INFO SUISSE
Dear Members,
I hope that everyone has enjoyed a lovely summer and has had a
chance to take a break from their hectic day-to-day lives. Now, the
summer is over, and it is back to business! This is the busiest and
most exciting period of the year for the Chamber as our two most
important annual events fall into this period.
On September 12th the Chamber held its yearly golf tournament,
which, as in previous years, was again a big success. Not only
did we have beautiful weather but we also had a good turn-out
and some great prizes were won. Everyone involved had a great
day. I wish to convey my thanks to the Chamber golf committee and volunteers, expertly
managed by Hans Munger, to the many prize sponsors, and, most importantly, to all the
participants. Everyone was critical in making the event a success.
Our next big event is now right around the corner as well. Preparations are well under way
for our Dinner & Dance which will once again be held at the King Edward Hotel downtown
Toronto. This event is not only an important date in the calendar of our members but also
for the Toronto Swiss community at large as the event has been a steady and important
fixture in the pre-Holidays social calendar for many decades. Another event that you do not
want to miss is our October 26th networking event that we are organizing in collaboration
with the Canadian German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, visit our website for more
details (www.swissbiz.ca).
The focus topic of this issue of info Suisse is architecture. While this keyword evokes many
aesthetically pleasing thoughts of projects by great Swiss architects such as Le Corbusier
and Botta, it also brings to mind some exciting recent additions to the Toronto cityscape.
For me personally, though, the term architecture is closely linked to my personal professional area of expertise. Architecture is a critical, if not the most important, component of
any information technology project. Not only is a solid information architecture imperative
to guide users smoothly through an application but a well thought out technical architecture is key for any application to work properly. Even for a Chamber to operate efficiently a
simple yet sensible framework is needed; the board has invested quite a bit of time over
the last few years in streamlining its structures and, I think, the Chamber has therefore
been able to offer some great value to its members despite its limited resources.
Happy reading!

Chers membres,

Architecture
INSPIRING OFFICE ENVIRONMENTS
AND GREEN ROOFS
By Peggy Hlobil-Emmenegger, B. Arch., OAA, of
UCARCHITECT, Toronto
Not so long ago our lives were full of bland
and unimaginative working environments,
focused on maximizing floor space, value
engineering, commercial returns, etc. The
interior was ultimately expressed in square
metres.
There is now a growing awareness of the
role of the workplace in our society and it is
increasingly apparent that buildings have a
direct influence on the humans who live and
work in them. Workplaces are moving away
from the monotone, one-size fits all trend of
the early 90’s towards more inspiring environments where users are provided with a
diversity of spaces which support their specific tasks. These provide tangible benefits in
terms of the well-being and productivity of
the workforce, in some cases transforming
the way the occupants do business.
4
INFO SUISSE
The open-plan and diverse layouts
inspire collaborative approaches at work and
encourage a cross-pollination of creativity
and teams. The occupants weave through
the building from quiet, focused areas such
as group workstations or touch-down spaces
for people working outside the office to
communal areas with soft seating, meeting
nooks with whiteboards to facilitate discussion, and conversation pits - some clearly
defined, some created by movable partitions. No one is immune to the organic flow.
Inspired workplaces do not extend only
to the interior - the same can be said for
the exterior spaces. Does the building offer
views or access to communal landscaped
exterior environment implemented for business or recreational use; or does one look
onto miles and miles of hot asphalt? Large
city centers are dominated for the most
part by materials that are uniform in texture
and functional in appearance. The aesthetic
of the twentieth century places emphasis
on the building as a structure rather than
as a part of the environment. Green roofs
counteract this trend, reclaiming otherwise
disregarded space by providing aesthetic
variation and stimulation. More and more
office buildings are incorporating green
roofs, not only for obvious aesthetic reasons
but also for private economic and sustainable benefits.
Buildings that feature and promote access
to vegetation have been known as having a
greater positive human health impact than
those without. Contact with vegetation, no
matter how brief, can be instrumental in the
alleviation of daily stress, decrease in the
number of sick days taken by employees and
increased job satisfaction and productivity.
Roofs are subject to the greatest amount
of heat loss in the winter and, as one of the
hottest surfaces in urban centers, the largest
amount of heat gain in the summer months.
Green roofs significantly moderate the heat
flow through the roofing system and reduce
the average daily energy demand for air
conditioning in the summer by more than 75
percent. Building owners can save money
on summer air conditioning and reduce
winter heating bills and so indirectly prolong
the service life of heating, ventilation and
air conditioning systems through decreased
use. In addition, when in combination with
photovoltaic panels, green roofs reduce
the operating temperatures of photovoltaic
panel systems, thereby increasing efficiency
and energy yield.
Membranes used in a green roof application are projected at having twice the life
expectancy of those used in traditional roof
assemblies, thus diverting waste from landfills that are quickly reaching capacity as well
as reducing re-roofing costs. Waterproofing
membranes are exposed to very harsh conditions which expedites the speed at which
they degrade. Within a 24-hour period
temperatures on traditional roofing system
can fluctuate by 45oC. Green roof can reduce
the fluctuations to 6oC, thereby protecting
the membrane assembly from tearing and
ultraviolet radiation.
Green roofs can be used to reduce the risk
of fire. Compared to the 50 kWh/m2 burning
heat load of traditional roofing system,
green roofs are a favourable alternative with
a burning heat load of 3 kWh/m2.
The number of wireless devices and
mobile telecommunications systems has
increased drastically over the past ten years

