Presentation
At the invitation of Annie Bozzini as part of the Association des CDC, Ana Pi, Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud have created a performance
and educational experience centred on urban dance.
This didactic performance project is about expanding our perception of urban dance by outsmarting the reductive equivalence between urban dance
and hip hop. On a subjective journey to ten cities around the world, the project evokes the immense variety of dances that are being created, practised
and demonstrated on the streets of the world’s major cities. Without claiming to be exhaustive, this danced lecture gives an overview of a selection of
urban dances: Krump in Los Angeles, Dancehall in Kingston, Pantsula in Johannesburg and Voguing in New York... This project evokes the
geographical, social and cultural contexts connected to each of these dances and their specific characteristics in terms of movement, body posture,
modes of practice (battle, nightclub, team etc...) as well as the styles music and clothing associated with them.
This world tour takes the form of a danced lecture performed by Ana Pi, a wonderful dancer seen in Dub Love last year. A selection of videos and
photographs illustrating each style is projected along with a commentary. Through changes of costumes, factual explanations, incarnations and
danced moments, Ana Pi evokes the complexity of these urban dances with enthusiasm, empathy and simplicity.
