Dear Stephane,
Cher Stephane,
I wanted to write to you with an official THANK
YOU. It was a wonderful tour, the boys haven't
stopped talking about it. It was a great
experience to come and visit Saint Maixent and
we received such generous hospitality from you,
from the Rugby Club and from so many others
who helped to make us feel welcome.
J'ai voulu t’écrire un MERCI officiel. Ce fut un
merveilleux voyage, les garçons n'ont pas arrêté
d'en parler. Ça a été une super expérience de
venir et visiter Saint Maixent car nous avons
reçu une hospitalité si généreuse de votre part,
de celle du Club de Rugby et de tous ceux qui
nous ont si bien accueilli.
The boys had a fantastic time : they still talk
about it before and after matches. They made a
lot of new friends and I thought that was such a
great part of what went on. The fact that
language difficulties were overcome in a spirit
of friendship. Clearly Rugby is an international
language.
Les garçons ont vécu des moments fantastiques
avant et après les matches : ils en parlent
toujours. Ils se sont fait beaucoup de nouveaux
amis et je pense que ça va durer. Le fait est que
les difficultés de langue ont été surmontées
grâce à l'amitié. Clairement le Rugby est un
langage international.
I cannot begin to list all those who helped to
make our stay so memorable and successful: but
the generosity of all those involved in helping
us stay in Saint Maixent and preparing all our
meals deserve our great thanks.
Je ne peux pas énumérer tous ceux qui nous ont
aidés dans notre séjour si mémorable et réussi :
mais la générosité de ceux qui se sont impliqués
pour ce séjour à Saint Maixent et la préparation
de nos repas mérite nos grands remerciements.
I do hope we can continue with our links now
Stephane. You are officially invited to Horsham
next year and I hope that we will be able to send
further teams to Saint Maixent in the future, to
keep the strong links between the two clubs.
J'espère vraiment que nos liens vont se
poursuivre Stéphane. Vous êtes officiellement
invités en Horsham l'année prochaine et j'espère
que nous pourrons envoyer de nouvelles équipes
à Saint Maixent dans l'avenir et conserver des
liens forts entre les deux clubs.

THE PALADIN TOUR OF HORSHAM COLTS :
SAINT-MAIXENT L’ECOLE 2014
Horsham Rugby Club Colts enjoyed a hugely
successful tour to Horsham’s twin town of Saint
Maixent L’Ecole in Western France and in the
process they re-established the strong bonds
between the two clubs. The Easter weekend tour
was extraordinary in two ways: for the quality of
Rugby on the pitch by the U17s and U18s of
Horsham, and the wonderful hospitality of our
hosts in Saint Maixent.
After an exhausting 21 hour journey by ferry and
coach, the 28 Colts were met in Saint Maixent by
representatives of the Rugby Club. That evening,
club officials laid on a meal for Horsham and their
opponents. It was the first meeting between the
teams who would do battle on the Sunday: but it
was marked by camaraderie and friendship, a
spirit which grew between the two teams over the
weekend.
The tour was organised to mark the links between
the two teams and the towns. It was made
possible for Horsham Colts by the generosity of
sponsor Paladin Capital, the Horsham based
Investment company. Chief Executive Sylvester
Vince-Odozi is a great supporter of the team,
which is producing some of the best young
players in Sussex Rugby.
On the Saturday morning, both teams were
invited to the Mairie to be formally welcomed by
the Mayor of Saint Maixent Leopold Moreau.
The Colts Captain Kyle Fairs responded in perfect
French, along with head coach John Riley. The
Colts also handed over a letter of goodwill they
had been given for the occasion by the Chairman
of Horsham District Council Cllr Philip Circus
and gifts from Horsham to Saint Maixent. The
boys were photographed together outside the
Mairie before Horsham went to take part in a
tournament with two local French sides.
Les joueurs du Horsham Rugby Club Colts ont
profité d'une tournée triomphale dans la ville
jumelle de Saint Maixent L'Ecole située dans
l’Ouest de la France. Ils ont ainsi rétabli les liens
forts entre les deux clubs. La visite de week-end de
Pâques a été extraordinaire pour deux raisons : la
qualité de rugby sur le terrain par les U17 et U18
de Horsham, et la merveilleuse hospitalité de nos
hôtes à Saint Maixent.
Après un voyage de 21 heures épuisant par le
ferry et l'entraîneur, les 28 Colts ont été réunis à
Saint Maixent par des représentants du club de
rugby. Ce soir-là, les responsables du club ont
proposés un repas pour Horsham et leurs
adversaires. C'était la première rencontre entre
les équipes qui combattraient le dimanche : mais
elle a été marquée par la camaraderie et de
l'amitié, un esprit qui a grandi entre les deux
équipes durant le week-end.
La tournée a été organisée pour tisser des liens
entre les deux équipes et les villes. Cela a été
rendu possible pour les « Horsham Colts » par la
générosité de Paladin Capital, société
d'investissement basée à Horsham. Le chef de la
direction, Sylvester Vince-Odozi est un grand
partisan de l'équipe, qui produit quelques-uns des
meilleurs jeunes joueurs de rugby de la province
du Sussex.
