NS new screens magazine mag 4 @ FOCUS WEBDOC : UN RETOUR AUX SOURCES DU DOCUMENTAIRE ? WEBDOC: A RETURN TO DOCUMENTARY ROOTS? Bonne lecture In a world of new media, documentaries – usually intended to be more informative than entertaining – are also undergoing a sea change and must face a new generation of content, since the Internet can create a unique experience merging documentary stringency with more interactive and playful aspects. This is the dawn of web documentaries, known as webdocs! These small multimedia objects can combine video, photo, text and sound... and entice web users to travel freely through a story, far from the linearity of traditional documentaries. Web pioneers have helped establish the first experiments, especially thanks to the commitment of TV stations like Arte TV: New York Minute and Prison Valley were huge hits, with over 600,000 viewings in less than a year. In spite of this success, questions remain. What will the future developments be? These webdocs are often produced by professionals from outside of the documentary sector. How will today’s documentary professionals be able to enlist these new media? What complementarity can be found between TV broadcasting and circulation on other platforms? What are the business models of these new platforms? Some early experimentation has taken place, especially with pooled expertise, as exemplified by the Exetera label, an emanation of both video gaming and documentaries. With webdocs gradually becoming part of our new webviewer habits, Arte has recently launched Addicts, the first interactive web fiction. That’s why this 4th issue of NSmag has decided to plunge you right into the heart of the topic, through articles and interviews to help you understand the approaches and feedback of those who are part of the adventure of 2.0 stories. Enjoy your reading! Webdoc: a return to documentary roots? Interactive audiovisual contents – often designated by the restrictive terms of web documentaries or webdocs – utilize all the possibilities of the web, and this necessarily changes the documentary production line. Uses, writing, skill sets, business models: this new hand of cards dealt brings new dynamics to the traditional documentary field. And instead of pitting classical audiovisual against new-generation formats, it’s rather an opportunity for mutual enhancement, between a model looking for a breath of fresh air, and new forms searching for identity and recognition. By turning towards non-linear narrative modes and web-based navigation – integral parts of interactive content – webdocs also unsettle uses: platforms and contents are designed in terms of web-surfer behaviour. More and more often, as well, the narration borrows from game play and video gaming principles. Multimedia logics necessarily correspond to a multi-expertise approach, something of essence for Joël Ronez (Arte Web): “Because these are holistic projects, webdocs place inventors, designers and directors on equal footing.” As Bénédicte Lesage (Mascaret Films) notes, difficulties may arise from the clash of different cultures: “When we were designing the Addicts web site, we tried to see how we could get this relatively marketoriented web culture to coincide with our editorial culture. We had to find a common language for this work since it had an auteur viewpoint and certain editorial needs that were new for the web agency designing the site.” This fine-tuning takes time but it represents a strength for project teams with complementary skill sets. Reading between the lines, this means the end of single authorship in favour of collective authorship: “The most successful projects are ones which merge a number of professions. There shouldn’t be a technical stranglehold over narration or vice-versa”, as stated by David Dufresne, co-author of Prison Valley. He explains: “I believe in the virtue of narration, of the story, of couching terms in writing, and thus I believe in the role of author.” So then it’s the author’s task to identify the forms of narration that best substantiate the story, and to pick the right talents for expressing this point of view. Co-author of New York Minute, Nicolas Venancio agrees: “As author-directors, we’ve moved beyond the confines of production and have truly begun working on managing entire projects. We’re at the origin of every project idea on the site, but we also instigated the agreement signed with Canon and we’ve organized a series of screenings to prolong the web project’s lifespan.” New tools, new jobs: there’s a new offer emerging as well as a search for new business models. For Yves Jeanneau, general commissioner of Sunny Side of the Doc: “Content aggregators are now beginning to budge, like Orange which is moving away from broadcasting but is committing to content production. This type of stakeholder opens avenues to 3 major streams of financing: foundations, which might invest in contents linked to their centres of interest, crowdfunding and brand content.” ns mag #4 5 CLUSTER Webdoc : un retour aux sources du documentaire ? Webdoc: a return to documentary roots? The latter was chosen by Cinédoc and Idée Originale. Christian