The building makes ample use of alternative energy and eco-sustainable materials. The installation of solar and photovoltaic panels, capable of generating more than 54,560 kWh a year, for a total annual saving of 12.7 metric tons of fossil fuels, will cut consumption of conventional energy and reduce CO2 emissions. A further reduction in CO2 emissions will come from the geothermal plant, which exploits heat stored in the soil and subsoil. “The award given to i.lab recognizes the building’s excellent energy performance,” explained Lorenzo Pagliano, Director of the eERG research team at Milan Polytechnic’s Energy Department, the cornerstone of the GreenBuilding Program in Italy. “Italcementi’s Research Center will be in a position to cut its energy consumption levels by up to 60 per cent with respect to the current statutory requirement, thanks to the construction methods and materials used for the building and to the use of renewable energy sources. Another very interesting aspect is that i.lab is a low-energy and, equally, an artistic building featuring high-quality architectural elements.” i.lab will be coated with Italcementi Group’s TX Active® “smog-eating” cement, first used for the Jubilee Church in Rome, another Meier design, and today a material of choice for new buildings and countless urban projects on account of its proven depolluting and self-cleaning properties. The center will house more than a hundred Italcementi Group researchers and employees involved in the development of innovative construction materials. It will open in 2011. I I I I I I i .lab, Italcementi’s new Research & Innovation Center, has won the 2010 European GreenBuilding Award in the “Best New Building” category, as the most energy-efficient new building in Italy. The European GreenBuilding Award is part of the GreenBuilding Program, a project set up by the European Commission in 2004 to promote energy efficiency and implementation of renewable energy sources in non-residential buildings. R epresentatives from more than 50 banks, research institutes and brokerage firms attended the Italcementi Group Investor Event, the usual meeting with the international economic/financial community, held in Morocco last autumn. The two days of meetings were also an opportunity for Ciments du Maroc, the Group’s Moroccan subsidiary, to present its new Ait Baha cement plant. The facility will be one of the cement industry’s most efficient and eco-sustainable plants. In the beautiful setting of Agadir, Italcementi top management illustrated the Group’s medium/long-term growth guidelines, where innovative products will play an increasingly important role. Despite the continuing uncertainties of the economic climate, the Group confirmed its commitment to expanding its position in emerging countries and boosting the efficiency of its production system in industrialized nations. Given this industrial focus, with estimated investment flows of approximately 3 billion euro for the next five years and assuming operating cash flow in line with the past five years, the Italcementi Group intends to realign profitability with the significant margins reported in the period prior to the difficult world economic crisis, thanks to a stronger industrial organization and a more solid, better balanced country portfolio. The Group’s next steps will include the revamping of the Devnya cement plant in Bulgaria, where the introduction of Best Available Technologies will guarantee excellent industrial and environmental performance, with positive repercussions for economic margins. The new Devnya plant will raise its annual cement production capacity to approximately 3 million metric tons, becoming one of the Group’s most important facilities. Italcementi also announced an agreement in China’s Shaanxi province, where it already operates through the Fuping Cement subsidiary, to purchase an initial minority shareholding in the Shifeng Cement company, whose modern production line has an annual capacity of 2 million metric tons of cement. In the industrialized nations, one of the Group’s next moves will be in Italy, where authorization procedures for the revamping of the north Italian cement plants are underway. The growth guidelines confirm the Group’s close attention to cash flow management and measures to control the working capital requirement in order to guarantee a sustainable financial position in line with the standards for an “investment grade” rating. In this connection, during the meeting with the financial community, Italcementi announced that the Italcementi Finance subsidiary had signed an agreement with a pool of 16 international banks granting a five-year revolving credit facility for a total amount of 920 million euro. This transaction, which provides early refinancing of expiring credit lines including the Ciments Français syndicated line of credit (700 million euro to 2012), is an important new step in plans to tighten the organization of Group financial management, with Italcementi Finance acting as a centralized treasury unit. The new financing agreement has lengthened the average term of the backup lines not used by the banking system from 2.5 years to 4 years, thereby considerably strengthening the solidity of the Group’s liquidity reserves. The bookrunners in the club deal are Bank of America Securities, BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, Intesa Sanpaolo, Natixis, Société Générale CIB, The Royal Bank of Scotland and UniCredit Corporate Banking. T he purpose of the new cement plant in Ait Baha, Morocco, is to meet rapidly growing demand: over the past few years, cement consumption in the Agadir region has risen sharply, stimulated by a robust social building policy and infrastructure projects, accompanied by a revival of investment in tourism. The growth in demand will raise consumption from the current level of 350 kg/inhabitant to between 500 and 600 kg/inhabitant, the average level in the majority of Med Rim countries. The Agadir plant, which began operations in 1952, was the only cement facility in southern Morocco, and had saturated its production capacity. In view of the growth of the new local tourist industry, Ciments du Maroc (Italcementi Group) decided to boost production by relocating to a new plant and closing Agadir. The cement plant in Ait Baha, 50 km from Agadir, is scheduled to start work in 2011. Thanks to investments totaling more than 300 million euro, estimated annual production capacity will be 2.2 million metric tons of cement, substantially doubling current capacity. The plant relocation also offers the advantage of proximity to local reserves of raw materials—limestone and aluminosilicates—with sufficient supplies for more than a hundred years. Important upgrades will be made to the local roads to support the traffic generated by the cement plant. The quarried materials will be transferred to the plant on conveyor belts, thereby cutting road traffic between the plant and the quarry. Quarrying work will be practically invisible from the road and surrounding areas. The depth of the limestone formations will keep the breadth of land surface removal to a minimum, not more than 150 hectares after 50 years of work. The project places