and is on a steady rise. This has raised concerns about the impact of electromagnetic
radiation on human health, such as higher
cancer rates. Green roofs are capable of
reducing electromagnetic radiation penetration by 99 percent, invaluable when
telecommunications equipment is located
on top of the build

Architecture
Green roofs have excellent noise attenuation, especially low frequency sounds.
They can reduce sound significantly by 40
to 50 decibels, ideal when near airports,
train tracks and other continuously noisy
environments.
Most aging North American cities have
combined sanitary and storm water sewer
systems that result in frequent combined
sewer overflows during heavy rainfall. Green
roofs, as opposed to impermeable surface
areas, reduce the burden on hard infrastructure, thereby prolonging its life expectancy
and reducing costs associated with repairs
and environmental clean-up. Green roofs
can reduce total run-off by 60% and detain
85% of the first flush in a rainfall event
for several hours before its release into a
sewage system, thus effectively reducing
the instance of flooding and helping prevent
untreated sewage from entering rivers,
lakes and streams.
The urban heat island effect is the temperature increase in urban centers caused
by the replacement of natural vegetation
with pavements, buildings and other structures. These impermeable surfaces convert
sunlight to heat, while the disappearance
of vegetation prohibits the occurrence of
natural cooling processes. The elevated temperatures promote chemical reactions that
mix to form ground level ozone and trigger
respiratory problems and cardiac irritability;
as well as create enormous demand for
air conditioning which can cause problems
6
INFO SUISSE
for energy suppliers. The Blackout of 2003
was a direct result of grid overload due to
the high need of air conditioning. Green
roofs not only reduce ambient temperature
through the reintroduction of vegetation but
also contribute to the mitigation of urban
heat island effect by covering some of the
hottest surfaces in the urban environment
– traditional black roofs can reach temperatures of 70oC.
High levels of air pollutants are directly
correlated with poor respiratory health and
instances of asthma in children. Green roofs
mitigate air pollution levels by lowering
extreme summer temperatures, trapping
particulates, and capturing gases. As an
example, 2,000m2 of uncut grass can remove
up to 4,000kg of particulate matter from the
air by trapping it on its foliage.
Green roofs provide habitat for various
bird species, acting as a stepping stone for
migration, as well as various endangered or
disappearing species such as the wild bees.
Over 80 percent of flowering plants require
insect pollination, but unfortunately the
hard truth is many pollinating species are
disappearing from most, if not all landscapes
due to loss of habitat. Green roofs provide
an opportunity to help these species by
incorporating bee attracting elements (plant
community that provides diversity and long
flowering period into their design and thus
supporting urban biodiversity.
As of 2003, it was estimated that over 15
percent of all flat roofs had been greened in
Germany.
The city of Toronto has recognized all
these benefits and as of May 2009, Toronto
is the first City in North America to have a
bylaw to require and govern the mandatory
construction of green roofs (from 20 to 60
percent of roof area) on new residential,
commercial, institutional and industrial
development with minimum gross floor area
of 2,000m2.
Change is afoot. Imagine what our cities
could look like!

The forces of nature can strike at any time.
Let’s discuss how to plug our defenses.
As the Earth’s climate is changing, so are the frequency and intensity of floods and storms. What’s the answer: retreat from the
most hazardous locations? Protect vulnerable areas with sea walls, drainage systems and better building codes? Or take measures
to transfer the financial risk and rebuild? All we know at Swiss Re is that, as our climate changes, we must adapt apace. Which is
why we’re helping countries and communities develop strategies to protect themselves against the forces of nature. Risk is the raw
material we work with; what we create for our clients is opportunity.

