la fonctionnalité, la flexibilité et la modularité des objets. Afin de
débarrasser la technologie de sa froideur high-tech et la rendre
plus familière, elle compose pour Danese une suspension en
plaques de leds assemblées façon abat-jour, Court Circuit.
ESPACE. Matali Grasset poursuit sa collaboration avec la chaîne
Hi avec un premier hôtel parisien, Hi Matic, conçu comme un
écologis urbain. Un concept de chambres cabines, entre auberge
de jeunesse, gîte ou ryokan japonais. Bois naturel et aplats de

Danese (Double Side), a sofa that tunis into a bed for Campeggi
(Dynamic Life)... Matali Grasset is conslantly rethinking thefunctionality, flexibility and modularity ofhousehold objects. To warin
up the slark chill of high-tech and make it more familial she used
LED plates to fam bath the (amp and the shade in Court Circuit
for Danese.
SPACES. Crasset's collaboration with the Hi Hotels Group continues
with the Hi Matic, an urban eco-dwetting in the heart of Paris. Positioned somewhere between cabin.youth hoslel, country cottage and
Japanese ryokan, the informai space is struélured by natural wood

PROFIL. Le designer australien, 48 ans, a fini l'année 2010 avec un
projet qui lui tenait à cœur : dessiner un bateau. Il a ainsi revisité un
mythe de la firme nautique italienne Riva, TAquarama. Outre satisfaire les passe-temps de grands enfants, il lorgne aussi du côte du
monde des enfants, les vrais cette fois. Certes, il a dessine nombre
de projets qui faisaient peu ou prou penser à des jouets, comme
son fameux concept-cai oziC pour Ford, mais désormais papa
d'une fillette, Marc Newson dessine en connaissance de cause.
MOBILIER. Pour la collection Me Tao de l'éditeur transalpin
Magis, il conçoit Bunky, un lit pour enfant en plastique rotomoulé
que l'on peut jumeler à un autre, grâce a un élément intermédiaire,
afin de construire de véritables... lits superposés, c.s.

PROFILE. Marc Newson (age 48) ended 2010 with a project that he
had bern eagerly antiapating: a «interprétation of the legendary

Après avoir imaginé une Ice Cream Machine pour le chef anglais
Heston Blumenthal, il a présente, en mai dernier, à la Saatchi
Gallery de Londres, avec l'artMe-colori&e Sophie Smallhorn, un
projet intitulé Colourwave, présentant une série de plats utilisant des
combinaisons inhabituelles de matériaux et de couleurs inhérentes.
ÉDITIONS. À Milan, le designer a dévoilé une pièce de son projet
Blow by Blow, série d'objets en verre aux formes expérimentales.
Pour Pigr, il a dessiné Pipe, un verre en forme de... pipe. Les entreprises françaises ne sont pas en resT:e. PourTolix, il conçoit un trio
de choc: un portemanteau, Family Tree, et un porte-parapluies,

full After dreaming up an Ice Cream Machine/or the English chef

London, a collaborative projeft with color artis} Sophie Smallhorn
called Colourwave, "tower compositions" of plates using unusual
combinations ofmaterials with inhérent color.
RELEASES. ln Milan, Bergne showed a new addition to hts Blow by
Blow series of expérimentalforms in glass. For Pigr he designed Pipe,
a glass intheshape of(logically enough) a calabash pipe. Mis work has
alsa won hlm contrats with French manufaâwers, such as Tolix, for
which he designed a cool rack, Family Tree, an umbrella Stand and a

PROJETS. Plancher actuellement sur l'élaboration de la torche
olympique des J.O. de Londres 2012, probablement l'un des
objets les plus vus au monde, n'empêche pas le tandem britannique Edward Barber et Jay Osgerby, tous deux âgés de 42 ans,
de vaquer à d'autres occupations.
ACTUALITÉ. Pour l'éditeur de luminaires Flos, ils dévoilent
l'applique Beaker, à la silhouette classique et au corps en céramique opaque. Ils signent en outre leur entree chez le fabricant
helvète Vitra avec la table Map et la chaise Tip Ton, à la « position d'assise dynamique ». Les deux designers ont en fait étudié
de près la position récurrente de nombre de gens qui, une fois
assis devant une table, se penchent en équilibre sur les deux pieds
avants de leur siège, position, paraît-il, très confortable pour la

PROJECTS. One oftheir current commissions will, for a time, be
the maél widely seen single objecl in the world: the tarai of the 2012
Olympic Games in London. At the same time, the British designers
Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby (bath age 42) have plenty of other
projets to attend to.
WHAT'S NEW. For the lamp maker Flos, they have unveiled the
Beaker, an opaque ceramic wall light with dassical Unes. And they
have marked iheirdébut with Vitra inSwitzerland with the Map table
and a "dynamic seatingposition" chair catted Tip Ton. The ideafor the
lafter arose fram the observation that mary people, when sitring at a

