I laughed and taking out a handkerchief, quickly wiped my face. ‘I’m very sorry, sir. The
strains of a hard day.’
‘Yes, it’s been hard work.’
Someone addressed his lordship and he turned away to reply. I was about to continue
further around the room when I caught sight of Miss Kenton through the open doorway,
signalling to me. I began to make my way towards the doors, but before I could reach them,
M. Dupont touched my arm.
‘Butler,’ he said, ‘I wonder if you would find me some fresh bandages. My feet are
unbearable again.’
‘Yes, sir.’
As I proceeded towards the doors, I realized M. Dupont was following me. I turned and
said: ‘I will come and find you, sir, just as soon as I have what is required.’
‘Please hurry, butler. I am in some pain.’
‘Yes, sir. I’m very sorry, sir.’
Miss Kenton was still standing out in the hall where I had first spotted her. As I emerged,
she walked silently towards the staircase, a curious lack of urgency in her manner. Then she
turned and said: ‘Mr Stevens, I’m very sorry. Your father passed away about four minutes
ago.’
‘I see.’
She looked at her hands, then up at my face. ‘Mr Stevens, I’m very sorry’, she said. Then
she added: ‘I wish there was something I could say.’
‘There’s no need, Miss Kenton.’
‘Dr Meredith has not yet arrived.’ Then for a moment she bowed her head and a sob
escaped her. But almost immediately, she resumed her composure and asked in a steady
voice: ‘Will you come up and see him?’
‘I’m very busy just now, Miss Kenton. In a little while perhaps.’
‘In that case, Mr Stevens, will you permit me to close his eyes?’
‘I would be most grateful if you would, Miss Kenton.’
She began to climb the staircase, but I stopped her, saying: ‘Miss Kenton, please don’t
think me unduly improper in not ascending to see my father in his deceased condition just at
this moment. You see, I know my father would have wished me to carry on just now.’
‘Of course, Mr Stevens.’
‘To do otherwise, I feel, would be to let him down.’

Je ris, sortis un mouchoir et me frottai le visage d’un geste rapide. « Sincèrement navré, Monsieur. La journée a
été dure, je suis éprouvé.
– Oui, du gros travail. »
Quelqu’un interpella le Comte qui se retourna pour répondre. Je m’apprêtais à reprendre le service autour de la
pièce lorsque j’aperçus Miss Keaton à travers l’ouverture de la porte qui me faisait signe. Je me dirigeai vers les
portes mais avant que je ne puisse les atteindre, Monsieur Dupont me toucha le bras.
« Majordome, dit-il, pourriez-vous me trouver des compresses fraîches ? Mes pieds me font de nouveau
terriblement souffrir.
– Oui Monsieur. »
Alors que je me dirigeais de nouveau vers les portes, je me rendis compte que Monsieur Dupont me suivait. Je
me retournai et dis : « Je vais venir vous les apporter, Monsieur, dès que je les aurai trouvées.
– S’il vous plaît, majordome, dépêchez-vous, j’ai très mal.
– Oui, Monsieur, excusez-moi. »
Miss Keaton se tenait toujours dans le hall là où je l’avais aperçue la première fois. Lorsque j’apparus, elle se
dirigea silencieusement vers les marches de manière étrangement calme. Puis elle se retourna et dit : « Monsieur
Stevens, je suis désolée. Votre père est mort il y a quatre minutes environ.
– Entendu. »
Elle regarda ses mains, puis mon visage. « Monsieur Stevens, je suis sincèrement désolée » dit-elle. Puis elle
ajouta : « Si seulement il y avait quelque chose que je puisse dire.
– Pas besoin, Miss Keaton.
– Le Docteur Meredith n’est pas encore arrivé. » Pendant un moment, elle baissa la tête et un sanglot lui
échappa. Mais aussitôt elle reprit contenance et demanda d’une voix ferme : « Voulez-vous monter le voir ?
– Là, je suis trop occupé, Miss Keaton. Peut-être d’ici quelques instants.
– Dans ce cas, me laisseriez-vous lui fermer les yeux ?
– J’en serais très reconnaissant, Miss Keaton. »
Elle monta les escaliers mais je l’arrêtai et lui dis : « Miss Keaton, s’il vous plaît, ne croyez pas que de ne pas
monter voir mon père décédé est excessivement déplacé dans les circonstances présentes. Voyez-vous, je
connais mon père, je sais qu’il aurait voulu que je continue mon service.

Le texte de Kazuo Ishiguro proposé cette année se basait sur un contexte très spécifique (un
majordome, qui apprend le décès de son père lors de son service). Les interlocuteurs variés
et le formalisme du langage n'ont pas toujours été bien appréhendés par les étudiants. Le
vouvoiement attendu n'a pas toujours été respecté. En revanche, le vocabulaire ne posait
pas de problème particulier. Beaucoup d’étudiants ont rencontré des difficultés pour
respecter la concordance des temps des verbes, et ne maîtrisent pas en particulier la
conjugaison au passé simple (exemple : entra au lieu d’entrai). Les descriptions très
détaillées des mouvements des personnages qu'on ne trouverait pas en français et des
difficultés de vocabulaires, notamment les phrasal verbs dont le sens est très difficile à
déduire si on ne les connaît pas (ex: pass away) Certains tendent à enrichir la traduction par
rapport à l’original; ceci est pénalisé. Enfin, il est à noter que de nombreux points fautes sont
attribués suite à des erreurs orthographiques et des omissions de parties entières du texte
(fait plus rare que lors de sessions précédentes).
Cet examen a été corrigé avec des points fautes (-1 pour une légère faute de sens,
orthographe, grammaire…, -2 pour un contre-sens, non-concordance verbale, non-respect
du tutoiement / vouvoiement, -4 pour un mot essentiel non traduit, -8 pour un passage non
traduit).
0 point fautes = 20/20, 70 points fautes = 10/20, 140 points fautes = 0/20. Une proportion
non négligeable d'étudiants (environ 10%) ont eu plus de 140 points fautes et ont donc
également 0/20.
THEME
En général, un bon effort pour tout traduire. Les étudiants qui connaissent le vocabulaire du
commerce ont eu un meilleur résultat. Ceux qui ont appris le vocabulaire hors contexte ont
souvent créé des phrases sans sens. Il ne faut pas essayer d’ « améliorer » les phrases ou
d’utiliser un langage trop compliqué. En effet, il vaut mieux parfois « sous-traduire » une
phrase difficile (proposer une traduction simplifiée) que de s’embrouiller avec des tournures
qu’on ne maîtrise pas.

prépositions et une syntaxe appropriées. Les prépositions sont souvent traduites
directement du français :

Les temps doivent être respectés. Les candidats mettent trop souvent le present perfect
quand le past simple est demandé : La Bourse de Francfort a ouvert mardi – The Frankfurt
stock market opened on Tuesday (NOT has opened).
QCM
Cette partie de l’examen pénalise l’étudiant avec des points négatifs. 40 questions à choix
multiple.
Bonne réponse : 3 points, pas de réponse : 0 points, réponse fausse : -1 point. Il vaut mieux
ne pas deviner si on ne comprend pas la phrase.
Le QCM évalue le vocabulaire de tous les jours et du commerce ainsi que les points de
grammaire les plus difficiles pour ces étudiants. Certaines expressions leur ont posé
problème :
