Studenten aus Paris und
London im Dezember 2013
vier Tage lang gemeinsam an
einem historischen Thema. Die
Kreativität stand bei dieser
Begegnung im Mittelpunkt!

ist ein Netzwerk aus
Organisationen, Gruppen und
Individuen, die sich mit neuen
Ansätzen im Bereich
partizipatorischer Kunst und
Erinnerung an Geschichte des
20. Jahrhunderts beschäftigen:

Timecase-History in Action
This suitcase is the central character
of this project. It travelled to Paris
from London, empty. It came back
to London two days later full of
artwork crafted by students in Paris.
Under the channel tunnel, it crossed
paths with its sister suitase which did
the trip from London to Paris
carrying artwork made by London
students.
In 'Memorials in Progress'
two groups of young people from
London and Paris work together to
create European freedom memorials
that respond to the first world war
and contemporary Europe through
dialogue exchange and process.
Both teams at the Goethe-Institut
Paris and atThe CASS, London
Metropolitan University learn to
work artistically on an historical
theme, develop pedagogical
strategies to support young people in
a multilingual context and create a
platform for true participative
practice from an artistic and
pedagogic perspective.
Dans le cadre des commémorations du centenaire 1914-1918,
le Goethe-Institut Paris organise un atelier d'art auquel
participent sept lycéens français. L'expérience comporte une
courte intervention artistique dans un espace public.
Zwei Gruppen von Jugendlichen arbeiten parallel an einem
Memorial. In ihrer kreativen Arbeit lassen sie sich von Ideen
und Materialvorschlägen der jeweils anderen Gruppe
beeinflussen. Zentrale Rolle spielt dabei ein Koffer. Das
Projekt wird von Künstlern und Pädagogen begleitet.
Research in action. Was ist ein Memorial? A place? An
object? Un espace? A concept? A feeling? Une valise?
Teilnehmer als Partner
The 4 day programme is designed
around experimental learning and
problem solving situations.
Participants and facilitators are
required to be adaptive and
creative, to build on prior
knowledge to grasp new concepts
and to make use of kinaesthetic,
linguistic and interpersonal skills.
We keep within our roles and we
are equal listeners and innovators.
Group warm-up activities
include: negotiating and agreeing,
touching and trusting, respecting
opinions and listening,
encouraging creativity and
humour.

The days are punctuated by short
and focussed 'active leaning
moments'. We make space to
reassemble our thoughts, to build
our confidence, to accept setbacks
and to open up our minds.

Through a hands-on brainstorming session, we work towards
structuring ideas, we are being challenged about assumptions,
we look at language use and vocabulary choice, we questions
our own school-based knowledge and our cultural identity.
We create our own memory...
Gemeinsam beschäftigen wir uns mit einem historischen
Thema - dem Ersten Weltkrieg - und fragen uns, welche
Bedeutung dieses Ereignis für uns heute hat. Für uns als
Franzosen, Deutsche, Engländer, Schweden, Österreicher,
Italiener... als Europäer!
When we make, when we talk, when we share,
when we question, when we manipulate;
connections in our brains come easily.

Discovering and adapting art materials

Performing our art work in public. Finally!

Communication and language choice is a key feature of
Memorials in Progress. Conducted in three languages,
our project is rich in concepts, cultural exchange and
humour. Multilingualism opens the door to many
colourful views of the world.
Der interkulturelle Dialog ist zentral für Memorials in
Progress: Unsere Ideen tauschen wir auf English,
Französisch und Deutsch aus, direkt oder mit der
anderen Gruppe über Skype.
The London team interprets instructions from the
Paris team.
Task-based learning leads to students applying their
own knowledge to solving a task. It also allows for
making 'mistakes' in a safe environment through
trial and error.

The London team builds their memorial and exhibit it on Whitechapel High Street.
Recognition and exposure to the public view gives us responsibility.
