Introduction
AIBO Messenger is the software designed exclusively for “AIBO” and allows you
to have AIBO read aloud E-mail messages and Web pages.
Manual organization
The manual for AIBO Messenger consists of two parts:
Setup Guide (this book)
This manual provides information on installing AIBO Messenger, system
requirements and setting up a wireless LAN.
If you are using AIBO Messenger for the first time, be sure to read this Setup
Guide first.
User’s Guide
This manual describes how to use “AIBO Messenger” and how to set it up.

System requirements
You need the following equipment to use AIBO Messenger:
A wireless LAN environment
Your AIBO and personal computer (PC) need to be equipped as follows.
On AIBO
AIBO Wireless LAN Card ERA-201D1
For instructions on installing this card in “AIBO” ERS-210, refer to the AIBO
Wireless LAN Card ERA-201D1 Operating Instructions.
On the PC
You need either of the following:
• Be equipped with an IEEE802.11b-combaptible wireless LAN card*
• Be connected via a LAN to an IEEE802.11b-compatible wireless LAN access
point*
* Please use products that are recommended by Sony.

Installing AIBO Messenger
Install AIBO Messenger onto the hard disk from the supplied CD-ROM.

Turn on your PC and start up Windows.
Notes
• Quit all other programs before setting up this software.
• When you install this software under Windows 2000 Professional, log on as an
administrator or as an Administrators Group member.

Insert the supplied CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
The setup program starts up automatically.
If the setup program does not start, double-click “Setup.exe” file on the
CD-ROM.
The dialog box for installation appears on the screen.

Click Next.
The User Information dialog box appears.

Type your name in the User name box and the product key code in the
Key code box, and then click Next.
The key code is printed on the supplied key code sticker.
Attach this key code sticker to the CD-ROM case so as not to lose it.

Specify the installation destination, and then click Next.
Normally, this software is installed to the “C:\Program Files\Sony\AIBO
Messenger” folder by default.
To install this software to a different folder, click Browse and select a folder of your
choice.
When you click Next, the Choose Destination Location dialog box appears on the
screen.

Choose the folder where you want to add the program icon, and then
click Next.
Normally, the program icon is added to the “AIBO Messenger” folder. If you
prefer, you can select a different folder from the Existing Folders list or type a new
folder name in the Program Folders box.
The installation process begins.
When installation finishes, the InstallShield Wizard Complete dialog box appears.

Click Finish.
This concludes the installation. Next, move on to setting up a wireless LAN (page
15).

Uninstalling AIBO Messenger
Note
If you want to uninstall AIBO Messenger under Windows 2000 Professional, log
on as an administrator or an Administrators Group member.

Click the Start button on the task bar, and click Settings, then Control
Panel.

Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

Select AIBO Messenger and click the Add/Remove (Change/Remove
under Windows 2000 Professional) button.
Setting up a wireless LAN
AIBO Messenger lets you control a single AIBO from your PC over a wireless
LAN.
Connecting AIBO to a wireless LAN

Change the network settings on the PC (or access point) so that they
can be appropriate for the default settings on the AIBO Wireless LAN
Card.
For instructions on changing the network settings, refer to the instruction manual
for the PC (or access point).
For information on the default settings of the AIBO Wireless LAN Card, refer to its
operating instructions.

Install the AIBO Wireless LAN Card in AIBO.
For instructions for installing this card, refer to its operating instructions.

Insert the AIBO Messenger “Memory Stick” into AIBO.
For information on how to insert the “Memory Stick,” refer to the “AIBO”
ERS-210 operating instructions.

Press the pause button on AIBO to start up AIBO.
AIBO can now connect to the wireless LAN.

Changing AIBO’s network settings
To change the default settings on the AIBO Wireless LAN Card, follow the
procedure A or B below. (For the procedure B, the “Memory Stick” reader/
writer is required.)
A Connecting AIBO to a wireless LAN and changing the settings using a
PC on the LAN

Type the URL indicated below into the Web browser on the PC, open
the setup screen for AIBO, and then change the settings.
URL: http://10.0.1.100/SETUP.HTM
For details, refer to the operating instructions of the AIBO Wireless LAN Card.

Type the user ID and password.
Type your user ID and password (up to 8 alpha-numeric characters), which will be
used to authenticate your identity as a user when AIBO Messenger starts up.
Do not type the user ID or password if user’s authentication is not required.
Note
AIBO connects to the PC only when the user ID and password match.

B Changing the wireless LAN settings on the AIBO Messenger “Memory
Stick” (this procedure requires a “Memory Stick” reader/writer.)

Insert the AIBO Messenger “Memory Stick” into the “Memory Stick”
reader/writer.

Click the Start button in the task bar, and click Programs, AIBO
Messenger, then Wireless LAN Setup.
The Wireless LAN Setup window appears on the screen.

Select the “Memory Stick” drive and set up the wireless LAN.
Type your user ID and password (up to 8
alpha-numeric characters), which will be
used to authenticate your identity as a
user when AIBO Messenger starts up.
Do not enter them if user’s authentication
is not required.
Type in the IP address of the AIBO
Wireless LAN Card.

Setting up AIBO Messenger
Start up AIBO Messenger and set it up to use wireless LAN functions.

Click the Start button in the task bar, then click Programs, AIBO
Messenger, and AIBO Messenger in this order.
If the Owner Authentication dialog box appears on the
screen, enter the user ID and password that are set with the
procedure in “Changing AIBO’s network settings” (page
16), and then click OK.
AIBO Messenger starts up, and the AIBO Messenger icon is
displayed in the task tray.

Double-click the AIBO Messenger icon displayed in the task tray.
The Setup dialog box appears on the screen.
Note
When you click the AIBO Messenger icon displayed in the task tray with the right
button, and then click Setup in the menu, the Setup dialog box appears on the screen
also.

Set the IP address of AIBO Wireless LAN Card in the IP address tab.

Setting up the E-mail application to
be used with AIBO Messenger
AIBO Messenger operates in conjunction with the E-mail application that has been
set in Windows as the default E-mail program . To use your E-mail application
with AIBO Messenger, it must be set it up for Message Application Program
Interface (MAPI) use (see page 21).
(Normally, when you select the default Windows E-mail application, it is
automatically configured for MAPI use.)
Supported E-mail applications
To operate AIBO Messenger, you need either of the following E-mail applications:
• Outlook Express 5.5
• Eudora 4.3
Notes
If you select Eudora 4.3 as the default E-mail application, AIBO Messenger will operate
under the following constraints:
• The mail check function of AIBO Messenger is not available.
• You have to install Internet Explorer 5.5
• Even though AIBO Messenger detects a new mail message with its automatic mail check
function, it does not notify you of existence of a new mail message immediately after this
mail check function is executed. It notifies you of that when the mail check function is
executed the next time.
• When you start AIBO Messenger, Eudora 4.3 starts up automatically.

Setting up your E-mail application
Notes
• To operate AIBO Messenger, your E-mail application must be properly set to receive and
send E-mail.
• You can change the default E-mail application only when AIBO Messenger is not started
up.
• The MAPI setting procedure described below may not be compatible with your E-mail
application, depending on its version. Refer to the instruction manual or to the Help menu
of your E-mail application.
• AIBO Messenger does not allow the use of two or more E-mail applications.
Setting MAPI with Outlook Express

Click Options in the Outlook Express Tools menu.
The Options dialog box appears on the screen.

Click the General tab.

When the message “This application is NOT the default mail handler”
appears on the Default Messaging Programs box, click the Make
Default button.
Note
When “This application is the default mail handler” appears, MAPI is already set to use
Outlook Express. You do not have to change any setting.

Click OK in the Options dialog box.
The Options dialog box closes and your setting is saved.

Setting MAPI with Eudora

Click the Start button in the task bar, and click Settings and then
Control Panel.
The Control Panel appears on the screen.

Double-click the Internet Options icon.
The Internet Properties dialog box appears on the screen.

Click the Programs tab, and select Eudora from the E-mail drop-down
menu.

Click OK.
The Internet Properties dialog box closes and your setting is saved.