VELAGO PATIO FURNITURE
MAKING
DESIGNER
OUTDOOR
FURNITURE
AFFORDABLE
We all have experienced how hard
it sometimes is to
find European design furniture in Canada,
especially if we don’t want to spend a
whole fortune on it. This specifically applies
to outdoor furniture. “When I bought my first
patio set here in Toronto, I was shocked how
expensive it was, even on sale“ says Velago
founder Urs Villiger.
It had to be possible to offer designer
patio furniture at affordable prices. With
help from friends in Switzerland, Villiger
started his own business. The goal was to
streamline all processes from manufacturing to sales to achieve maximum quality
at unbeatable prices. The result was a lean
product line – Velago sells roughly only 25
different products today – together with a
sales concept that focuses mainly on online
sales, instead of pricey retail locations.
“We purchase our patio products directly
from the manufacturers and eliminate any
intermediary fees. Also, instead of offering
hundreds of different products, we focus
on just a few patio sets and accessories.
That way, we can significantly increase the
quality and at the same time optimize the
production costs.“
Velago’ collection focuses on modern
outdoor furniture and contemporary patio

INFO SUISSE
furniture designs and weather resistant,
extremely durable materials. The patio sets
are made from all-weather resin wicker and
powder coated aluminum frames, produced
to fulfill high quality standards.
ALL-WEATHER RESIN WICKER FOR
HIGHEST EXPECTATIONS
All-weather resin wicker was designed
predominantly for use in outdoor furniture.
It looks like natural wicker, but is made of
synthetic polyethylene fibres. This material
only requires minimal maintenance and is
resistant against the elements, i.e. the sun’s
UV-rays as well as against humidity, water
and frost.
While with traditional wicker, the colour
is painted onto the furniture, the colour of
all-weather resin wicker patio furniture is
contained within the fibre. Consequently, it
has a much longer life span and maintains
the elegant visual appeal of the patio
furniture. Resin wicker is also very elastic
and sturdy, providing for great stability and
seating comfort, those exact features that
traditional wicker is known for.
Furthermore, all-weather wicker requires
much less maintenance. It is very easy to
clean; dirt can simply be hosed off. Colours
are UV resistant and do not require to be
re-painted.
RESIN WICKER & THE ENVIRONMENT
It is not surprising that all-weather wicker
has become the material of choice for swimming pool lounge chairs, patio dining sets,
outdoor sofas and lounges and bistro sets for
condos and cafes. The new modern designs
have boosted the high popularity of resin
wicker furniture and it has become the new
trend in the entertainment industry for patio
parties, outdoor dining and lounging.

Bruno’s Tip
The Road To Ruin, Don’t Take It!
Becoming so convinced of their success,
their achievements, and their personality that they think of themselves as being
invincible. Think of Napoleon, the super-ego.
Criticism is necessary. It fulfills the same
function as pain in the human body. It calls
attention to an unhealthy state of things.
– Winston Churchill
THE ROAD TO RUIN,
DON’T TAKE IT!
I have seen it many times. Influential and
financially independent people enjoying
their lifestyle and then something happens
and they lose it all. Each one of these cases
disturbed me. I kept asking myself what
went wrong and always got the same
answer: they lost their ground. What do I
mean by losing their ground?
If they would have accepted critique
from their friends, their family, or even their
enemies and taken it seriously, they would
have been warned of their risky behavior.
But their feeling of superiority and their
inflated ego prevented them from accepting
critique.
In my long life I have learned that the
secret to success lies in our ability not only
to accept critique, but to ask for it! Accepting
critique allows us to correct our mistakes,
often before we make them. But if we close
our mind and discourage others from criti-
cizing us, we will pay a high price: clouded
judgment, a string of bad decisions, an ego
that is out of control and lots and lots of
stress that could easily have been avoided.
There are so many examples in today’s
life from people that are convinced that they
would never be caught or companies that
fell from superiority to insignificance. Think of
Madoff, Enron, Pan Am, Lehman Brothers, TWA,
CompuServe, and the list goes on and on.
But be careful, this relates not only to the
rich and famous, but also to normal people
like you and me. It has never been more
important to accept critique as now, in a
difficult world.
How are you dealing with criticism?
I have written a short beginner’s guide for
Chakra Meditation, the kind of mediation that
I do. It is well structured and leaves room for
free meditation. If you are interested, just send
me an email at [email protected] and
I will forward it to you. It is free of course, just
like Bruno’s One Minute eMail.

