Located near the borders of Italy, the Principality of Monaco and the County of Nice, Menton enjoys a favourable
subtropical microclimate that almost makes it unaware of winter. In any season, it is thus possible to take advantage of the
sovereign sea as well as the sunny mountains nearby. Menton is a paradise for
gardens but also an incomparable display of the architectures that have shaped
this secret Riviera at the heart of which everyone can wander in the wake of
famous names. From the Empress Eugenie to Jean Cocteau, so many have come
to this wonderful setting to find authenticity once more. The perfumes, colours,
tranquillity but also the diversity of activities that one can enjoy all year long
have made Menton « the pearl of France» according to the geographer Elysée
Reclus.
Moreover the City is the first in the Maritime Alps department to receive the
title « City of Art and History ».
City of Arts, favoured by nature, Menton offers discovery circuits on the trail of great names of the world’s culture. Menton
is primarily an atmosphere city. The old town is the historical heart and offers its shaded medieval lanes. The Saint-Michel
Basilica, with its campanin (bell-tower), composes with the Square of the Conception, one of the most beautiful baroque
buildings of the region.

“My city is a garden “
A city in which gardens have naturally taken a significant place, giving the
former the image of garden-balcony overlooking the Mediterranean.
Hectares of green areas, parks and city gardens, hundreds of trees bordering
the streets, coloured flower-beds everywhere in the city and seven exceptional
gardens. These were created in the 19th century by botanists - in particular
English. Taking advantage of the microclimate, they introduced tropical
species which have acclimatized Magnificently.
Markets and pedestrian street
It is practically impossible to stay in Menton without strolling down the pedestrian street. This central street is a must for all
visitors to Menton as it is packed with shops and restaurants and extends from the sea front to the "Campanin" garden. The
Municipal market is located between the old port and the old city. Overflowing with colours, exotic aromas and flowers
from the South of France, look out for Mentonnaise specialities such as lemons, spices, "barbajuans" (fried vegetables and
rice),and Socca... delicious! The warm welcome given by the local shopkeepers gives a glimpse of the Mentonnaise