Troubleshooting
If you experience any of the following difficulties, use this troubleshooting guide
to correct your problem.
Should the problem persist, contact the AIBO Customer Link. (See page 3 for
details on the AIBO Customer Support.)
Symptom
AIBO Messenger
cannot be installed
from the supplied
CD-ROM.

Remedy
• There is not enough space on the hard disk.
t Check the hard disk free space. If several drives are
available, choose a hard disk with adequate space other than
drive C.
• The CD-ROM auto-play function is turned off.
t Execute “Setup.exe” file on the CD-ROM.
• Other programs are running.
t First, quit all programs and then set up AIBO Messenger
again.
• You are attempting to install AIBO Messenger to Windows NT/
Windows 3.1/Windows 95.
t AIBO Messenger runs only under Windows 98 Second
Editon/Me/2000 Professional. Install it to a PC running on
one of these available operating systems.
• You are attempting to install AIBO Messenger to Windows 2000
Professional as a Power User or User.
t To install this software, log on as an administrator or an
Administrators Group member.

Le logiciel AIBO Messenger est conçu exclusivement pour être utilisé avec
“AIBO” et lui permet de lire à voix haute des messages électroniques ou des pages
Web.

Le manuel relatif à AIBO Messenger se compose de deux parties :

Configuration minimale requise
Vous devez disposer de l’équipement suivant pour utiliser AIBO Messenger :
Environnement de réseau local sans fil
Votre AIBO et votre ordinateur doivent être équipés de la façon suivante.
Sur AIBO
Carte LAN sans fil AIBO ERA-201D1
Pour obtenir des informations sur l’installation de cette carte dans l’AIBO

Installation de AIBO Messenger
Installez AIBO Messenger sur le disque dur à partir du CD-ROM fourni.

Mettez votre ordinateur sous tension et démarrez Windows.
Remarques
• Quittez tous les autres programmes avant d’installer ce logiciel.
• Lorsque vous installez ce logiciel sous Windows 2000 Professional, connectez-vous en
tant qu’Administrateur ou membre du groupe Administrateurs.

Insérez le CD-ROM fourni dans le lecteur de CD-ROM.
Le programme d’installation démarre automatiquement.
Si le programme d’installation ne démarre pas, cliquez deux fois sur le fichier
“Setup.exe” du CD-ROM.
La boîte de dialogue permettant de procéder à l’installation apparaît à l’écran.

Cliquez sur Next (Suivant).
La boîte de dialogue User Information (Informations utilisateur) apparaît.

Saisissez votre nom dans la boîte User name (Nom utilisateur) et le
code d’accès du produit dans la zone Key code (Code d’accès), puis
cliquez sur Next (Suivant).
Le code d’accès est imprimé sur l’autocollant fourni.
Collez-le sur le boîtier du CD-ROM de façon à ne pas le perdre.

Précisez la destination de l’installation, puis cliquez sur Next (Suivant).
Normalement, ce logiciel est installé par défaut dans le dossier “C:\Program
Files\Sony\AIBO Messenger”.
Pour effectuer l’installation dans un autre dossier, cliquez sur Browse (Parcourir) et
sélectionnez le dossier de votre choix.
Lorsque vous cliquez sur Next (Suivant), la boîte de dialogue Choose Destination
Location (Choix de l’emplacement de destination) apparaît.

Choisissez le dossier dans lequel vous souhaitez ajouter l’icône du
programme, puis cliquez sur Next (Suivant).
Normalement, l’icône du programme vient s’ajouter au dossier “AIBO Messenger”.
Si vous préférez, vous pouvez sélectionner un dossier différent dans la liste Existing
Folders (Dossiers existants) ou saisir un nouveau nom de fichier dans la boîte de
dialogue Program Folders (Dossiers programme).
Le processus d’installation commence.
Lorsque l’installation est terminée, la boîte de dialogue InstallShield Wizard
Complete (Installation de l’assistant terminée) apparaît.

Cliquez sur Finish (Terminer).
L’installation est terminée. Passez ensuite à la configuration d’un réseau local sans
fil (page 14).

