The Battle Against Aging
How to avoid the hype and gain real benefits

It is estimated that close to 70% of all North Americans take nutritional supplements regularly. In part,
this is because of mounting scientific evidence supporting their use, as well as growing concerns about the
quality of our food supply. As much of our food is genetically engineered, irradiated, chemically sprayed
or otherwise adulterated, diet alone may not provide all of the essential nutrition we need.
Werbach, Melvyn R. Foundations of Nutritional Medicine. Tarzana, Calif.: Third Line Press, 1997.

1993.
Studies indicate that approximately half of North Americans suffer from marginal nutritional deficiencies.
Some reputable scientists estimate that at least 80% of the public is deficient in vitamin D. While it may
be theoretically possible to get all of our required nutrients from diet alone, the fact is that most people
in North America do not do so. Even if one consumes a carefully created and prepared diet that meets the
Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), scientific research now indicates that the “optimal” level of
nutrients may be much higher than the currently published RDAs.

Many of us need to take a high quality multiple vitamin and mineral supplement to help maintain a
healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, many “natural” food supplements contain an awesome list of synthetic
fillers, additives which are detrimental to health. With some exceptions, pure vitamin and mineral chelates cannot be compressed directly into tablet form without the addition of binders, lubricants, diluents,
disintegrators, and colouring and flavouring agents. Some national brands even contain saturated hydrocarbons such as paraffin or wax, which can be deposited in the plaque of individuals suffering from coronary artery disease.

Most healthy people will have no obvious side effects from
ingesting the small amount of toxins in vitamin or mineral tablets. Over 7% of people, however, are sensitive to these chemicals. Allergic reactions can affect any organ system in the body
including the brain. This produces symptoms such as fatigue,
memory loss, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, and insomnia.

When purchasing supplements, consider delivery systems like
softgel capsules, naturally compressed tablets, and powders or
liquids that contain the fewest possible additives. A good multiple supplement will always tell what’s also not in their product
(especially wheat, dairy, yeast, eggs and other common allergens). Always read the entire label carefully before use.
What About Whole Food Supplements?
The science of nutrition has not yet discovered the complete range of vital nutrients found only in natural
foods. Live, whole food concentrates have the unique advantage of supplying the body with enzymes and
cancer-preventing phytochemicals like carotenoids, indoles, isothiocyanates, isoflavones, and phytosterols.
These substances do not exist in any vitamin or mineral supplement. Additionally, whole foods provide
vitamins, minerals, amino acids, polypeptide hormone precursors, and other nutrients that support the vital
life force needed by all cells for optimal health.
Examples of whole food supplements are as follows:
•Spirulina
• Nutritional yeast
• Wheat germ
• Chlorella
• Garlic
• Lecithin granules
• Blue green algae
• Desiccated liver
• Isoflavones from soy or kudzu
• Other green drinks or green

• Whole food concentrates of
cruciferous vegetables (broccoli,
cauliflower, Brussels sprouts,
etc.)
• Bee pollen
• Whole leaf aloe vera juice
• Various tissue concentrates like
pancreatin and raw adrenal
glandular concentrate
• All herbs
Given our present state of knowledge, adding one or more whole food supplements to a daily multiple
vitamin and mineral supplement is a beneficial way to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle.
A good multiple vitamin and mineral

be harmful in that accumulation of iron causes free radical oxidizing damage to numerous organs and is a
risk factor for heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
Men, especially as they age, may develop enlargement of their prostate gland. Herbs such as saw palmetto
can help maintain a healthy prostate from enlarging. So look for some saw palmetto in an ideal multiple

