2. RESEARCH
2.1
Research Topics
I have a wide range of research interests. My website provides a more detailed overview:
https://sites.google.com/site/thibaudboncourt/research
Sociology of science
Sociology and history of the social sciences; Political uses of sciences
(intellectual Cold War; sciences and European integration); Politicisation of
scientists; History and transnational flow of scientific ideas; Academic
careers; Higher educations policies; International scientific organisations.
Military Sociology
International mobility of military officers; International flow of military ideas
and practices; Regionalization of European defence and security policies.
Research Methods
Mixed methods; Qualitative methods (archives, biographical interviews,
repeated interviews, participant observation); Quantitative methods
(bibliometric studies); International comparisons (France – United Kingdom).
2.2.
Book Project
The winding road to international science. The development of political science after World War
II, book projet, Palgrave Macmillan (synopsis accepted, contract in progress).
How can we account for the sudden rise of previously marginal disciplines? What are the factors
behind the internationalisation of sciences? How do national specificities weaken to allow international
standards to emerge? How can we explain the transnational diffusion of scientific standards, methods
and paradigms? This book, drawn from my Ph.D. thesis, aims to answer these questions by
“unpacking” the process of scientific internationalisation. It focuses on the development of political
science after 1945 and uses material drawn from the archives of professional associations and
transnational organisations (UNESCO, philanthropic foundations, etc.), interviews, and bibliometric
studies of scientific journals.
My book shows that the internationalisation of political science has to be understood in relation to the
political context of the Cold War and post-Cold War periods: the dynamics of post-war reconstruction,
the tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union as well as the process of European
integration have all had direct consequences for the transnational development of the discipline.
Science policies, in this perspective, are a continuation of war (and peace) by other means. In
addition, my book argues that scientific internationalisation is also fuelled by specifically academic
dynamics: paradigm competitions and academic rivalries all act as incentives for the creation of
international associations and the development of transnational exchanges. Thus, this book aims to
shed an innovative light on both the development of the social sciences and the multifaceted impact of
post-war international politics, including the intellectual dimensions of the Cold War.
2.3.
Funded Research Projects
• “Marginal Academics. A Study of Scientific Socialisation in the United States.”
Type of project: Individual.
Status: Ongoing.
Funding: Central European University, Budapest (Junior Core Fellowship, 18,000 euro, offered in
February 2016); shortlisted in March 2016 for a Fulbright grant to fund fieldwork in the US.
Abstract: Science is a highly stratified social activity: its elite figures draw a wide range of resources
from their occupation, while others face a variety of difficulties, e.g. a less recognised status,
difficulties in getting access to grants and prestigious publication outlets, etc. This project seeks to
understand why many of the most marginal researchers cope with, and even consent to or

contribute to, these inequalities and the scientific standards that produce them. It hypothesises that
the socialisation of these scientists plays a key part in maintaining the scientific order. It will test this
hypothesis by collecting quantitative and qualitative data about the trajectories of American scientists
in four disciplines (political science, economics, engineering science, biology) using a questionnaire
and biographical interviews.
• INTERCO-SSH (“International Cooperation in the Social Sciences and Humanities:
Comparative Perspectives and Future Possibilities”)
Type of project: Collective (international consortium coordinated by Gisèle Sapiro, comprising seven
universities: Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris; Cambridge University; University
of Bologna; University of Graz; Erasmus University Rotterdam; Central European University,
Budapest; and the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina).
Status: Ongoing.
Funding: European Seventh Research Programme (FP7), 2,5 million from 2013 to 2017.
Role within the project: After taking part in the writing of the original grant proposal, I am now
employed as a postdoctoral researcher in the framework of the project.
Abstract: The Interco-SSH project compares the institutionalisation of seven academic disciplines
(anthropology, political science, economics, sociology, psychology, literature, and philosophy) in
Europe since 1945. Using quantitative and qualitative data, it studies three broad phenomena: the
institutionalisation of disciplines at the national level; the development of transnational scientific
structures (e.g. professional organisations, scientific journals) and the geographical mobility of
scholars; and the circulation of scientific paradigms, methods, and ideas between disciplines and
countries. As a member of the project, I deepened my understanding of the history of the social
sciences by comparing the results of my thesis (about the case of political science) with the
development of other disciplines (anthropology, economics, psychology, sociology). I notably
undertook a comparative study of European social science associations, in order to unveil the
scientific, academic, and political dynamics at work behind the internationalisation of disciplines. I
also undertook a study of the history of the European University Institute as an instrument of
European science policy, in order to further highlight the interplay between sciences and politics in
the development and transnational diffusion of knowledge. The results of INTERCO-SSH will be
published by Palgrave Macmillan in the form of three edited volumes, one of which coedited by
myself.
• SPEL (“Political Sociology of Elections”)
Type of project: Collective (researchers from CESSP – University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, and
IRISSO – University Paris Dauphine).
Status: Completed, funding application in progress for extension.
Funding: Application in progress (shortlisted in February 2016 by the French National Research
Agency – ANR).
Role within the project: Member.
Abstract: The SPEL project studies the evolution of the political preferences of French voters before,
during and after the campaign of the 2012 presidential and legislative elections. It used qualitative
data drawn from repeated in-depth interviews with a panel of voters of various social origins. In the
framework of this collective effort, I especially focused on the study of the political opinion and
behaviour of scientists from four disciplines (biology, mathematics, literature, management). The
results of the project are compiled in a collective volume published by Rennes University Press. A
funding application is in progress for a similar study of the 2017 elections using more diverse
methods (questionnaires, repeated interviews, direct observations).
• “The Internationalisation of Military Officers. Contribution to the Sociology of Elite
(re)Production.”
Type of project: Individual.
Status: on hold.
Funding: European University Institute (12 month Max Weber Fellowship in 2013-2014, 24,000
euro).

Abstract: After my thesis, I have pursued my interest in the internationalisation of professions by
looking at the way in which the development of international security settings (linked to NATO and,
in Europe, to the Common Security and Defence Policy) leads to an increasing internationalisation
of military careers. Using in-depth biographical interviews with French military officers, I showed
how internationalisation changes military socialisation and the production of military elites. Some of
these results are presented in a paper published by Cooperation and Conflict. Provided further funding
is obtained, the study could be extended to other national cases (Germany, United Kingdom).
