T. Shirt History
John Wesley Hanes was the first person to manufacture T-shirts in 1901, in North
Carolina. He was inspired by a shirt that black cotton workers wore. He called it a Tshirt because it has the form of a “T”. T-shirts became very popular in the U.S.A , as
underwear at first. The army bought them and when American soldiers, or G.I.s, went
to the Second World War, T-shirts were part of their uniform. Civilians in many
countries loved them, so the G.I.s gave them away. Then two teenage film stars,
Marlon Brando and James Dean, made them very famous.
