Menton
Le Prix Katherine Mansfield a vu le jour en 1970 sous la forme d’une bourse annuelle attribuée à un
écrivain néo-zélandais, afin de permettre à celui-ci d’effectuer un séjour de six mois à la Villa Isola Bella
à Menton, et de travailler dans le cadre même où avait vécu en 1920-1921 Katherine Mansfield, célèbre
auteur néo-zélandais.

Exposition Katherine Mansfield, une année à Menton
Katherine Mansfield se rend à Menton en 1920 à la recherche d’un meilleur
climat pour soigner sa tuberculose. Après avoir passé l’été en Angleterre, elle
loue à son cousin la villa Isola Bella dans le quartier de Garavan. C’est durant
cette période qu’elle écrit quelques-unes de ses plus belles nouvelles.

Semaine Néo-Zélandaise
Un ange à ma table est l’adaptation de trois récits autobiographiques de Janet Frame, lauréate du prix en 1974. Sur
fond de paysages de la Nouvelle-Zélande, Jane Campion
réalise ici son plus beau portait de femme (Prix spécial du
jury de la Mostra de Venise en 1990).
Enfant, Janet est aussi étrange que la couleur rousse de ses
cheveux. Atteinte de schizophrénie, c'est grâce à un prix
littéraire récompensant son premier recueil de nouvelles
qu'elle échappe à la lobotomie. Libérée et soutenue par un grand écrivain, elle
décide alors de quitter l'île pour voyager…

lauréat du prix en 1992.
A la mort de son père, Paul, photographe de guerre, revient
dans son village natal de Nouvelle-Zélande. Il y retrouve Célia,
la fille de sa première petite amie, qui rêve de découvrir le
monde. Le jour où Célia disparait, Paul devient le principal
suspect. Face au drame, il va retrouver son passé et ses secrets
oubliés…

The Katherine Mansfield Fellowship was inaugurated in 1970 and offers a monetary grant to a New
Zealand writer. The annual prize allows the successful Fellow to take up a six month residency at the Villa
Isola Bella in Menton, working in the same environment as the renowned New Zealand author, Katherine
Mansfield, who lived there in 1920-1921.

Exhibition : Katherine Mansfield, a year in Menton
Katherine Mansfield moved to Menton in 1920, seeking a mild climate to offer
relief from her advanced tuberculosis. After spending summer in England, she
rented the Villa Isola Bella in the Garavan district from her cousin. During her
time there, she wrote some of her most famous short stories.

Based on the three-part autobiography of Janet Frame, the
1974 Fellow. Against a backdrop of New Zealand landscape,
Jane Campion directs one of her most powerful portraits of
a woman (Grand Special Jury Prize, Venice Film Festival
1990).
As a child, Janet is as odd as the redness of her hair. An
impoverished transient childhood led to a nervous breakdown, misdiagnosis of
schizophrenia and electroshock therapy. The film traces her emerging confidence
as a writer, her travels to Europe and back to New Zealand as an internationally
successful author.
