Here is the programme of events planned for the summer.
As a special feature (page 2) we present brief profiles of the members
of the Activities Sub-Committee. These are the people who, throughout
the year, work behind the scenes to come up with ideas, plan the days,
book the guides and speakers, research original places to eat and
haggle with restaurateurs for good menus at reasonable prices etc., etc.
All this and trying to have a Plan B as well . . .
Voici le programme des activités organisées pour la saison estivale.
Comme article spécial (à la page 2), nous présentons brièvement les
profils des membres du comité des activités socio-culturelles. Ces
personnes qui, pendant toute l’année, travaillent dans les coulisses
pour proposer de bonnes idées, organiser à l’avance les journées,
retenir les guides et conférenciers, trouver les endroits insolites pour
les repas et discuter les menus- et les prix ! – avec les restaurateurs,
etc., etc. Et, en plus, essaient d’avoir un Plan B . . .
Language Workshops / Ateliers de Langues
Avec 15 ateliers proposés et 127 membres, 2014 est une bonne
année pour les ateliers de langue. Nous espérons continuer dans
cette direction. Comme à l’accoutumée, les participants aux ateliers
de cette année seront prioritaires pour réserver leur place jusqu’au 30
juin (des fiches de renouvellement d’inscriptions seront disponibles
auprès des animateurs en juin). Après cette date, les places seront à
la disposition de tous les membres de FGB.
La cotisation annuelle pour chaque atelier est fixée à 30 euros. Des
renseignements complémentaires vous seront transmis sur le site
web de FGB et dans le prochain bulletin.
With 15 workshops proposed and 127 members, 2014 is a good year
for the language workshops. We hope to continue in this direction. As
usual, existing members of workshops will have priority in reserving
places until 30 June (renewal forms will be available from workshop
facilitators during June), after this date, places will be available to all
FGB members.
The annual fee for each workshop will be 30 euros. More information
will appear on the FGB website and in the next bulletin.
Danièle et Claudine, coordinatrices des ateliers de langues
A Bilingual Play
Students who are members of the theatre club at Saint Etienne private
secondary school in Cahors, will be performing a bilingual play in
connection with the commemorations of WWI. Archive footage and
videos will also be shown on stage. The play was written by Yves
Mannessier, a history and geography teacher, with British audiences in
mind so as to share with them this beautiful and tragic page of our
common history. Last November this play was awarded official
accreditation from the WWI Centenary Celebration Committee.

In Beuvry, a small Artois village, Jeanne, only 14, and her mother are
struggling to cope, all the men having gone to war. Reginald, a British
soldier and his mates of the Royal Engineers arrive on the scene…
at the Cahors Municipal Theatre on Tuesday 13 May 2014 at 8.30 pm

At the last Committee meeting, Trish Milton
volunteered to become vice-president, following the resignation of Nicolette Viviani,
and was unanimously voted in.
As a long-standing member of the Committee and also a stalwart member of the
Activities Sub-Committee, Trish is well
known for the energy and enthusiasm she
contributes to the association.

Angela Dunn Have lived in St Martin de Vers for nearly 18 years.
We have a Golden Retriever, Sam. Joined FGB in 1997 and I ‘ve
been secretary, editor and am now vice-president and coordinator
of activities. When I was young, my mother organised talks and
outings for the local Electrical Association for Women. I‘m simply
following in her footsteps. Working with the other sub-committee
members is a pleasure. We get on well together and help each
other out, which makes organising events easier. Likes: anything
to do with nature, dog-walking, cooking, swimming.
Danièle Crouxinoux Mariée avec un fils. Nous avons travaillé
dans la banlieue parisienne avant de nous installer à Cahors (la
ville natale de mon mari) pour la retraite. Nous avons rejoint
l’association en 2010 dès notre arrivée. J’aime les arts en général,
la nature, les animaux. J’adore peindre et écrire (particulièrement
des poèmes). C’est une joie pour moi de faire partie de l’équipe de
FGB et d’animer un atelier. En tant qu’ancien professeur c’est un
plaisir de pouvoir aider les autres dans notre langue si difficile.
Julie Danjean Both my French husband and I travelled extensively around the world before settling in Cahors, Patrick’s birthplace, in 2007. We have 2 children and 5 grandchildren. I previously worked for a major American firm as Facilities Manager
which involved organising events and conferences for up to 300
people. Joined the sub-committee in 2008; also attend one of the
language ateliers. Leisure : I ‘m interested in antique linen and
lace, have an eclectic taste in music and love to cook.
Marie-José HARO Professeur de français en retraite. Mariée, 4
enfants, 5 petits - enfants. Loisirs : lecture, cinéma, voyages,
musique, cuisine, encadrement. Vie associative : a été Présidente
de l’association A.V.F. pendant 5 ans; inscrite à F.G.B. depuis 7
ans; fait partie du sous-comité depuis 3 ans. Particularités : a
déménagé trente fois depuis sa naissance et essaie de parler
anglais depuis plus de 50 ans !
Trish Milton I came to live in France in 2004 with my partner
Richard . Joined FGB and since 2006 have been a member of the
Activities Committee. It’s one the best things I have done with my
new life here as I’ve both learnt a great deal about our region and
also made some very special friends in the process. When not
spending time with FGB my main passion in life is travel and I’ve
managed to visit many parts of the world. I also enjoy taking part in
our local vilage events and struggling with the French language.
Ole Nikolajsen Je suis danois mais ai travaillé pour des
compagnies britanniques du monde entier. La famille de ma femme
est d’origine française. Nous sommes impressionnés par la culture
française et son mode de vie et nous avons décidé de nous installer
en France il y a huit ans. Nos centres d’intérêt sont la gastronomie
et le vin de Cahors et nous participons à plusieurs activités
culturelles. Cahors est pour nous le paradis terrestre.
Madeline Serre We bought our house here in the first week of
the millennium and joined FGB the following year. I worked in
publishing in London for many years so in 2005, when Angela
advertised for someone to take over as editor of the Bulletin, I
answered the call. Married with 1 daughter and 1 grandchild and
another imminent. My interests are history, prehistory, classical
music, art and walking so the Lot region suits me very well.
Sue Shilvock Part of the social committee FGB team forthe last
5 years. As an ex- teacher having organised many school trips,
the FGB outings are sheer pleasure!
A lover of classical music and art,and very interested in all
aspects of sport, fitness and well-being; also in travel,people
and places. Have lived and worked in Africa and - in recent years
-France. Married with 3 children and 5 grandchildren. So family
life has always played a large part in our lives.

