Well, we heard Will.I.Am speak about 3D printers, but we wanted to know more. The Wall Street
Journal (reporter) Diana Jou (reports) on the revolutionary printer that can make everything from medical
equipment to clothing.
Imagine this: you need a flashlight. You go online, download a special file, send it to a desktop printer
and a real flashlight, fully assembled, materializes in a few hours.
So this torch has, basically, two materials, one of them is a white, rigid material, and a rubber material,
and the printer can assemble each part of this torch in one piece and it comes out of the printer fully
assembled. Later on we added batteries and electronics and you have an operating torch.
Known as 3D printing, the technology allows machines to print real-life objects. Everyone from fashion
designers to oral surgeons are using it. Here’s how it works: a designer creates an object using a 3D
drafting software, then sends it to the printer. The printer takes the data and creates ultra-thin slices of the
object, then builds it layer by layer.
The laser-sharp detailing can even print an intricate dress like this one, featured in Paris Fashion Week,
made by designer Iris Von Herpen.
Printing detailed medical models ahead of an operation means doctors are cutting down on surgery time.
We would be able to reduce our surgical time at least (by) a quarter. Now we can print the 3D model of
the patient and then we can present the metal plates, and then during the operation we just fit it onto the
jawbone of the patient. It makes the operation smoother and safer.
It’s a digital technology that allows printing into over a hundred and twenty different types of materials.
So anything that you can design, you can actually print. So you really, you’re only limited by your
imagination.
And your designs can come to life through online printing services, like Shapeways and Materialize.
I’m Diana Jou for the Wall Street Journal.
