The status of Pseudolabrus psittaculus (Richardson)
and use of the name Pseudolabrus rubicundus (Macleay)
for this species

ABSTRACT. - In an annotated checklist of the family Labridae, Parenti and Randall (2000) noted that Pseudolabrus psittaculus (Richardson, 1840), described from Tasmania, is preoccupied by Labrus psittaculus Lacepède, 1801 [=Halichoeres
bivittatus (Bloch 1791)], a Caribbean species, and proposed the next available name, Labrichthys rubicunda Macleay,
1881, be used for this species. Based on its purported type-locality, and in the absence of the type-specimen, Pseudolabrus
rubicundus was rejected as a nomen dubium by Allen et al. (2006) who instead referred P. psittaculus to another junior synonym, Labrichthys mortoni Johnston, 1885. Rediscovery of the type-specimen of Labrichthys rubicunda Macleay, however, confirms the conspecificity of this species with Labrus psittaculus Richardson, and the original collection information
shows Tasmania, rather than Western Australia, is the actual type-locality. We therefore resurrect Pseudolabrus rubicundus
as the next available name for the preoccupied P. psittaculus.
RÉSUMÉ. - Statut de Pseudolabrus psittaculus (Richardson) et utilisation du nom Pseudolabrus rubicundus (Macleay)
pour cette espèce.
Dans une liste annotée de la famille des Labridae, Parenti et Randall (2000) ont fait remarquer que Pseudolabrus
psittaculus (Richardson, 1840), décrit de Tasmanie, est déjà utilisé par Labrus psittaculus Lacepède, 1801 [= Halichoeres bivittatus (Bloch, 1791)], une espèce des Caraïbes, et ont proposé d’utiliser le prochain nom disponible, Labrichthys
rubicunda Macleay, 1881 pour cette espèce. Fondé sur la localité-type prétendue et en absence du spécimen-type, Pseudolabrus rubicundus a été rejeté comme nomen dubium par Allen et al. (2006) qui ont plutôt préféré P. psittaculus à un
autre synonyme junior, Labrichthys mortoni Johnston, 1885. La redécouverte du spécimen type de Labrichthys rubicunda
Macleay, toutefois, confirme la conspécificité de cette espèce avec Labrus psittaculus Richardson, et l’information de la
collection originale montre que la Tasmanie, plutôt que l’Australie-occidentale, est la localité-type actuelle. Nous avons
donc ressuscité Pseudolabrus rubicundus comme le prochain nom disponible pour le P. psittaculus déjà utilisé.