Le samedi matin, les deux équipes ont été invitées
à la mairie pour être officiellement accueillis par
le maire de Saint Maixent, Léopold Moreau. Le
capitaine des Colts, Kyle Fairs a répondu dans un
français parfait, avec l'entraîneur-chef John Riley.
Les Colts ont également remis une lettre qu'ils
avaient reçue pour l'occasion par le Président du
Conseil de District, Philip Circus et des cadeaux
de Horsham. Les garçons ont été photographiés
ensemble à l'extérieur de la mairie avant d’aller
prendre part au tournoi avec deux autres équipes
locales.
The first game on Saturday against Niort u19 was
very tough. The opposition were looking for a
decent warm up game before playing in the
French u19 National Cup final the following
weekend (which they won). As Horsham got to
grips with the French rules and a very powerful
opposition, they had to defend for most of the 1st
half. They eventually conceded two unconverted
tries to trail 10 0 at the break.
An opportunist Cameron Allan try (which he
converted) gave the tourists hope at 10 - 7.
However Niort scored again only for Jerry
Downeys power and pace to bring Horsham
another converted try. 15 -14. When Niort
pounced on a Horsham mistake in their own 22 to
take a 20 14 lead the game looked done.
However pressure at scrum in Niorts 22 saw
Michael Turner pounce for Horshams 3rd try.
Cameron Allan held his nerve to slot the
conversion and with the whistle blowing Horsham
had a famous victory. The St Maixent crowd
seemed as pleased as Horsham with the outcome !
The second game v Thours Parthenay was also
tough but Horsham showed their strength in depth
as the rest of the squad got a run out. The tourists
scored 4 tries without response through Ben
Birch, Ross Carter, Matthew Brock and Declan
Nwachukwu with prop Liam Brady coming on to
expertly slot the last conversion. 22 - 0.
Le premier match de samedi contre Niort a été
très difficile. L'opposition cherchait un
entrainement à la hauteur avant de jouer la finale
U19 le weekend suivant (qu’ils ont gagné)
.Comme Horsham réussi à maîtriser les règles
françaises et une opposition très puissante, les
joueurs ont dû défendre la majeure partie de la
1ère mi-temps. A la traine, ils ont finalement
concédé deux essais non convertis 10-0 à la
pause.
Un essai opportuniste de Cameron Allan (qui est
transformé) donne un espoir aux visiteurs 10 - 7.
Cependant Niort marque encore une fois un autre
essai mais la puissance et la vitesse de Jerry
Downeys donnent à Horsham un nouvel essai
converti. 15 -14. Niort profite d’une erreur dans
les 22 et prend une avance à 20-14. Le jeu
semblait plié. Cependant une nouvelle pression de
Horsham en mêlée a fait bondir Michael Turner
pour son 3ème essai. Cameron Allan retient son
souffle pour la transformation et délivre Horsham
sur le coup de sifflet final pour une fameuse
victoire. Le public de St Maixent semblait aussi
heureux que l’équipe du résultat !
Le deuxième match contre Thouars Parthenay
était également difficile, mais Horsham trouve les
ressources nécessaires et l'équipe fait une
démonstration. Les visiteurs ont marqué 4 essais
par Ben Birch, Ross Carter, Matthew Brock et
Declan Nwachukwu. Le pilier Liam Brady
transforme habilement la dernière tentative. 22-0.
After the tournament, the teams ate together and
exchanged gifts. On Saturday evening, Horsham
and Saint Maixent again joined up to enjoy a
sumptuous meal courtesy of our hosts. Rugby
proved itself an international language as the
players from both sides mingled and enjoyed a
great evening of fun and revelry.
On Sunday the big game awaited. The Horsham
players were greeted cordially to the Saint
Maixent’s magnificent stadium by Union Jacks
and `Swing Low Sweet Chariot` being played
over the PA system.
The teams ate lunch together and just before 3pm,
they took to the field side by side and stood bolt
upright for the pre-match ceremony in front of a
crowd of 400 people, all hoping to see a French
victory. One or two players were seen to wipe
away tears as the French and British National
anthems were played.
The extensive pre match lunch seemed to leave
Horsham a little sleepy at the start and they soon
found themselves 8 - 0 down to the hosts from St
Maixent. Captain Kyle "Le Tanc" Fairs soon
settled nerves by powering over for a converted
try. When scrum Josh Steggles darted over for two
opportunist converted tries, Horsham suddenly
had a 21 - 8 lead. Further tries from Liam
"mankini boy" Mcgivern, Declan Nwachukwu,
Ross Carter and Joey Walker pushed Horshams
try count to 7. In total Cam Allan converted 5 of
the tries but the best conversion came from Liam
"specialist kicking team" Brady. St Maixent got
another penalty giving a final score of 47 11.