1999 et éditée par Cappelini en 2000, lui ouvre une voie royale.
Lapalma, Offeccl ou Wâslberg font maintenant appel à lui pour
concevoir meubles el luminaires.
NOUVEAUTÉS. Aimant aller à l'essence même des choses, il étudie
l'univers, l'hisloire de l'entreprise. Chez Kriflalia, les premiers
meubles, Degree ct Side Table, viennent dc sortir, mais il les développe depuis trois ans. Sortis également cette année, la chaise

PARCOURS. Ce designer britannique de 42 ans n'a rien d'un débutant. Cofondateur de la mythique société Inflate, designer de
produits pour AJblund, Magis, Gervasoni, Thonet, SCP ou Bute,
Michael Sodeau développe un design aux lignes sobres et contemporaines typiquement british, mais également des architectures
intérieures pour des restaurants ou des hôtels (plus de 6 à ce jour).
Aux côtés de Tom Dixon, Jasper Morrison, Barber Osgerby ou
Matthew Hilton, il incarne la fine fleur du design anglais.
AcTUALiTÉ.Après avoir Iancéen2oo9 une marque d'accessoires
de bureau ultra-esthétiques pour la société japonaise Suikosha,
Michael Sodeau s'attaque cette année à la pierre avec la société
portugaise Sienave. Baptisée +Stone, la nouvelle joint-venture
propose des meubles et des objets au look austère en Sienito CVL
Monchique, une pierre portugaise grise extraite en Algarve. Le
designer signe également des tabourets Noughts and Crosses et

British touch. One of the elite in UK design along with Tom Dixon,

des frontières italiennes, a bascule cette année dans la cour des
grands. Pas un salon sans qu'il ne présente de nouvelles choses,
jusqu'à Milan où tout le monde ne parlait que de lui et de ses projets.
ACTUALITÉ. Chez Established & Sons, il s'esl: à nouveau frotté à
la lumière avec sa Dame, qui trônait, au son des Smiths, au milieu
des miroirs du Teatro Versace, dévoilant un joli cannage une fois
allumée. Chez Casamania, sa chaise Stereo mêlait adroitement
bois etpolypropylène. Chez Gallotti & Radiée, on a adoré ses petites tables en éventail baptisées Tqfjy, de même que les formes et
les finitions ultra-féminines de ses fauteuils en laine Dressed pour
Tacchini. Enfin chez Venini, il présentait Argo, et chez Foscarini,
Plass, deux lampes en forme de retour à ses racines vénitiennes

Venetian p/easures
PROFILE. Yeslerdqy's promisingyoung designer, already much appretiated in his native Italy and beyond, fias definitely arrived in the
big leagues. New pieces appear at every trade/air. In Milan, every
conversation turned to Luca Nichetto and his projets.
WHAT'S NEW. For Eslablished ac Sons ke turned his attention once
again to lighting with Dame, the pendant lamp that look center
étage among the mirrors of the Teatro Versace, to the sounds of the
Smiths, revealing lovely canework when lit. Alsa sem at the Salone, his
Stereo chair for Casamania adroi fly mixes wood andpofypropylene.
His Taffy tables for Gallotti 8ç Radiée won him manyfans, as did
the feminine forms andjinishings of his wool-upholûered Dressed
armchairsfor Tacchini. Two ofNichetto's lamps — Argo/or Venini
and Plass for Foscarini — harken back to his Venetian roots, even

RELEASES. For Royal Ahrend, she has created the Ahrend 380 line,
consiïting afa chair and nva tabks infiberglass-reinforced polyamide.
She has alsa landed at Magis, contributing to the Me lbo children's
range with shelves called My Storage. Hans commenta, "I wanted to

Palomba Serafîni Associati, ce couple de designers italiens
occupe une place de choix dans la catégorie « design d'auteur
sobre et intemporel » et multiplie les collaborations.
RÉFÉRENCES. Pour Foscaiini, ils viennent de signer Birdie, une
lampe évoquant un perchoir, et pour Driade, Cape West, une
ligne de fauteuils d'extérieur en plastique tressé, ainsi que la série
Lecon. Adeptes d'un design élégant et lisse, Ludovica et Roberto
Palomba excellent dans les sTrudures modulables, comme cette
série de cuisine Playground pour Elmar. Un sens de l'assemblage
qui n'exclut pas celui du détail, à l'œuvre dans le dessin de Clip,
