Volume 70, Number 2, Fall 2015 NEW CHURCH FACILITY News of Quebec Semi-annuel missionary news publication Assemblies of Christians in French Canada Editor Richard E. Strout 31 Willowdale Sherbrooke, Quebec J1M 0B6 *** News of Quebec P.O. Box 1054 Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada J1H 5L3 Office (819) 820-1693 [email protected] Publications Mail Agreement # 40032062 Fall 2015 Volume 70, Number 2 ISSN 0384-5168 Gifts for the support of the work or workers mentioned in this periodical may be made payable to NEWS OF QUEBEC Box 1054, Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada J1H 5L3 EDITORIAL It was seven decades ago, just about this time of year, that the first issue of this magazine saw the light of day. How many three-page, mimeographed copies of that initial number were scattered across North America and elsewhere only the Lord knows. But then, too, only He knows the full scale of the impact that News of Quebec has had in stimulating interest in and prayer for the work here in la belle province. All praise and glory be to His name. New assembly buildings are front and centre in this issue along with a report on activities, a testimony of long-term service overseas emanating from Quebec as well as the annual updated list of names and addresses for workers and assemblies throughout the province together with the financial report. As you read, please remember to pray. -3- NEW CHURCH FACILITY - Marj Robbins - L’Assemblée chrétienne Source de Vie was born in 1989, as an offshoot of the older Sherbrooke French Assembly founded in the 1940’s and still in operation. Over the years Source de Vie moved several times, always using rented quarters for its meetings. The last move took place in 2006 when Grace Chapel on Montreal Street kindly rented us the second floor of their building. Since there are a number of evangelical churches there in the downtown part of the City it was felt that Source de Vie should one day move to another area in order to have a more effective outreach. In 2008, with the blessing of the Assembly, one of the couples launched a children’s ministry in the elementary school close to where they were and still are living in the Mont Bellevue area of Sherbrooke. The Lord has blessed the activities of the Club over a 7-year-period and many children and their families have been touched by this Gospel outreach. One activity of the Club has been to send children from non-Christian families to a Christian camp for one week during the summer. The last two years have seen 55 and 56 children respectively enjoying this -4- experience and some have trusted Christ as Saviour. The Lord has often amazed us by providing gifts from different sources to cover the high cost of this particular effort. For years the group has felt the need to move into the outreach area in a more permanent way, and has had an eye on a former restaurant ideally located near the school. Certain roadblocks, too numerous to mention, stood in the way of procuring it and other options were considered but our conviction never left us that this is where the Lord would have us move. Finally the building was put up for sale and by God’s grace we were able to purchase it in April of this year. It is in need of extensive renovations and once again we are trusting the Lord to provide so as to make it the new home of our Assembly which will take on the name Église du Mont Bellevue. Our leadership asks for intense prayer that the Lord will provide for this next and each subsequent step. It is possible to view a video online regarding the details of this project at www.emontbellevue.com. The video can be seen in both English and French. -5- RECONSTRUCTION AT CAP-DE-LA-MADELEINE - Stéphane Demers - It is now a full year since the area of the former church building was cleared of debris from the fire and a new foundation was put in place. Autumn has now arrived and we are encouraged to be able to announce that work on the new construction is 90% complete. We thank the Lord for the thousands of hours of volunteer labour as well as for the generous gifts received from around Quebec, from churches in other provinces, the United States and even from Switzerland. At the same time, we are equally appreciative of those who have prayed for the work of the Gospel here at the Cap, that it might continue its 70-year history. Very soon we will officially begin activities in our new building, the capacity of which is twice that of its present membership of 150 persons who make up the first generation to occupy this facility. We firmly believe that this new construction will be an instrument that our Lord will use to reach out to a community that more than ever needs to experience the love of God that fills us and overflows for those around us. May His glory shine forth from this place to the surrounding area and even to the ends of the earth. THEN NOW -6- A LINK WITH THE PAST Presenting missionary Doris Pitman, still active at 96 years old Martin Jalbert and Marj Robbins In December of last year, commended worker Martin Jalbert had the privilege chatting with this amazing woman, still very much involved in the Lord’s work. His brief visit with Miss Pitman was very encouraging and left him wanting to know