Formation of follicle cavities by testosteron in the ovaries of rats with
104 When infantile rats are treated during two days with plac. gonadotrophine. af ter which the hypophysis is removed and. af ter a three days' interval plac. gon. is administered again, corpora lutea sometimes develop af ter the latter treatment. They originate fr om large, slightly degenerated follicles. Oestrogenic suhstance is probably formed ·in th is process. Hence development of corpo~a lutea and production of oestrone may be caused autonomously by plac. gonadotrophine, if the anatomical con ~ ditions are fulfilled . In the hypophysectomized rat oestron production is possible not only af ter, but also before the development of corpora lutea. Physiologie. Physiology. - GAARENSTROOM, J. H., S. E. DE JONGH and F. J. A. PAESI: Formation of follicle cavities by testosteron in the ovaries of rats with and without hypophysis. p. 71. 1. High doses of testosteron cause the format ion of very large folli~ des with cavities of normal structure in the ovary of the infantile rat ; shortly before puberty corpora Iutea are being formed as weil. 2. These cystous follicles are typical of testosteron, they do not occur af ter treatment with an oestrogenic substance, even if applicated in luteinizing doses. 3. They also occur when testosteron is given together with an oestrogen, so under conditions in which abnormally formeel cavities develop in the hypophysectomized animal (necrosis of the ovule, disintegration of the granulosa) . 105 4. The epithelium factor of the pituitary gonadotropic complex is responsible for the normal character of the cavities in the follicles of rats treated with testosteron. 5. The oestrogenic and androgenic substances are of importance for the normal follicle ripening. Physiologie. - GAARENSTROOM, J . Physiology. - KRET, A. and S. E. DE JONGH: Thyroid hormone and . splanchnomegalia, p. 78. 1. Application of thyl'oid gland powder does not cause more rapid loss of weight in newly hypophysectomized rats, than is the otherwise case. 2. Their livers and kidneys remain relatively heavier than in control specimens, this is not the case with their mm gastrocnemii. 3. Neither the percentage of ,d ry matter, nor that of protein nitrogen of these organs was appreciably different fr om that in the con trol specimens. So the composition of the organs remained normal. 4. Independent of the 9rowth hormone of the hypophysis, thyroid hormone has a stimulating effect on the weight of some intestines. Physiologie.