Lelong, producer of T.I.R. Corridor 5 believes that this search for brand exposure space is necessary to finance projects: an Italian haulier, a European logistics hub and a tyre manufacturer were contacted for T.I.R. Corridor 5. As for Carole Mangold, she emphasizes that “obtaining financing from TV stations requires time and patience. As a matter of fact, alternative financing is now a priority for us.” In concrete terms? “By enlarging the platform horizon, the cross-media approach of Méditerranée en danger ensures access to other financing. Our first private backing is thus a skill-based partnership for setting up the web platform.” In the long run this site will showcase the environmentally-friendly projects of partner companies, in exchange for financial compensation. www.expeditionmed.eu Méditerranée en Danger >@=2C1B7=<2=1C;3<B/7@32=1C;3<B/@G>@=2C1B7=<5@3<=0:3 BDeSP^`]XSba|Q]ZSa0cRUSb €/WRSa[|Q|\ObRSQ][^|bS\QSa2WTTcaSc`4`O\QS!1]`aS>|bWbW]\S\ZWU\Sac`eeeSf^SRWbW]\[SRSc BDeSPaQV]]Z^`]XSQba0cRUSb€ 4c\RW\Ua^]\a]`aVW^T]`Sf^S`bWaS0`]ORQOabS`4`O\QS!1]`aS1]`aWQO=\ZW\S^SbWbW]\ObeeeSf^SRWbW]\[SRSc © DR C’est la voie qu’ont choisie Cinédoc et Idée Originale. Christian Lelong, producteur de T.I.R. Nicolas Venancio, auteur réalisateur writer-director 6 New-York Minute denotes the first joint development between Arte Radio and Arte Web. From the beginning, our idea was to suggest 2 parts: a 6-episode mini-series, and an interactive map of the city enabling the geo-localization of New York Minutes. We want web users to envision New York simply, thanks to an intuitive approach to the city and its districts, and we want them to be able to add their own NYM news items. At the start, the site had 100 New York Minutes in English, with 30 of them translated into French and German. Through our positioning as author-directors, we worked on this project for the first time with such intermediaries as a broadcaster (Arte) and a producer (TetraNewMedia): what we find is that there are relatively few breakthrough moments, and some long periods, lag times when the author must not stop but, to the contrary, must pursue the in-depth work. The experience is a positive one. Méditerranée en Danger (Mediterranean in Danger) follows in the wake of the eponymous scientific expedition that began in summer 2010 and tallied approximately 250 billion items of micro-waste floating in the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to the TV documentary, there will be a web platform with diversified content: short formats, webdocs, online games and brief animated features for teaching, especially through the lesite.tv and curiosphere.tv addresses. We intend to work with young people on the project and are now developing partnerships with schools around the Mediterranean rim. This is possible thanks to the platform’s interactivity and adapted educational operations, including environmental awareness, information and language learning via a dedicated site at: www.positive-ocean. org. Combining scientific and educational content, the editorial line of the project will help it target future developments... and available financing. This is also the approach chosen by Mascaret Films and Project Images Films, co-producers of Addicts: to use logical partnerships for reducing exposure on a highly-competitive market. “We’re small; but with this solidarity we can face difficulties while still maintaining our individual independence. Mascaret Films is well established in the field of stand-alone works, top-of-the-market fiction and prime-time writing. Project Images Films is known for its 26-minute daytime series, and combines international experience with a network of partners. Fundamentally, this partnership is based on mutual affinity and admiration, and an obvious complementarity of expertise. Besides our individual projects, we’ve identified shared possibilities.” With Croisières, France Télévisions found it reassuring to have two stable stakeholders at the table, sharing strong skills and experience in international co-productions. ns mag #4 7 FOCUS Webdoc, a breath of fresh air Addicts En dessinant de nouvelles voies, les productions interactives apportent au documentaire classique un nouveau souffle. By trailblazing new routes forward, interactive productions are providing a breath of fresh air to the classical documentary realm. As Joël Ronez puts it: “The web renews formats and treatment modes. Its true added value is its capacity to reach new viewers and to enable more participative narrative forms. There’s a wider choice of possibilities for authors, scriptwriters, producers and others.” These professionals can therefore enrich their offer by learning from webdocs, as envisioned by Marc Nardino of La Cuisine aux Images: “Our joint work with the Artefacts gaming studio targets creating new worlds on our documentary themes so that the full offer will be an itinerary leading viewers to a reading which differs from that of traditional documentaries. This offer will not replace classical documentaries on TV channels, but it will bring in new viewers, and it prefigures the upcoming content offer for connected