5 Tips for More Engaged Employe es
5 TIPS FOR MORE ENGAGED
EMPLOYEES
Excerpted from http://greatworkplace.wordpress.com/author/greatworkplace
provided by Karin Lindner of
Karico Performance Solutions
1. Train managers to notice the signs of
disengagement. Such signs typically
include increased absenteeism, tardiness, withdrawal, disinterest, and negativity. Performance may also suffer in
some cases. Often, managers are simply
too busy to observe the critical signs.
2. Expect managers to take the initiative in
initiating conversations to address signs
of disengagement and resolve issues of
concern. Simple open-ended questions
(“how are you,” “how are things going,”
or “how do you feel about that”) can
generally open up the conversation.
Hold them accountable for retaining
their best (Branham, 2010).
feeling valued, appreciated, or recognized for contributions; stress, workload,
and work-life imbalance; loss of trust
and confidence in leaders; perceived
unfairness or favouritism; and perceived
lack of support by leaders, managers or
supervisors on a personal and professional level (Branham, 2007; Vajda,
2007). Conducting periodic audits or
evaluations of how employees perceive
these aspects of the organization can
be helpful in getting a pulse of how
engaged your workforce is. An engagement survey is usually the perfect tool
to capture this information.
3. Emphasize to employees that they have
the primary responsibility of addressing their concerns and re-engaging
themselves into the workplace, and give
them the tools and support to do that
effectively. Such tools and support could
include training, development opportunities, coaching, feedback, work/life
flexibility, and more.
4. Recognize the effects that typical
shocking events or turning points may
have on employees. Sixty-three (63%)
percent of voluntary turnover is caused
by a shocking event. Such events may
include being passed over for a promotion or transfer, receiving a new boss,
having a disagreement with a boss,
witnessing a close colleague leave the
organization, witnessing a restructuring/
layoff, or enduring another significant
organizational change. Also, it’s important to recognize that exit interviews
typically do not uncover these events
or points where disengagement begins
(Branham, 2010). That’s why conversations prior to an employee’s exit are
crucial.
5. Get to know the reasons employees
disengage. The most common reasons
include: job or workplace did not meet
employee’s expectations; mismatch
between job and employee; not enough
coaching and feedback; too few growth
or advancement opportunities; not

SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE TRAVEL
INDUSTRY
By Suzanne Schuermann, I Love To Travel
Social Media is on the rise within the travel
industry; while the technology proliferates,
however, no one is sure of the direction.
The Internet has given a wide array of tools,
knowledge, and opportunities to both agencies and customers. You can take a virtual
street tour of Beijing and a few seconds
later watch a small ship navigate the fjords
of Norway. If you have a question about a
good local restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, you
can Google it and have an answer in less
than a minute. Travelers on twitter can give
you pictures of their trip and your friend on

The information for travelers is often
overwhelming and confusing; additionally,
the line between professional and enthusiast gets blurred online. Altogether, this presents a conundrum for the traditional travel
agency business as well as the average
traveler.
For the consumer, the saturated marketplace presents a glut of information to sift
through: what advice, among the millions
of pages, is practical? Is everything safe and
legal?
For the agencies, traditional clientele
are looking not just at information available
online but searching on giant hotel aggregators like Expedia and Travelocity
The solution is unique travel. Reports
state that consumers look now more for
“meaningful travel” rather than traditional
“luxury” (having the best of the best. While
anyone can comb through orbitz and find a
flight an a hotel, it still takes some experience and knowledge for a agent to find you
a five day trip that including eco-tourism,
scenic boat rides, hunting and a beach
stay. People in general, want unique and
affordable travel, and agencies, in this day
and age are situated to provide once-in-alifetime experiences. With the integration of
social media, unique travel and experiences
can be shared over the web leading to more
fascinating content and a true discussion of
travel opportunities. Now people can share
videos of truly unique stuff, get a conversation going skyrocket the popularity of a
previously little-know trip or destination.
Essentially, travel and social media will
foster a unique community looking for exciting experiences.
Adventure travel segues nicely from a
discussion of social media integration and
the challenges of the Internet age; travel
has moved beyond simple sightseeing and
luxury – it has moved in a realm of unique
travel. Adventure vacations offer more
than scenic views of five-star hotels; they