To give a festive tone to a Labour Day when nearly everyone is taking a holiday, we will have our picnics together in
the grounds of the estate (or indoors, if the weather is not
good enough).
Then we will view the temporary exhibition taking place in
the castle Orangerie, where we will meet the artist, Laurent
Lavergne and also be given an opportunity to taste the
wines of Château Les Bouysses.
Directions: from Cahors take the D811 to Mercuès and
then the D12 towards Cessac and Douelle (rue du Lac de
Courtil); then turn immediately to the left as soon as the
signs to Château Les Bouysses are visible.

IT’S MAY! So a ’blooming lovely’ day out is required. First
we will meet in Varen and have a guided tour of the village
lead by a member of the local Tourist Office. This will be in
French with English translation when required.
After this, we have arranged to have lunch at the restaurant
‘Le Moulin de Varen’ where the mechanism of the mill can
be seen through a glass panel that has been set into the
floor.
C’est le mois de mai ! Alors, il nous faut une belle sortie
fleurie. D’abord, nous nous retrouverons à Varen pour une
visite du village guidée par un membre de l’Office du
Tourisme local. La visite sera donnée en français avec
traduction en anglais au besoin.
Après nous irons déjeuner au Moulin de Varen où, par un
plancher transparent, nous pourrons voir le mécanisme du
moulin.

as Caussard. No need to go into the town centre, take the
D926, direction Septfonds. Just after Septfonds, watch out
for a right hand junction, D5 to St Antonin-Noble-Val; go
through St Antonin and cross the river Aveyron and continue eastwards direction Cordes sur Ciel. Shortly after you
cross back over the river, turn left on the D958, signed Varen.

with us for this special evening Paul Strang, author of ‘SouthWest France. The wines and winemakers’ (University of
California Press), who will lead a structured tasting of a
selection of wines. Vignerons from three vineyards will also
be present to help us taste their wines - Sue Spring, from
Domaine de Garinet (Cahors), Sandrine Annibal from the
Domaine de Lancement at Thézac-Perricard, a small
appellation in Lot-et-Garonne, and Oliver et Astrid
Bonnefont from the Domaine de Peyres-Roses in Gaillac.
There will, of course, be the possibility to buy the wines
which please us. After the tasting there will be the usual
“soirée bilingue” light supper of pizza, salad and dessert
to round off what should be a memorable evening.

parking Place de Gaulle, ont lieu le premier mercredi de chaque
mois. Les horaires ont été choisis afin que l’on puisse y passer
entre les visites au marché et celles à la bibliothèque FGB. Ces
causettes sont un très bon moyen de revoir les anciens amis, d’en
trouver de nouveaux et, sutout, de pratiquer l’autre langue ! Venez

LE BEAU VILLAGE DE CARENNAC

Prepare yourselves for a treat and come and join us for a day at the beautiful village of Carennac, situated on the Dordogne
River. One of the ‘ plus beaux villages de France’ it is a medieval gem with the remains of the historic abbey of Cluny at
it’s centre.
We shall meet at 10.30 at the tourist office and begin with a visit to the Cloisters, to be followed by a visit to the Heritage
Centre of the Dordogne Valley with it’s wealth of fascinating information about life in the middle ages in this area.
Lunch has been arranged at the Hotel Fénelon in the heart of the village at 12h30.
The afternoon has been left free to wander as you please –
a wonderful opportunity to peruse the charming little cul-desacs and tiny passages of Carennac and to meander along
the banks of the river. It is a picturesque haven for the artists
and photographers amongst us, so don’t forget to bring your
easels, paints, pastels and cameras !

