Personal introductory remark: My University sports carrier – from a student volunteer in junior
leadership responsibilities to a professional CEO of a FISU World Championship 2012 – is an
example for the learning and personal developing chances.
The presentation will show up some of the most important points of the organizing process as well as
a personal view and evaluation of the position as director of the World University Equestrian
Championship (WUEC) 2012. In all areas of the organization there are special challenges for the
managers. A design of all working areas will be outlined and some basic information on budgetary
planning and management will be exposed. The presentation will show some negotiation on local,
regional, national and international level in different parts of the organization of the WUEC. The fields of
the competition itself will be specified with a view on the Do’s and Don’ts in different resorts of the
WUEC.
The 10th WUEC was hosted by the German University Sports Federation (adh) and RWTH Aachen
University Sports Department (USD) in the city of Aachen. The championship was organized at a high
professional level: The hosts, adh and USD were supported by the National Student Equestrian Federation
(DAR), the National Equestrian Federation (FN) and several student riding teams from Aachen, Cologne,
Bonn and Düsseldorf. Important event partners were the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of
Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sports of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as well as the
Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein e. V. (ALRV). ALRV is hosting every year the famous International
Equestrian Festival in Aachen, the CHIO. Aachen within the heart of Europe is a young, dynamic and
lovely region with much history as well as tradition that is worth discovering. Such an efficient network
was the key for a successful event. On the other hand it was a challenge to keep it ticking over and to
guarantee the information flow in between all parties. The leadership roles on all levels were an important
part of a good network and a successful organization and will be explained exemplarily within the
presentation.
More than 200 participants from 26 nations participated at the WUEC from August 22 nd to August
26 . Participants found ideal competition conditions on the venue. The Deutsche Bank Stadium offered
4.300 roofed seats and provided an impressive setting and perfect parameter for riders, horse and
international equestrian championships.

Besides the competition there was an attractive cultural supportive program for visitors, participants
and guests. Special events such as "Aachen Night", “Riders Night” or the “Riders’ Ball” were involved in
order to support inter cultural communication for the participants, volunteers, staff and guests and to get
to know the European culture of Aachen and to socialize. Regarding the cultural program and also the
competition itself the Organizing Committee had to deal with different political and cultural issues.
The WUEC promised international flair and a diverse cultural program. For the whole event more
than 150 volunteers were in charge to arrange all different tasks in order to provide a special event for
participants and guests as well. The presentation will outline the communication to volunteers before and
during the event and identify university sport events as a qualification field for students while learning
soft, life and working skills. My understanding about developing competences through university sport
events is to increase communication capacities, to develop the ability to lead, to take over responsibility,
to increase self-confidence, to learn problem orientated working and to increase organizing capacities.

To host the WUEC 2012 in Aachen was a big challenge and a great pleasure at the same time. On one
hand it was a big challenge to achieve the expectations of all participants and guests and to reach a great
atmosphere on this spacious venue. On the other hand it was a big challenge to balance the FISU
regulations, high professional management and to hand over responsibility to volunteers. All stakeholders
were expecting a well performed international event. From my personal view the WUEC was the most
exciting event to develop my own personal skills and competences and I can recommend it as a personal
experience for life.