CRA AUDIT – WILL I BE
SELECTED?
Adapted from “The Blunt Bean Counter” by
Cunningham LLP
Both individuals and corporations can fall
victim to a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
tax audit. Aside from someone telling the
CRA you are involved in evasive activities,
here are some common scenarios that seem
to trigger the dreaded tax audit.
REASONS SPECIFIC TO INDIVIDUALS:
The CRA seems to regularly audit individuals
who claim expenses against commission
income or self employment income. In these
cases, the CRA gravitates to auto expense
claims and advertising and promotion
expenses they consider personal in nature.
Situations that can increase the likelihood of an inquiry (not an audit) include
claims for:
• a significant interest expense;
• an allowable business investment loss;
• tuition from a university outside Canada;
and
• child care for a nanny.
REASONS SPECIFIC TO CORPORATIONS:
Corporations seem to be selected for three
distinct reasons:
1. They carry on a business that is CRA’s
flavour of the year (prior flavours have
been pharmacies, contractors and real
estate).
2. Year to year expense and income variances are ‘abnormal’ or outside standard
ratios based on corporations in a similar
industry sector.
3. It is just your turn. While there is no hard
evidence to support this, it seems like
CRA runs down a list and if you don’t get
caught in regard to #1 or #2, your turn
just eventually comes up.
In all cases it is imperative that you keep
your source documents for the auditor; now
more than ever, the CRA wants source documents. It is also vitally important that you
try to keep your cool. In the end, the auditor
is just doing his or her job, and if you treat
them badly, you are not doing yourself any
favours.

SWISS FRANC NOW
DISQUALIFIED AS SAFE HAVEN
By Thomas Flury, Strategist, UBS AG
The Swiss National Bank (SNB) has put a
floor for EURCHF at 1.20 and we have high
confidence that the SNB will be successful in
protecting it. Past experiences show that a
clear line in the sand can be more easily protected than a fuzzy exchange rate target. The
most important task is to stabilise exchange
rate expectations of international investors.
They have now to learn that the Swiss franc
has been disqualified as a safe haven asset
in times of Euro-zone turbulence. With the
new target, the Swiss franc is now poised to
weaken together with the euro against the
global currency universe, whenever political
stress hurts the European currency.
Once markets realize that this is going
to happen, investors will have to look for
other safe haven assets. Gold and the two
Scandies now look even more attractive. We
keep our forecast at EURCHF 1.20 in three
months and expect a range for EURCHF 1.201.25 for the next twelve months.

SCCC ONTARIO —
2011 GOLF TOURNAMENT
The 24th annual golf tournament of the SCCC
took place on September 12 at the private
Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club, which
has been our popular venue for the last five
years. More than 80 players enjoyed a beautiful and sunny day of golfing and were later
joined by half a dozen novice golfers, who
attended our newly introduced golf clinic in
the afternoon. In the evening we welcomed
over 100 guests for dinner, raffles, entertainment and the Grand Prize draw.
Among our popular hole activities was
the Chalet Sujsse, kindly sponsored by
Lombard Insurance with Chef Herzig and
Ueli from H.U.H Imports serving Cheese
Raclette (generously donated by Emmi
Canada), Bündner-Fleisch and white wine,
assisted by the charming ladies from the
Swiss Club in national costume/Tracht, one
of them playing the alphorn. The Gelato
Fresco hole, kindly sponsored by Lindt &
Sprüngli, where gourmet ice cream was
being offered, was another big hit.
Nespresso was present at the tournament again, with gracious hosts Kiki and
Alex serving free Espressos and Cappuccinos
throughout the entire event. Another treat
were the freshly baked muffins donated
by Marché Restaurants. Lunch was kindly
sponsored by Stikeman Eliot LLP, while
Nestlé Canada donated spring water and
chocolate treats on the carts. Furthermore,
every golfer and dinner guest went home
with a $20 Lindt voucher and a 20% coupon
for Velago patio furniture.
Before and after golf, the players had the
chance to participate in a putting contest,
which was co-sponsored by 2 Market
International. A big ‘thank you’ also goes
to Kuehne + Nagel and Sue Fernandez for
sponsoring and manning the $10,000 holein-one. Alvin Gozum from Elegant Shots
Photography did a terrific job again taking
pictures throughout the day and evening,
which were displayed during dinner.

year’s golf contests:
