asking the last question of the exercise,
question 15.
2
After the interview:
14. Each oral production session is to be graded immediately upon completion.
15. Teachers are to use the scoring guide (Grille de notation de la production orale)
provided. See sample on page 6. Teachers may photocopy this form to use during the
oral production exercise and they should keep these for their records. (It is also
available on the Français 3202 public examination website:
http://www.ed.gov.nl.ca/edu/k12/evaluation/francais3202.html#ressources)
16. All interviews are to be reported using the Oral Production Monitoring Form.
17. For each interview, teachers must record on the Oral Production Monitoring Form, the
Folder (e.g., A) where the interviews are located, as well as the student’s public exam
number, theme and the track number as it appears on the recorder (e.g., 1, 2, 3,
etc.). There should be ample space in Folder A for all of the interviews. If not, please
continue with Folder B. See sample of a completed form on Page 7.
18. A score of zero must be indicated on the Oral Production Monitoring Form for
students who do not present themselves for their scheduled interview session.
19. Scores out of 25 are to be submitted to the Department on the Oral Production
Monitoring Form. Half marks are permitted.