even more about her history. The following is a brief summary of an interview between her and Marj Robbins earlier this year. How did your missionary career begin? In 1942 I left my work in Sherbrooke in response to a need at Rollet, in the Abitibi region of northwestern Quebec, where the believers had begun a dissentient school for the children of French-speaking parents recently saved out of Roman Catholicism. I replaced Mrs. Della Davey who was pregnant with her first child. Among the students was 11year old Gaston Jolin along with some of his brothers and sisters. A year later, I left to teach at Girardville in the Lake Saint-Jean region of the province. There, too, the believers had recently established a dissentient school for francophone children. Following the war, in 1947, when the door was opened to pursue my original plans to serve the Lord in Angola, I left to spend the next 35 years there in missionary work before returning to Sherbrooke where, from a distance, I now continue my efforts on behalf of Angola. -7- What languages did you speak in Angola? My work was carried on in Portuguese and in Chokwe. I also picked up a good bit of Bengala, Songo and Umbundu, but was never able to really converse in those languages. Chokwe was actually the language of those among whom I worked. What were your main activities during your 35 years in Angola? I began by teaching school in the lower grades, all in Portuguese. This was followed by visits to surrounding villages, finding students who needed education and could attend our boarding school. In the 1950s, the New Testament in the Chokwe language was revised and I began typing the text. Then the Old Testament was translated and I continued until I had typed the entire Bible in Chokwe! Another part of my work was ministering to women. Eventually, we were able to conduct girls’ camps out in the bush where we spent wonderful times with the girls, teaching them God’s Word and organizing various activities for them. We got the men to construct rudimentary cabins for these camping experiences to provide secure facilities for the campers. My helpers and I slept on air mattresses on folding cots. As you can see, even today, these many years later, the Lord continues to bless me with young helpers. What are you working on with your computer here in your room at Grace Christian Home? I am in the process of translating into Chokwe for believers in Angola a booklet entitled “Who Is God and How Can We Know Him?” When completed, it will be read over by my colleague, Marjorie Beckwith, now 88 years old, with whom I laboured for many years out in Africa. Then it will be -8- sent to Angola for verification before being printed and distributed. We get together regularly to complete projects which are then shipped to Angola via containers. Martin’s reaction to his visit with Doris Pitman and to the above interview with Marj Robbins was to say, “For me one thing is certain. The word “retire” is nowhere to be found in Doris Pitman’s vocabulary! This dear sister is an extraordinary example of a woman of God who served and continues to serve her Saviour among our assemblies. To God be the glory!” What comes to mind here are the words of the apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 4:7-8. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. Editor’s note : A contemporary, first-person account of Doris Pitman’s labours in Rollet and at Girardville in the Lake-Saint-Jean region of Quebec prior to her departure for Angola appears in pages of Ebb and Flow: A History of Christian Brethren Churches in French Canada - 1926-2010. The book will be available early in the New Year to coincide with the ninetieth anniversary of assembly work here in la belle province. -9- COMING SOON (aussi disponible en français) RichaRd E. The beginnings of the conference coincide with the arrival of Joseph and Jessie Tremblay and the establishment of an assembly testimony in Rivière-du-Loup in the mid-1970s. Joseph went home to be with the Lord in 2006; Jessie continues faithfully at the local assembly. Attendance was good, numbering in the forties, with participants coming from Quebec assemblies as far away as Farnham in the Eastern Townships, Jonquière in the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean region, New Richmond on the southern Gaspé coast and Baie Comeau on Quebec’s south shore. This year’s theme was that of Sanctified Saints Serving God in a Hostile World. Seven brethren ministered on the theme, each one approaching it from a different perspective. Meetings were held, as usual, in the local Cegep, with lunch and supper being served in the cafeteria. All expenses were underwritten by the local assembly with a receptacle being made available for those who wished to participate in the cost of meals. A much-appreciated book table was provided by the Librairie chrétienne de Québec (formerly Service d’orientation biblique). -11- COMMENDED WORKERS in full-time service with assemblies of Christians in French Canada Luc Arel (Manon) 671, rue de la Vaudréal Sherbrooke (Québec) J1N 1X9 Tel.819-564-3414 [email protected] Noël Aubut (Francine) 301-300, rue St-Georges St-Lambert (Québec) J4P 3P9 Tel. 450-671-9196 [email protected] (Prayer appreciated.
