LET’S GO CRAZY
Brits on holiday
By Tara Homes
In Cyprus for Today in English
EVERY SUMMER, THOUSANDS OF YOUNG BRITS HOLIDAY IN THE PARTY
TOWN OF AYIA NAPA, CYPRUS. FOR THEM, IT’S A PARADISE OF DRINK, DRUGS
AND SEX. FOR OTHERS, IT’S A LIVING NIGHTMARE…
Yet the British love affair with the island
goes further than that. For the older
generation, Cyprus is an ideal destination
for people wanting to buy a home for their
retirement*, or spend the winter in the
sun. The cost of living is lower than in the
UK and property is cheap. And although
Greek is the national language, English is
widely* spoken and people drive on the
left as in Britain. Even the plug* sockets
and light* switches are the same.
By day, the streets are full of bronzed
Rollerbladers distributing cards and
leaflets* about that night’s activities in the
clubs.
Down on the beach, young women in
minuscule bikinis lie* roasting* in the
sun, while boys in Union Jack shorts
sleep* off the alcoholic effects of the
night before. The music blares* and
strong English accents boom.
NEON LIGHTS, PUBS AND CLUBS…
AYIA NAPA COMES TO LIVE
A few hours later, these daytime activities
will give way to an evening of drunken*
debauchery under the glare* of the
flashing neon lights from the pubs and
clubs squeezed* together like sardines
along the main street.
This is Ayia Napa on the eastern side of
the Mediterranean holiday island of
Cyprus. In recent years, tourism has
transformed this once small, quiet fishing
village into a throbbing* night spot, where
thousands of British men and women,
aged between 18 and 25, flock during the
summer months.
If you are not a fan of this club culture,
Napa is probably one of the worst places
to be on Eearth. British magazine Holiday
Which recently listed the resort* as one of
the top ten holiday “notspots” – places not
to go to. But for these young Brits, it is a
paradise of drugs, drink and sex.
The island’s residents, including those not
originally from Cyprus, are not happy.
Christine Venizelou, a businesswoman
who moved to Cyprus from the UK ten
years ago doesn’t mince* her word: “As
an ex-pat, I’m really embarrassed to say I
originate from Britain when locals*
complain about the drunken, disco mania
in Ayia Napa. As a nation, the British are
really badly* behaved when we’re drunk”.
JUST LIKE HOME: CYPRUS IS A
SUNNIER, CHEAPER VERSION OF
BRITAIN
In short, the British come here not to find
Greece but to enjoy a sunny version of
home. There are Marks & Spencer’s and
Woolworth’s shops, and lots of English
pubs. The cafés advertise English
breakfasts and English fish’n’chips, and
for those (and there are many) who like to
drink, brandy costs just three euros a
bottle – a fraction of the price in England.
And for those Brits who can’t live without
their daily ration of tabloid news, The Sun
and virtually every other English
newspaper are here too.
The one thing Ayia Napa doesn’t have is
Greek culture. But for the moment, this
doesn’t seem to worry the island’s
authorities. Tourism brings money, and
that is all that matters.
And for the young Brits lying on the
beach this summer, culture is the least of
their interests … ▄
With an average* of 340 days of sunshine
a year, and a tan* practically guaranteed,
it isn’t difficult to see why Cyprus is so
popular with young Brits.