The rugby was played in great spirit and Horsham
really showed their hosts what quality the possess.
The off the pitch activities complement the rugby
perfectly leading to arguably the best tour any of
us have been on."
Après le tournoi, les équipes ont mangé ensemble
et ont échangé des cadeaux. Le samedi soir,
Horsham et Saint Maixent à nouveau réunis ont
profité d'un repas somptueux avec toute la
courtoisie de nos hôtes. Le rugby s'est avéré une
langue internationale permettant aux joueurs des
deux côtés de profiter d'une grande soirée festive
et réjouissante.
Le dimanche, le grand moment tant attendu. Les
joueurs ont accueilli Horsham dans le magnifique
stade de Saint Maixent par l'Union Jack et `Swing
Low, Sweet Chariot` entonnés par la sono.
Les équipes ont déjeuné ensemble et juste avant
15 heures, ils se sont mis côte à côte, debout pour
la cérémonie d'avant-match devant une foule de
400 personnes, qui espérait voir une victoire
française. Un ou deux joueurs ont été surpris en
train d’essuyer des larmes causées par les hymnes
nationaux français et britannique alors joués.
Le déjeuner d’avant match semblait avoir laissé
Horsham un peu endormi et ils se trouvèrent
bientôt menés à 8 - 0 par leurs hôtes de St
Maixent. Le capitaine Kyle Salons, dit le "Le
TANK" inscrivait un essai transformé. Josh
Steggles s'élança à son tour pour réussir deux
essais transformés, Horsham rebondissait
soudainement à 21- 8. D'autres essais de Liam "le
garçon au bikini" Mcgivern, Declan Nwachukwu,
Ross et Joey Carter Walker propulsaient
Horshams à 7 essais. Au total Cam Allan
convertis 5 des essais, mais la meilleure
transformation est venue du pilier Liam Brady "
le botteur spécialiste". St Maixent s'est contenté
d’une ultime pénalité pour un score final de 4711.
Le rugby s’est joué dans un bon état d’esprit et
Horsham a montré à ses hôtes la qualité de leur
possession de balle.
La qualité des activités annexes au match nous
permet d’avancer que c’est la meilleure tournée
que nous avons eu.
In the evening, the two teams continued their after
match celebrations as Saint Maixent laid on a
wonderful meal and barbeque. Again the two
teams mixed and friendships were forged: the
teams had swapped jerseys and all proudly sported
opposition colours. The scene were
extraordinary: there were no longer two teams or
even two towns: there were a large group of
friends enjoying a marvellous night of food and
festivities.
The young Colts of Horsham represented
themselves, their club and their town with great
honour, pride and maturity. They earned the
respect and friendship of the players and officials
of Saint Maixent Rugby Club and the townsfolk.
The tour was an overwhelming success. Saint
Maixent were honoured to host the Colts and the
Colts loved every minute of their time in the
French town.
The links between the two clubs may have been
dormant for almost 20 years, but both are now
determined to build on this tour: Horsham Colts
have officially extended the invitation to Saint
Maixent to tour here next year, and we hope they
will be able to come. If so, they can expect a great
welcome and they will be the guests of Horsham’s
hospitality. The tour organisers would like to
thank sponsors Paladin Capital for their great
support in making this memorable tour reality.

"The rugby on the tour of St Maixent was fantastic
and of an extremely high level. Horsham won all 3
games, 2 on Saturday and one on Sunday and all
28 boys got some game time including the injured
Callum Murphy and prop Liam Brady who also
acted as back up goal kicker having 100% (2 out
of 2) record.”
Dans la soirée, les deux équipes ont continué la
fête autour d’un excellent repas et un barbecue. Là
encore, les deux équipes mélangées, des amitiés se
sont forgées : les équipes ont échangé des maillots
et les couleurs de l'adversaire ont été fièrement
arborées. La scène était extraordinaire : il n'y avait
plus deux équipes ou même deux villes, mais
grand groupe d'amis appréciant une soirée
merveilleuse et festive.
Les jeunes Colts de Horsham, leur club et leur
ville ont été représentés avec grand honneur, fierté
et maturité. Ils ont gagné le respect et l'amitié des
joueurs et des officiels du Saint Maixent Rugby
Club. La tournée a été un énorme succès. Saint
Maixent a été honoré d'accueillir les Colts et les
Colts ont adoré chaque minute de leur temps passé
dans la ville française.
Les liens entre les deux clubs ont peut-être été en
sommeil pendant près de 20 ans, mais les deux
sont maintenant déterminés à tirer parti de cette
tournée : les Horsham Colts ont officiellement
lancé l'invitation à Saint Maixent d’ici l'année
prochaine, et nous espérons qu'ils seront en
mesure de venir. Si c'est le cas, ils peuvent
s'attendre à un très bon accueil et savoureront
l'hospitalité d’Horsham. Les organisateurs de ce
voyage tiennent à remercier leur sponsor Paladin
Capital rendant réalisable et inoubliable cette
tournée.
