Grading Criteria: Participation and Classroom Work Homework and Compositions Quizzes Exams 25% 25% 25% 25% 25% Participation in the Target Language and Classroom Work: These are the most important components in the grading criteria. Students are expected to: Attend classes regularly. You are allowed 3 absences for any reason. An absence beyond the third, except for one excused by a doctor or WCHS attendance policy, may reduce your grade. You may also lose points for being late for class frequently. Participate frequently and actively in class activities. These activities include being prepared for class, speaking, asking questions and answering questions, and working in pairs and groups. You may lose points for not doing these activities. Use the target language (TL) in all class activities. Making mistakes in using the target language is a natural learning process, so be prepared to make mistakes and learn from them. The following are some of the criteria that will be used to evaluate the use of the TL in class: Responding to questions from the instructor in the TL. Speaking only in the TL during group work. Repeating correct answers when modeled by the instructor. Practicing correct pronunciation in class. Speaking to classmates informally using the TL in class. Asking questions of the instructor using the TL. Participating in oral drills in class using the TL. Using the TL vocabulary learned in each chapter. 25 % Homework and Compositions: Homework: Homework will be assigned and it is to be completed at the time it is due. Late assignments may be accepted for 50% credit. If you miss a class, the assignment will be due the day you return. 2 Compositions: There will be numerous compositions. Topics and guidelines will be discussed in class. The composition grade will be based on a rubric that considers four categories: Content, Organization, Language Use, and Mechanics. 25% Quizzes: In this course, there will be frequent quizzes based on materials covered in class. Quizzes may or may not be announced ahead of time, so it is important to keep up with your homework and other assignments. 25% Exams and Oral Presentation: Exams: There will be comprehensive exams following each chapter throughout the semester. They will be announced well in advance. You are required to complete a conversation at the end of each chapter before the start of the written exam. The conversation score is part of the exam score. Oral Presentation: You are required to do a 5-10 minute oral presentation during the semester. The date of the oral presentation will be announced in class. You must discuss the topic of your presentation with the instructor. Stay on track with assignments for the class. If you find yourself falling behind or not understanding class materials, or if you have any concern about your study, see me as soon as possible. If you have missed a quiz or exam because of an illness or other valid reason, contact me as soon as possible. You must meet with me to request a make-up within one week of the absence. It is not always possible to make up a quiz or exam missed because of absences. During a quiz or exam, there is a no-talking rule. You may only ask the instructor questions, not your classmates.