Préparez-vous à une bonne surprise. Venez nous rejoindre pour passer une journée au beau village de Carennac, situé
au bord de la Dordogne. Un des ‘plus beaux villages de France’ c’est une merveille avec, en son centre, les vestiges de
l’abbaye historique de Cluny.
Nous nous retrouverons à 10h30 à l’Office du Tourisme et nous commencerons par la visite des cloîtres. Ensuite nous
visiterons le petit musée local de la vallée de la Dordogne, qui contient une mine de renseignements fascinants sur la vie
au Moyen Age de cette région.
Pour le déjeuner, nous avons choisi l’Hôtel Fénélon situé au cœur du village.
L’après-midi : quartier libre. Une excellente occasion de trouver les impasses charmantes et les petites ruelles de
Carennac et de flâner aux bords de la rivière. C’est un refuge pittoresque pour les artistes et photographes de notre
association. N’oubliez donc pas d’apporter vos chevalets, couleurs, pastels et appareils photos !

Directions. Take the A 20 motorway travelling north and exit
at Junction 55. Take the D803 signed Martel ( about 13 km)
and at Martel turn right on the D840 towards Gramat, go
down the hill and cross the Dordogne at the Pont de Gluges.
200 metres after the bridge, turn left on the D43 signed
Carennac. Continue along this road, through the village of
Floriac,to Carennac, Cross over it’s narrow bridge and follow the signs to the car park.
Directions: de Cahors prendre l’autoroute A20 en direction
du nord et prendre la sortie 55. Prendre la D803 signalée
Martel (environ 13 km) et à Martel tourner à droite sur la
D840 vers Gramat. Descendre la colline et traverser la
Dordogne par le Pont de Gluges. Deux cents mètres après
le pont, tourner à gauche sur la D43 signalé Carennac.
Suivre cette route jusqu’à Carennac. Passer sur son pont
étroit puis suivre les panneaux signalant le parking.

Many of us have heard of Joachim Murat - local boy made good. Married the boss’ s sister, that’s to say, Napoleon’s sister,
and ended up King of Naples. We shall visit his birthplace, which is now a museum full of interesting relics of his life, in
Labastide-Murat.
Then on to Gramat for a lunch at a Bonne Tables du Lot, ‘Le Relais des Gourmands’. See menu below.
After lunch we stay in Gramat to visit the Centre National d’Instruction Cynophile de la Gendarmerie, (Dog Training Centre
of the Gendarmerie) and see a demonstration of police dog handling. The centre trains 250 dogs and 350 handlers a year,
even offering courses for foreign police forces. After the demonstration, which lasts about an hour, there is a possibility of

La plupart d’entre nous ont entendu parler de Joachim Murat, originaire du Lot, qui s’est marié avec la soeur de son patron,
en l’occurrence Napoléon, et qui a fini par devenir Roi de Naples. Nous visiterons son lieu de naissance, qui est maintenant
un musée, plein des reliques de sa vie, à Labastide-Murat.
Puis nous irons à Gramat pour déjeuner dans une Bonne Table du Lot, Le Relais des Gourmands. (Menu ci-dessus.)
Après déjeuner, nous resterons à Gramat pour visiter le Centre National d’Instruction Cynophile de la Gendarmerie afin de
voir une démonstration donnée par des maîtres-chiens. Chaque année le centre forme 250 chiens et 350 stagiaires et
même organise des stages à la carte pour les délégations étrangères. Après la démonstration d’une heure, nous aurons

Directions: From Cahors take the D820 towards Brive. Approx 1 km after the Monument to the Resistance and the
Deported, take the D677 on your right to Labastide-Murat. Follow the one way system and make a left turn into the Church
Square. Meet by the North door. If you come on the A20, exit junction 56 and follow signs for Lab astide-Murat. Follow the
one-way system and again find the Church Square on your left.

FGB members Puk and Ole Nikolajsen have once again
kindly offered us the facilities of their beautiful garden for a
picnic/ barbecue – which can be under cover if necessary.
An aperitif will be provided as well as salad, bread and a
cheeseboard.
Please bring picnic chairs and tables, crockery, cutlery,
glasses, etc. and your own food and drink. If you would like
to use the barbecue you are welcome to do so.
Numbers are limited, so places will be offered on a first
come first served basis. Well-behaved dogs allowed but
owners MUST clean up after them.
Please return the reply slip by 16 July.

Directions : From the Louis-Philippe bridge in Cahors take
the D653 towards Figeac. After leaving Cahors, take the first
right after the roundabout and follow the road for about half
a km. Turn right at the sign for Tuileries (you will see the
nursery), disregarding the No Entry sign. Pass the nursery
and you will find No. 1037, a white house, on the left (look for
the balloons on the gate). There is plenty of room to park.
Directions :Du pont Louis-Philippe à Cahors, prendre la

compte du panneau ‘défense d’entrer’. Passer la pépinière