Not All Delivery Systems Are Created Alike
Choosing the right product can be a daunting task for dietary supplement consumers. When scouring store
shelves for the best options to help them achieve their goals, consumers wade through a sea of brands, an
endless array of ingredients and claims, and often choose one over the other because of packaging design.
But do they consider the product’s delivery system? If they don’t, they should. As with any other consideration, choosing a product with the right delivery system can make a difference. Powders, dry tablets,
chewable formats, and soft gelatin capsules are popular options for consumers to consider. They’ll also
need to consider the type of supplement they’re ingesting, timing or when best to take it, and even personal preferences like size and taste.
One of the most widely recognized formats is the tablet. Available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes,
and occasionally coated for easier swallowing, tablets are relatively inexpensive. And, unlike medicines,
since vitamins don’t need to be absorbed into the system quickly, a slower absorption rate may not be of a
concern to some consumers. However, multivitamins in a tablet form can be large and difficult to swallow,
and may require multiple tablets to be ingested at a time. Also consider that tablets are compressed forms
of a vitamin or formula and contain fillers to allow for compression and hardening.
may protect against UV radiation to provide ingredient stability, and may provide the potential to enhance nutrient absorption. Studies have shown that softgels can increase the rate of absorption and bioavailability. With the body having more of the vitamin to absorb, the dose amount during manufacturing
can be reduced and unlike two piece or hard-shell capsules which cannot hold liquid formulas, softgels
can contain a liquid to maintain nutritional value and other types of compounds. Since the nutrients in
a softgel are retained in an air-tight capsule, its tamperproof, it can be swallowed with no aftertaste, and
shelf life is longer.
With a host of benefits including ease-of-use and the potential to significantly increase nutrient availability, selecting a multivitamin supplement in a softgel makes the store shelves seem a little less intimidating. And that makes for a happy, healthy consumer.
Multivitamins Are Good For Your Health!
A recent clinical study investigating the effects of multivitamins on biological aging showed just that.1
The study, published in 2009, was the first to explore the relationship between multivitamin use and
telomere lengths. Investigators measured telomeres (DNA sequences found at the tip of a chromosome)
to see if they would be influenced by multivitamin intake.
As part of the normal process of cell division, telomeres shorten and limit the number of divisions a cell
can make. Eventually apoptosis occurs which is the
process by which telomeres are depleted and cells are
destroyed. Although apoptosis is a natural process of
aging, there are a variety of other means that can contribute to faster telomere shortening and accelerate the
aging process. Negative influencers include smoking,
obesity, nutritional deficiencies, and alcohol.
Another format you’re sure to have heard of or even tried is the chewable. Popular as a delivery format
for children and the elderly, many popular brands now provide the chewable option to help anyone who
simply dislikes swallowing pills or has difficulty doing so. The chewable is a seemingly suitable choice
for ease of consumption, but may contain added ingredients to sweeten the taste.
To examine whether a relationship existed between
multivitamin use and telomere lengths, 586 individual
subjects participated in the study where their multivitamin intake, nutrient intake and telomere lengths
were examined. The findings were statistically significant, and the idea of slowing the biological aging
process was exciting. Investigators found that telomere
lengths, on average, were 5.1 percent longer for daily
multivitamin users versus non users. They also noted
that a positive relationship existed between telomere
lengths and the intake of vitamins C and E from foods.
Significant research also points to the benefits of consuming omega-3 to help extend the life of telomeres.
Although some multivitamin products are available in a powdered formula, supplements of this type are
most often associated with fitness and bodybuilding. And since active ingredients need to be delivered
within a certain window of time to be properly absorbed, ingestion needs to take place before or after a
workout. Powders can sometimes contain numerous ingredients for added benefits beyond its intended
purpose, but efficacious amounts may be questionable and therefore unnecessary. The obvious drawbacks
of purchasing a powder are the size of the container (much larger than a tablet or softgel bottle), the lack
of convenience (mixing the powder with a liquid, usually water or juice), and the added ingredients intended to flavour and sweeten the formula.
The nutritional needs of men are significantly different from those of women.
This is because of hormonal, organ and
metabolic differences between the two
sexes.
Another important note is that multivitamin supplements designed for men will
rarely contain iron. This is because, unlike women, men do not lose iron through
menses every month.
The typical liquid supplement has also become an increasingly popular format for providing an immediate
boost or relief from certain types of pain. And, they’re relatively easy to consume – minus the refrigeration aspect. But there are challenges. Active ingredients can be bitter and displeasing to the tongue.
Men rarely, if ever, need iron in supplemental form. In fact, too much iron can