Remarque personnelle en guise d’introduction: Ma carrière dans le sport universitaire – de
l’étudiante-volontaire assumant des responsabilités juniors de direction à la directrice générale
professionnelle d’un Championnat du monde de la FISU en 2012 – illustre les opportunités qui
existent en termes d’apprentissage et de développement personnel.
Cette présentation fera ressortir les points essentiels du processus d’organisation, ainsi que la vision
personnelle et l’évaluation de la fonction de directrice du Championnat du Monde Universitaire 2012
d’équitation (WUEC). Il existe, dans tous les domaines de l’organisation, des défis spéciaux pour les
managers. La structure de tous les domaines de travail ainsi que des informations de base concernant la
planification et la gestion budgétaires seront exposées. La présentation donnera des exemples de
négociation au niveau local, régional, national et international, dans les différentes parties de
l’organisation du WUEC. Les domaines touchant à la compétition en elle-même seront traités par la
description des choses à faire et à ne pas faire aux différents niveaux du WUEC.
Ce 10e WUEC était accueilli dans la ville d’Aix-la-Chapelle par la Fédération allemande du sport
universitaire (adh) et le RWTH Aachen University Sports Department (USD). Le championnat a atteint
un niveau hautement professionnel : les hôtes, adh et USD, avaient reçu le soutien de la Fédération
nationale étudiante d’équitation (DAR), la Fédération nationale d’équitation (FN) et plusieurs équipes
étudiantes de cavaliers d’Aix-la-Chapelle, de Cologne, de Bonn et de Düsseldorf. Parmi les principaux
partenaires de l’événement, il y avait le ministère fédéral de l’Intérieur, le ministère de la Famille, de
l’Enfance, de la Jeunesse, de la Culture et des Sport de l’état de Rhénanie-du-Nord – Westphalie, ainsi
que l’Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein e. V. (ALRV). L’ALRV accueille chaque année à Aix-laChapelle le célèbre Festival international d’équitation, le CHIO. Située au cœur de l’Europe, Aix-laChapelle se trouve dans une jolie région jeune et dynamique, remplie d’histoire et de tradition, qui vaut le
détour. La clé du succès de l’événement a résidé dans ce réseau très efficace. D’autre part, parvenir à faire
fonctionner l’ensemble en garantissant un flux d’informations entre les différents intervenants s’est avéré
un véritable défi. Les fonctions de direction à tous les niveaux, lesquelles ont constitué une part
importante de ce réseau efficace et de la réussite de l’organisation, seront détaillées à titre d’exemple au
cours de cette présentation.
Du 22 au 26 août, le WUEC a attiré plus de 200 participants de 26 pays qui ont trouvé des conditions
de compétition idéales. Fort de 4 300 places assises couvertes, le Deutsche Bank Stadium offrait un cadre
impressionnant et des caractéristiques parfaites pour les cavaliers, les chevaux et les Championnats
internationaux d’équitation.
Parallèlement à la compétition, les visiteurs, les participants et les invités se sont vu proposer un
programme culturel intéressant. Des événements spéciaux tels que les « Aachen Night », « Riders Night »
ou encore « Riders’ Ball » ont été organisés afin d’assurer une communication interculturelle entre
participants, volontaires, membres du personnel et invités, tout en leur permettant de découvrir la culture
européenne d’Aix-la-Chapelle et de tisser des liens entre eux. La conduite de ce programme culturel ainsi
que des compétitions a exigé du Comité d’organisation de régler un certain nombre de questions d’ordre
politique et culturel.
Le WUEC a rempli sa promesse de cachet international et d’un programme culturel diversifié. En
tout, plus de 150 volontaires ont contribué aux différentes tâches, afin d’offrir aux participants et aux
invités un événement unique. La présentation exposera la communication mise en place pour les
volontaires avant et pendant l’événement et elle identifiera les manifestations sportives universitaires qui
servent de terrain de qualification aux étudiants en leur permettant d’acquérir des compétences générales
applicables à leur vie personnelle et professionnelle. Ma perception du développement des compétences à
travers les événements sportifs universitaires s’appuie sur l’augmentation des capacités de
communication, le développement de l’aptitude à diriger, la prise de responsabilité, le renforcement de la
confiance en soi, l’apprentissage de la gestion des problèmes dans le travail et l’augmentation des
capacités d’organisation.
Les volontaires doivent faire face à de nombreux défis en ce qui concerne l’action opérationnelle dans
les domaines suivants de la gestion événementielle :

Cérémonie de remise des médailles
Cela aura été certes un grand défi, mais également un grand plaisir d’accueillir le WUEC 2012 à Aixla-Chapelle. Un grand défi d’un côté, pour satisfaire les attentes de tous les participants et invités, et pour
assurer une excellente ambiance sur ce grand site de compétition. Un grand défi aussi pour parvenir à un
équilibre entre les règlements de la FISU et une gestion professionnelle élevée, et pour déléguer des
responsabilités aux volontaires. Tous les partenaires attendaient une manifestation internationale bien
menée. De mon point de vue personnel, ce WUEC aura été l’événement le plus passionnant qui m’ait
permis de développer mes compétences et qualités personnelles. Je le recommande vivement comme une
expérience personnelle de vie.
