It appears to be an appropriate occasion to reflect on Canada’s significant footprint in synchronized sk kating history. Read on to learn more… Although historically there are accounts of “combined figure skating” practiced in England at the Oxford Skating Society as early as 1838, the sport that North Americans are familiar with today began when Dr. Richard Porter formed the first precision skating team in An A n Arbor, Mic i higan in the 1950s. Teams fi first began forming in the U.S. and Canada throughout the 1960s. Th his era broug u ht with it a wave of new teams on the synchronized skating scene. A time of growth and rapid development, numerous teams were pushing the synchronized skating boundaries and were performing more creative and innovative routines. In 1977, Ilderton Winter Club hosted the first ever Canadian Invitaational Precision ev n Skating Competition. During this tim i e, Elizabeth Swan was also working at paving the way forr syncchronized skating in Ca C nada. Betweeen 1978 -1980 Swan chaired a committee to establish a precision skating f amework for Canada. Being credited as one of the founders of synchro skating in Canada, the National fr volu unteerr awar ard for sy s nchronized skating is named in her honour. By 198 80, 0 the sport had become very popular in Canada. In 1983, Canada held its first sanctioned National P ecision Sk Pr kating Championships in London, Ontario. Overall, there were 60 teams registered to compete and 22 2 teams made it to th he finals. The following year, in 1984, the US followed Canada’s lead and esttablished d its own National Precision Skating Championships. The end of the decade illustrated Canadian dominance on the i ternational stag in ge at the first International precision skating competition. At the 1989 Precision Team Cup in Sweeden, Canada demonstrated its dominance in the sport, by sweeping the podium in the Senior cateegory y. With synchronized skating achieving such remarkable success and attracting international attention, the 1980s also witnessed the intro r duction of the Adult category at the national level in 1988. In the 1990s, precision skating received the International Skating Union’s (ISU) official recognition as an acknowledg d ed disciplin ne of figure skating and in 1994 the ISU began sanctioning international competitions. 1983 Canadian Precision Skating Championships – Results Senior University of Western Ontario – Thompson Arena (London, ON) 1. The 1990s also witnessed the adoption of a more internationally understood term “synchronized skating” as the official name of the sport in 1998. Historical milestones continue to be established throughout the first decade of the 21st Century. In 2000, the very first World Synchronized Skating Championships were held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with twenty-one teams from seventeen countries competing. Since then, Canada has hosted the World Synchronized Championships twice, in Ottawa, Ont. in 2003 and in London, Ont. in 2007, where the event sold out and was a resounding success – causing the ISU Delegate, Mr. Courtney Jones, OBE, to comment that all World Synchro events should be held in London. In addition, synchronized skating was included for the first time as a demonstration sport in the 2007 Winter Universiade, the World University Games. The popularity of synchronized skating continues to grow in North America. In Canada alone 6060 skaters on 399 teams registered with Skate Canada in 2006-2007. If the last 25 years are any indication, the sport of synchronized skating will continue to gain recognition and momentum into the future. With the fast paced expansion the sport has been experiencing over the last several decades, it is only a matter of time before proud fans will be watching Canadian synchro skaters competing for Olympic gold.