TV”. Our business model is closer to documentaries or short films than to prime time fiction models. Addicts was co-produced by Mascaret Films and Project Images Films, based on a strategic and interdependent partnership: “Confronted with a crisis in French fiction writing, and given the supremacy of American fiction works, we’re re-thinking our artistic and business models to continue to defend auteur-based works.” In late January the partners were given the MOVIEMED 2011 grand prize for Croisières, a cross-media series (30 x 40’) rewarded for its general public TV approach and its economic and touristic potential. This is why we’ll be working with Artefacts and an editor from the video gaming sector, as sources of enrichment. We plan to use a “traditional broadcasting + web” combination in a transmedia vein, covering the fields of serious gaming, web documentaries and even dematerialized comic books. The source point remains TV broadcasting for the documentaries since this type of offer can only appeal to the channels with the deepest pockets. Most of the time, documentaries are made in coproductions, with each party investing in the elements it prefers: this always turns into a financial and editorial puzzle. Webdoc: a return to documentary roots? A new relationship to time can be established, as well as a more committed relationship to viewers/contents, even capable of extending into real life, as Yves Jeanneau sees it: “On an investigative documentary site, we can create a community and then adapt our content offer to its expectations; here a new DVD could be a reward for community members who could buy it in pre-sales or even help to produce it!” ns mag #4 9 10 CLUSTER Webdoc : un retour aux sources du documentaire ? Webdoc: a return to documentary roots? Because the Internet tends to eliminate intermediation between content creators and consumers, new avenues are spontaneously emerging for circulation. Yes, but... as they say. This is because, although web de-linearization helps partially avoid the editorial confines of the TV channels, these same traditional broadcasters are the only ones who have enough budget to invest in content production, as shown by the case of Addicts: “The help from Arte was of essence. If we include the funding from the CNC and the Aquitaine regional government, our financing was mainly public. Without this political backing to boost applied research and development, no one can move onto this field. And it’s the traditional broadcasters who have the necessary collaborative culture and the broadcasting capacity....” As for Nicolas Venancio and Mathieu Rochet, with New York Minute they realized that directors “who, on their own, have received backing from a broadcaster and the CNC are evidently sought out by producers.” For authors, then, the challenge is to unearth partners who will commit themselves primarily through their interest in the project. The aim here is to avoid excess pressure by broadcasters concerning audiovisual creative processes. This is helped by the fact that the COSIP is now available for Internet sites (financing 1/4 of the budget of the produced work). For Eric Garandeau, chairman of the CNC: “This reform, inherent to the converging media field, is keeping in step with the pace of history. Its implementation should enable audiovisual creation to follow the curve that connected TV is taking.” As we realize, the development of interactive content has forced authors and producers to question their operating modes and envision new approaches. Nonetheless, these new horizons are not wiping the slate clean of the fundamentals of classical documentary production: the freedom offered by these new contents – to the contrary – accentuates the very essence of all documentary work. In this effervescent emerging of new contents, those who really stand out are those who can offer a world view. In other words, web or not, the author’s intent remains the key to top-quality audiovisual content. At Cinédoc, Christian Lelong, has not forgotten this important condition: “As TV and movie documentary producers, we’ve also been working on crossmedia developments for 2 years. Little by little, we’ve seen the emergence of original projects designed first and foremost for the web, with content placed at the heart of this approach. In practice, we’re not fighting for a given market but rather for works, defending the authors.” NEWS B7@1]``WR]`#/ZPS`b]4OacZ] FOCUS www.cinedoc.fr T.I.R. Corridor 5 studies the drivers’ solitude and how they adopt multiple identities (long before Facebook, drivers were using aliases on CB radio), taking a dual approach: in the cab and outside of it. We decided to bring together cinema and web documentary, without compromise, tabling on web use potential: a portal for access to complementary contents as well as portraits, different tracks within the documentary for visits to the various locations (customs houses, truck diners, logistics hubs), and more. De quoi entrevoir de belles complémentarités entre programmes de stock et programmes de flux. www.imaginove.fr In this manner the web has enlarged horizons: “Just like when, a few years