LOCATION: The incident took place in the Indian Ocean off the Island of Rodrigues, the
10th parish of Mauritius.

Rodrigues is a volcanic island located in mid-ocean, 560 km east of Mauritius island. It
rises from the edge of the Mascarene Plateau.

Il porte une longue cicatrice à l’avant-bras, laissée par la morsure d’un requin. Il a déjà plongé à 70
pieds de profondeur, un record pour un Rodriguais. Il a été sollicité plusieurs fois pour ramener les
corps de noyés.
Irené Rose, 68 ans, ne peut toujours pas se passer de la
mer.
Aujourd’hui, il gagne sa vie comme opérateur de bateau de
plaisance sur le trajet Port-Mathurin-Ile-aux-Cocos. Il a
transporté dans son bateau l’équipe de plongeurs étrangers
qui a participé à la dernière édition de Raid Atlantide, une
chasse au trésor sous-marine. “Cette compétition s’est
déroulée pendant six jours dans la passe, à vingt pieds de
profondeur. Nous avons pu récupérer deux des quatre
indices et sommes sortis deuxième de la compétition”,
raconte le plongeur.

Attaqué par un requin
Irené a appris la plongée sous-marine avec Ali Hossen. “A 20 ans, j’ai plongé à une profondeur de
70 pieds et retenu mon souffle pendant une minute et 35 secondes. Aujourd’hui, je peux encore
plonger à 40 pieds.”
A 12 ans, Irené participe à sa première partie de pêche hors lagon. Quatre ans plus tard, il se lance
dans la pêche sous-marine. Mais le 6 février 1963, il va vivre sa mésaventure en mer : un requin a
failli lui arracher le bras droit. “Mo ti pik enn carang 7 livres avek mo fisil sous-marin dans la pass
Grand-Bassin. Enn requin 400 livres finn attrap poisson-la ek mo lamain et finn sarie moi. Mo finn
naz ar li sinon li ti pou arras mo lebra. Mo finn bizin lutter enn demi her pou capav tir mo lamain
dans so la machoire et saute recif”, raconte-t-il. plus grande
Irené sera secouru par son père et un garçonnet, Cyril Colette, qui se trouvaient non loin. “J’ai failli
perdre mon bras. Deux médecins n’ont pas réussi à suturer le tendon sectionné. Mais le Dr
Bathfield m’a permis de retrouver l’usage de ma main. Mon traitement a duré huit mois et j’ai dû
interrompre mes activités pendant une année et demie.”
Pendant 13 ans, Irené a participé à la pose de radeaux en haute mer et à la pêche aux crevettes.
“J’ai travaillé pour le compte d’un bateau français. C’était la bonne époque où on obtenait 10 % sur
les prises.” Irené a retiré plusieurs noyés de la passe de Grand-Bassin, dans le canal de Baie-auxHuîtres et à la passe de l’île-aux-Cocos, entre autres. “Ma plus grande opération a été de ramener
un noyé qui gisait par 35 pieds de fond à la passe Login où le courant est très fort.”
Comme pêcheur, le sexagénaire a beaucoup d’exploits à son actif. “Ali Hossen et moi, nous avons
déjà ferré un requin de 700 livres à Grande-Rivière-Sud-Est. J’ai aussi pêché un thon et une
carangue pesant chacun quelque 90 livres”.

Attack by a shark
Irene learned deep-sea diving with Ali Hossen. “Is 20 years old, I plunged to a depth of 70 feet and
retained my breath during one minute and 35 seconds. Today, I can still dive to 40 feet.”
At 12 years, Irené takes part in his first fishing party except lagoon. Four years later, he launches
out in underwater fishing. But on February 6, 1963, it will live its greater mishap at sea: a shark

Irené was helped by his father and a small boy, Cyril Colette, which were not far. “I failed to lose my
arm. Two doctors did not succeed in suturing the divided tendon. But Dr. Bathfield allowed me to
find the use of my hand. My treatment lasted eight months and I had to stop my activities during
one year and half.”
During 13 years, Irene took part in the installation of rafts in open sea and in fishing for shrimps. “I
worked for the account of a French boat. It was the good time when one obtained 10% on the
catches.” Irene withdrew several drowned master key of Large-Basin, in the Bay-with-Oyster
channel and with the master key of island-with-Coconuts, inter alia. “My greater operation was to
bring back one drowned which lay by 35 basic feet with the Login master key where the current is
very strong.”
Like fisherman, the sexagenerian has many exploits to his credit. “Ali Hossen and me, we already
shoed a shark of 700 pounds with Grande-Rivière-Sud-Est. I also fished a tuna and a carangue
weighing each one some 90 books”.
