Induction Guide

Background Information
Prior to induction into the Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs, admission to and membership
in the Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs requires compliance with the following:

Each active member of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs can become a member of the Ordre Mondial
des Gourmets Dégustateurs, as long as he or she is sponsored by an Ordre Mondial des
Gourmets Dégustateurs member
The Chaîne’s International Headquarter (Siège Mondial) in Paris must be advised of a new
member and the admission fees paid.
When this two criteria have been met:
A Nomination certificate and an Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs membership card
are prepared and sent to the new member
The member also receives the tastevin and is presented with an Ordre Mondial certificate
during the Induction Ceremony
An Ordre Mondial Induction is Performed with a Vine Stem instead of a Sword.
The official Induction Ceremony takes place during a Chaîne des Rôtisseurs ‘Chapitre’ and after the
induction of Chaîne members.
There is however, an exception: as the Echanson and the Vice-Echanson are respectively members of
the national board or of the local Bailliage committee, they present themselves for the Chaîne
Induction and then again for the Ordre Mondial Induction.
For Chaîne members who have already been inducted and would like to enter the Ordre Mondial
des Gourmets Dégustateurs, an Induction Ceremony can also take place dPuring an Ordre Mondial
des Gourmets Dégustateurs Regional Chapitre Meeting.
This meeting must include the following elements:
- Tasting
- Induction
- Wine-tasting dinner with commentary on the chosen wines on the menu
- Have at least five inductions in order for the inductions to take place during an Ordre Mondial
des Gourmets Dégustateurs Regional Chapitre Meeting.
Designated members responsible for Inductions at a National Chapitre meeting are:
- Bailli Délégué and Echanson
- Announcer
- Drinks Officer
- Signature and Diploma Officier
Designated members responsible for Inductions at an Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs
Regional Chapitre Meeting are:
- Echanson and/or Vice-Echanson
- Announcer
- Drinks Officer
- Signature and Diploma Officer

Induction Ceremony
Bailli Délégué or Echanson: (speech and duration of speech depends on each individual and must
include the following:
“Following the Induction of Chaîne members, it is an honor for me to be able to induct the
members of the Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs. Founded in Paris on the 2nd of
September 1963, the Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs is a special section – the
“liquids section” – of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. Its purpose is to promote and enhance
appreciation of good wines, locally-produced brandies and high-quality liqueurs and spirits. The
members of the Ordre Mondial include persons with professional responsibilities in wines,
brandies, liqueurs and spirits as producers or distributors, and amateur. They must be members
of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, and will remain members of the Ordre Mondial des Gourmets
Dégustateurs only as long as they remain members of the Chaîne. Depending on his or her
profession, the Gourmet Dégustateur may be an amateur or professional member. I now invite
the nominated persons to move in front/or on to the stage.”
The Bailli Délégué or the Echanson takes up a position beside the Announcer, who calls the new
members. The later position themselves facing the stage to listen to the rest of the speech by the Bailli
Délégué or Echanson, who says:
“Ladies and Gentlemen,
As Bailli Délégué or Echanson of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, I salute you and invite you to take
the oath or le serment, of our Confrérie. Please raise your right hand and repeat the following
phrases after me:
(If possible in French, because we are part of a French organization)
Je fais le serment de toujours déguster en buvant, (à répéter)
de respecter le travail des vignerons et distillateurs. (à répéter)
(Oath in English)
I swear to always drink thoughtfully; (repeat)
And to respect the work of the vignerons and distillers; (repeat)
I so swear! (repeat)”
Individual Induction with Two Vine Stems
1. The Announcer calls the name and the member-to-be moves to the induction place.
2. The Echanson or the Vice-Echanson places a vine stock in the right hand of the future member
and pins the mini-tastevin on his ribbon.
3. The Bailli Délégué or the Echanson inducts the member with the second vine stock and repeats
the name, saying:
(In French if possible)
“Mons. ou Mme. XXX, ayant reçu votre serment, je suis fier de vous nommer Membre Gourmet
Dégustateur et je vous félicite”
(In English)
“Mr or Ms XXX, I am proud to welcome you into l’Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs.”
4. The member steps down from the stage, signs the register and receives the diploma, then
remains, facing the audience.
5. When all the inductions have been performed, the Bailli Délégué or the Echanson move to a
position either in front of or beside the new members.
6. At this point, the Drinks Officer arrives to offer glasses to the newly inducted members and to
the persons responsible. When everyone has a glass in his or her hand, the Bailli Délégué or
the Echanson says:

“Dear new members,
In the Ordre Mondial, we talk of an Echanson. – But what is an Echanson?
The Echanson was an officer who served drinks at the table of the prince.
I wish you a cordial welcome into our Confrérie, and we now drink to the health of the Chaîne
des Rôtisseurs and the Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs.”
(In French if possible)
The toast is: “Vive la Chaîne!
All new members repeat: “Vive la Chaîne” (drink half the glass)
The toast then continues with: “Vive les Gourmets Dégustateurs!”
All new members repeat: “Vive les Gourmets Dégustateurs” (drink the rest)
(In English)
The toast is: “Long live the Chaîne!”
All new members repeat: “Long live the Chaîne” (drink half the glass)
The toast then continues with: “Long live the Gourmets Dégustateurs!”
All new members repeat: “Long live the Gourmets Dégustateurs” (drink the rest)
“Ladies and Gentlemen, I hereby declare the Induction Ceremony closed. I thank you for your
attention.”