back, HD became the ‘ultimate’, today North America or Asia see the cross-media strategy as being a determining broadcasting criterion,” says Yves Jeanneau. “New sorts of writing, new formats, funding and circulation tools: all of the traditional forms will have to renew themselves, although they will survive.” The key point is not so much the aggregation of content – even top-quality content – but rather the editorial side: when used synergistically, techniques and content sow the seeds for new types of audiovisual productions. This means wonderful future complementarity between stored and flow-driven programmes. ns mag #4 11 CLUSTER NEWS Webdoc : un retour aux sources du documentaire ? Webdoc: a return to documentary roots? Sunny Side of the Doc “To recreate teams where the talents will be totally renewed” NS MAG: What are the challenges facing documentary production? The new formats and circulation media actually correspond to an earlier question for us: when you produce documentaries, you’re facing the ‘iceberg syndrome’. Until now we only used 7 to 10% of the dailies of a shoot, and the remaining submerged portion was generally of fine quality but non-usable, for reasons of cost. The move to digital, and then the arrival of webdocs on the scene has made it possible to plan upstream production differently. The big upheaval for producers – and the major difficulty – consists in trying to imagine all of the forms that contents might take on through Internet use and the convergence of contents. Here we’re closer to the concerns of a multi-media editor dealing with the logics of transmedia production; documentaries are especially well suited to this approach. NS MAG: In what way does web documentary production challenge that of other documentaries? One of the strengths of webdocs is that they force us to use other types of writing, to call formats into question and to mix genres (fiction, documentary, journalism, animation) so as to adapt the content to more precise targets. Convergence highlights the fundamental issue of segmenting contents and viewers, and it situates use and usage at the heart of content production. This means going back to almost the source of writing itself. The deus ex machina, or author-director, no longer exists. A new playing field has erased boundaries and changed core professions: it has become necessary to recreate teams where the talents will be totally renewed – and this can lead to problems with copyright, money and egos. NS MAG : What role can public service play in the emergence of a sustainable web production economy? Because public service is not buffeted by the profitability imperatives of private channels, it must produce creative contents on innovative platforms. It’s not enough to merely use catch-up viewing; the Internet is a noble and mature medium. The time has come to look at TV in a new light – and not simply as a parent medium – especially since there’s a strong demand on us to create TV and web productions where images are circulated, embodied and consumed. Web creators always need to have support for their creations, and that’s one of our roles. NS MAG : What horizons for web documentary development are provided by connected TV? TV ‘consumption’ is still primarily consumption of linear formats. Connected TV will provide more possibilities and interactivity: more editorial and commercial data, web or interactive versions that will augment the lifespan of TV formats, and so on. This will flesh out the range by offering catch-up viewing, VOD, and access to additional services. I don’t believe that this will hurt traditional broadcasting. To the contrary, it will enhance it and will contribute to the services associated with the main offer. Digital technology and new uses are a major challenge in the regions for creative industries and other areas of culture. Since its creation in 2006, Imaginove has anticipated these changes by bringing together sectors which, up until then, had never needed to work together, such as the cinema, the audio-visual sector, multimedia, video games and animation. With Cegos, Daesign, Interaction Games, Qoveo or Succubus Interactive – all French serious games professionals who attended the 2010 edition – were marketing and communication executives, HR managers, NGOs, video games designers, research laboratories and engineers. For Damien Briatte, director of the studio Les Tanukis and President of Imaginove, “the aim of the event is to present technological innovations and tools corresponding to changes in use and in final users”. Companies have long understood the interest in using video game resources to reach out to their targets, particularly since new media and new uses (social networks, Flash, stereoscopic 3D, the iPhone, the iPad or Microsoft “surface” tablets) open up the field of possibilities in the professional world. The 2010 edition was marked by the significant presence of European professionals from Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, and Germany. This success suggests “envisaging great innovations for the next edition and in particular make a leap forward in internationalisation”.
