Le magazine Oral Health, qui en
est à sa 100e année de publication, a
reçu dernièrement « le Prix Distinction » de la part des anciens élèves
de l’Université de Toronto pour son
soutien continu de la communauté
dentaire canadienne. En discutant
avec plusieurs collègues lors de la
présentation, nos réflexions étaient
concentrées sur les changements
de la profession et comment ces
changements rendent la pratique de
l’orthodontie stimulante.
L’augmentation continuelle des
frais d’exploitation, les attentes
des patients plus élevées et parfois
déraisonnables, ainsi que les litiges
contre les orthodontistes comptaient
parmi les préoccupations. La conclusion de plusieurs est que « l’Âge
d’Or » de l’orthodontie est passé.
Même si je partage ces inquiétudes,
il y a moyen d’être optimiste à propos de notre avenir et d’être motivé
avec ce que les pratiques contemporaines offrent aux patients pour
améliorer leur santé buccale. Laissez-moi vous expliquer pourquoi.

La satisfaction d’un patient en

qualité de son expérience que de

of publication, recently received a
2011 “Awards of Distinction” from
the University of Toronto Alumni
Association for consistent support of
the Canadian dental community. In
speaking with many of my colleagues
at the event, reflections focused on
how the profession has changed and
how many of those changes have
made orthodontic practice more
challenging.
Ever-increasing operating costs,
increased and sometimes-unreasonable patient expectations, and litigations against orthodontists were
some of the common concerns. Many
conclude that the “golden age” of
orthodontics has passed. While I
agree with the concerns, there is reason to be optimistic about our future
and excited about what contemporary practice has to offer our patients
in improving their oral health. Let
me try to explain why.
We are better prepared to
understand factors that contribute to patient satisfaction and
dissatisfaction. Patient satisfaction
with orthodontic treatment depends
as much on the “quality of the patient
experience” or on psychological factors, as on the orthodontist’s perception of the “quality of the treatment
result.”
Focusing on the patient’s perception of what matters during treatment has been shown to increase
both patient and parent satisfaction
with outcomes.
Armed with modern technologies, orthodontists are better able

“Sealed surfaces and surfaces finished solely by a matrix were approximately 10 times less rough than after
other finishing procedures. … The
sealer failed to cover the whole composite surface. The unfinished and
sealed surfaces lost their shine three
to seven days after placement in the
mouth.”*
Directa’s CoForm matrix system is
a unique set of preformed transparent
matrixes, made of celluloid plastic,
specifically designed to deal with composite restorations around difficult
incisal edges and tooth fractures. The

matrices conform easily to the patient’s
dentition to provide a natural-looking
restoration. They are applied over the
cavity after etching and bonding with
a slight movement to avoid air bubbles. When securely in place, excessive
composite material should be removed.
A prime benefit of utilising CoForm
is that the device aids pressure to
force composite material into cavities
and etched tubes. There is little waste
involved when using CoForm, compared with using disposable matrices.
Light curing is carried out through
the transparent surface of the CoForm
matrix.
CoForm’s convenient ready-cut
mesial and distal corners do not
adhere to composite, so they are very
easy to remove without causing any
drag after the restoration has been

A panel of dental technology
experts assembled by Pride Institute,
a dental-practice-management consulting firm, selected the winning
products through an unbiased, rigorous assessment process. The winning
technologies were selected by majority vote in four categories: foundational, diagnostic, therapeutic and
emerging.
“We are confident that our new
digital imaging features will change
the way dentists capture and store
X-ray, intraoral and panographic
images,” Curve Dental CEO Jim Pack

many, and patients are getting better
educated when it comes to spending
their hard earned money on costly
procedures like dental implants. It
seems the biggest barrier to treatment
is financial when it comes to offering patients implants, and patients
are calling around looking for price
comparisons. One of the biggest misconceptions in the dental industry is,
if something costs less, then there is
a compromise; and it’s definitely not
something you’d want to put in your
patient’s mouth. Patients seem to be
taking a more proactive approach in
learning about the different treatment
modalities, materials and costs.