great attention on the architectural design and integration of the facility with the surrounding landscape. The challenge is to harmonize the site with the natural and cultural environment, compatibly with climatic conditions and local energy resources. A massive planting program has begun along the boundaries of the facility, together with creation of 310 hectares of parkland. Care has also been taken to ensure the visual integration of the cement plant from the main land and air observation points, given its proximity to the Agadir Al Massira airport. Consistently with the Italcementi Group commitment to lowering its environmental impact, a more sustainable production process will be a key factor in the success and efficiency of the Ait Baha project. Despite the difficult world economic situation, for the Italcementi Group the new Ciments du Maroc cement plant is a major investment in an emerging market and new confirmation of the Group focus on sustainability and compliance with industrial production requirements. In addition to issues relating to the production cycle, the most innovative element at Ait Baha will be the heat recovery and power generation system, which will ensure a significant reduction in the use of water for gas cooling and in indirect CO2 emissions. I I I I I I I nnovative design, urban redevelopment of an abandoned industrial area, quality workplaces, sustainable materials and technologies. This is the new Vodafone Village, an eco-technological complex being built in Milan’s Lorenteggio district to house the 3,000 employees who work in Vodafone offices in northern Italy. Three tower blocks, standing 60, 55 and 42 meters high, together with an auditorium for a surface area totaling 67,000 m2: work on the complex, whose structural design was handled by architects Rolando Gantes and Roberto Morisi from the P.R.P. firm, began in June 2008 and will be completed in December 2011. The interiors will be designed by the Dante O. Benini & Partners Architects firm. “Borgo Lorenteggio”, as it has been named, resembles a medieval village with the buildings gathered around a super-elevated square, a meeting place for the social growth of the community. Research into the concept of a “modern borough” provided the inspiration for the architects as they modeled the facades with elements curving around the complex in a spiral structure, while the interior is dominated by the sheer transparent frontage on the communal square. A distinctive feature is the cadenced rhythm of solid and space, where the spaces are spectacular, fully glazed sky-to-earth facades, and the solids echo the walls of an ancient borgo: forceful and compact, they nevertheless maintain a dialogue with the light, animated by the whiteness of their surfaces. Here, an essential element is the use of panels in white TX Active® cement, Italcementi’s patented photocatalytic product, whose active principle reacts with sunlight to keep the cement clean, helping to eliminate smog from the surface and preserve its white color. TX Active® combines the high plastic quality of cement with the chromatic elegance of white, underpinning and enhancing the formal softness and fluidity of these buildings, which repeat the elliptical shape of their groundplan in the facades. Facades that interweave in a kaleidoscope of light and shadow. The most important TX construction to date, an example of virtuous architecture and eco-compatible design, the Vodafone Village will also feature a “photovoltaic garden”, where the panels will be an integral architectural element. Solar energy will be used to generate auxiliary power, while the 27,000 m2 of glazing will illuminate the offices with full natural light and provide the specific energy-efficiency features to cut the energy requirement for air-conditioning in the summer. artVision Dans les règles de l’Art The rule of Art A ccueillir Pier Luigi Nervi dans la section d’arcVision consacrée à l’art se veut une manière de rendre hommage au génie d’un grand italien. I 96 n devoting the art section of arcVision to Pier Luigi Nervi, our intention is to pay tribute to the genius of a great Italian. Nervi’s brilliant merging of art and engineering was the foundation for his approach to architecture as a comparison and dialogue among different forms of expression, an aesthetic attention to detail and a futuristic use of contemporary technology. The figure who emerges is a complete and complex personality: a structural engineer, an architect, a builder, an entrepreneur, a consultant, a writer, a university lecturer. Engineer: “Static suggestions interpreted and defined through painstaking research and proportioning are the most effective sources of architectural inspiration. For me, this is an absolute rule and admits no exceptions.” Architect: “Form is more important than substance.” Builder: “In this age of revolutionary and disturbing transformations, it may be worthwhile to try and see whether a relationship exists between the construction technique and the architectural aesthetic, and whether it is possible to define that relationship.” Innovator, for example for the roof of the Italian Air Force hangars where he tried out prefabrication with reinforced concrete: “The best material man has ever invented.” Teacher: “Structural invention,” he told his students, “can only be a harmonious combination of personal inventive intuition and impersonal, realistic, inviolable static science.” Pier Luigi Nervi was all this, the inventor of reinforced concrete, a resistant and elastic innovative material he modeled into spectacularly bold buildings by applying his thorough scientific knowledge of construction techniques. Italcementi worked with Nervi on many of his projects, sharing his courage in experimentation, the diligence and honesty of his research and the rigor of his scientific method. Together with the Italcementi Research Center in Bergamo, Nervi conducted extensive analyses of cements in order to resolve construction difficulties and exploit in full the natural plasticity and ductility of cement by identifying the formulations offering the best mechanical performance and aesthetic qualities. So it was entirely appropriate that Italcementi should support Pier Luigi Nervi. L’Architettura come sfida (Architecture As A Challenge), a research project promoted by the family to celebrate the life and works of a great master of construction and, also, to achieve a better understanding of this polymath and his complex universe of culture and relationships. The project exhibition opened on June 4, 2010, at the CIVA—Centre International pour la Ville l’Architecture et le Paysage in Brussels, and can be seen in Italy in a huge collection at the MAXXI Museum in Rome from December 15, 2010, to March 20, 2011, later moving to Turin and other capital cities in Europe and America. In his long career, Nervi was active in at least six fundamental areas: engineering, designing, calculating, modeling, writing, teaching. The exhibition traces his work along each of these six different, yet complementary paths, examining 12 key projects as exemplary illustrations of an architectural corpus that is still a rich source of conceptual and design ideas and stimuli.
