It began as a Associate Members / Membres associés transition year. I stepped into the Acting Executive Director role on a voluntary basis. With the limited time I had to devote to this role, I wondered about how we would be able to deliver on the value proposition to our members. But we did. Brockville Family & Children’s Services of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Cobourg Northumberland Community Counselling Centre Deep River North Renfrew Family Services Inc. Our Conjoint Counselling Pilot is reaching its benchmarks. We are sitting down with top level bureaucrats and Cabinet ministers to discuss important files of common interest. We are communicating with our members more often and are bringing members together on issues that matter most to them. In December, we implemented a newsletter, with three issues to date. Our board has met more frequently this past year to design tomorrow’s FSO. This includes work on our bylaws, board policy and governance model. Fort Frances Riverside Community Counselling Services Mike McDerment, the founder of Freshbooks, tells the story about how the three founders of his company arrived at an agreement for a buyout. Freshbooks, a growing software company is now potentially valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The three partners sat in a restaurant and each wrote on a piece of paper what they thought their share of the company was worth. When they passed their papers around the table, the numbers did not match. Sharing this story at the Great Place to Work conference in April, Mike said the resolution to the differing numbers was easy. They split the difference and moved on. Summing up this story, Mike said, “When you surround yourself with great people, hard things become easy.” I have had the immense fortune to work with great people at Family Service Ontario this past year. Surrounded by them, “hard things became easy.” Each of our board members stepped forward to assist with the challenges listed above. I can’t begin to list all the extra efforts put forward by Shelley McCarthy, Lynne Lamontagne, Brad Davis, Sharon Mayne Devine, Bob Campbell, Lynne Dupuis, Lori Golab, Natalie Parnell and also Connie McLeod who generously continued with the board in a voluntary consulting role. We also benefited from tremendous contributions of time and expertise from members who stepped forward to help on many occasions. These are people who put aside their many commitments at their home agencies in order to help their association. Haldimand-Norfolk Haldimand-Norfolk R.E.A.C.H. We developed an RFP process to identify the three pilot sites for the Conjoint Counselling Pilot. So many agencies applied that we had a very difficult job selecting. We needed to work through the issues that come with starting up such a complex project. Our work advocating for an improved PAR program was very challenging. We needed to ensure that our voice was heard and that it was balanced and respectful. We have had to work very hard with our peers and funders in the broader Violence Against Women 2 Family Service Ontario | Annual Report 2015 Family Service Ontario | Annual Report 2015 11 Family Service Ontario Member Agencies Agences membres de Services à la FamilleOntario 2015–2016 Principal Members / Membres principaux Barrie Catholic Family Services of Simcoe County Brantford Family Counselling Centre of Brant, Inc. Planning a high quality annual conference is an immense task requiring months of hard work. Our accomplishments would never have happened this past year without the extra-ordinary work of our paid staff. Klodia Guma has proven her effectiveness over and over again. She helped to catch all the details that needed attention. She has provided essential support in the Conjoint Counselling Pilot project, the Conference Planning committee, the Government Relations committee and the Communications committee to name a few. Klodia has found cost savings through the transition and has gone over and above her duties many, many times. I cannot say enough about Susan MacIsaac. In 2016, Susan moved naturally into the Acting Executive Director Role since she was already providing stellar leadership in the government relations and member engagement files, our most important activities. Susan’s transition to the Executive Position was so natural since she brings the passion, vision and energy at the executive level of operations. When I sit with Susan in the presence of our Deputy Ministers, Assistant Deputy Ministers and senior bureaucrats, I find myself marvelling at how fortunate we are to have such sophisticated and effective relationships with people in power. Often I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about some new opportunity or possibility. I blame Susan for that. She inspires me. We also have a long way to go to get where we want to be. We are only part way through our transition. We need to improve our on line presence, including our website. We have a number of agencies in Ontario who need to join our network. There are huge gaps in services that fall within our mandates. Our government is struggling to fill gaps in mental health, addictions and trauma services that we are uniquely qualified to fill. We are only part way there. It has been an amazing year at Family Service Ontario. I have to say that working with so many gifted and dedicated professionals, it has been one of the most fulfilling in my career. I appreciate the trust and confidence that our board and members gave to me to lead this transition in 2015. I can say with confidence that our most promising years are ahead of us.