AIBO Messenger vous permet de piloter un AIBO depuis votre ordinateur à l’aide
d’un réseau local sans fil.
Connexion d’AIBO au réseau local sans fil

Modifiez les paramètres réseau sur l’ordinateur (ou le point d’accès)
pour qu’ils correspondent aux paramètres par défaut de la carte LAN
sans fil AIBO.
Pour obtenir des informations relatives à la modification des paramètres réseau,
reportez-vous au mode d’emploi de l’ordinateur (ou du point d’accès).
Pour obtenir des informations relatives aux paramètres par défaut de la carte LAN

Installez la carte LAN sans fil AIBO dans AIBO.

Saisissez l’ID utilisateur et le mot de passe.
Tapez une ID utilisateur et un mot de passe (jusqu’à 8 caractères alphanumériques)
qui seront utilisés pour authentifier votre identité en tant qu’utilisateur lors du
démarrage d’AIBO Messenger.
N’entrez pas l’ID utilisateur ou le mot de passe si l’authentification de l’utilisateur
n’est pas requise.
Remarque
AIBO se connecte à l’ordinateur uniquement lorsque l’ID utilisateur et le mot de passe
correspondent.

Démarrez AIBO Messenger et configurez-le pour utiliser des fonctions de réseau
sans fil.

sur Programmes, sur AIBO Messenger, puis sur AIBO Messenger dans
cet ordre.
Si la boîte de dialogue Owner Authentication
(Authentification du propriétaire) apparaît sur l’écran,
saisissez l’ID utilisateur et le mot de passe définis avec la
procédure “Modification des paramètres réseau
d’AIBO”(page 15), puis cliquez sur OK.
AIBO Messenger démarre et l’icône AIBO Messenger
apparaît sur la barre des tâches.

Configuration d’une application de
messagerie électronique à utiliser
avec AIBO Messenger
AIBO Messenger fonctionne en parallèle avec l’application de messagerie
électronique paramétrée dans Windows comme programme de messagerie
électronique par défaut. Pour utiliser votre application de messagerie électronique
avec AIBO Messenger, celle-ci doit être paramétrée pour utiliser l’interface MAPI
(Interface de programmation d’applications de messagerie) (voir page 20).
(Normalement, lorsque vous sélectionnez l’application de messagerie électronique
par défaut dans Windows, celle-ci est automatiquement configurée pour utiliser
l’interface MAPI.)
Applications de messagerie électronique prises
en charge
Pour utiliser AIBO Messenger, l’une des applications de messagerie électronique
suivantes est requise :
• Outlook Express 5.5
• Eudora 4.3
Remarques
Si vous sélectionnez Eudora 4.3 comme application de messagerie électronique par défaut,
AIBO Messenger fonctionnera avec les contraintes suivantes :
• La fonction de vérification des mails de AIBO Messenger n’est pas disponible.
• Vous devez installer Internet Explorer 5.5.
• Même si AIBO Messenger détecte un nouveau message grâce à sa fonction de vérification
automatique des messages, il ne vous en informe pas immédiatement après l’exécution de
cette fonction. Il le fait lors de l’exécution suivante de la fonction de vérification des
messages.
• Lorsque vous démarrez AIBO Messenger, Eudora 4.3 démarre automatiquement.

messagerie électronique
Remarques
• Pour utiliser AIBO Messenger, votre application de messagerie doit être paramétrée
correctement pour recevoir et envoyer des messages.
• Vous pouvez changer d’application de messagerie électronique par défaut uniquement
lorsque AIBO Messenger n’est pas démarré.
• Selon la version utilisée, la procédure de paramétrage MAPI décrite ci-dessous peut ne pas

Um AIBO Messenger verwenden zu können, benötigen Sie folgende Ausstattung:

Installieren von AIBO Messenger
Installieren Sie AIBO Messenger von der mitgelieferten CD-ROM auf die
Festplatte.

Schalten Sie Ihren PC ein und starten Sie Windows.
Hinweise
• Beenden Sie alle anderen Programme, bevor Sie diese Software installieren.
• Wenn Sie diese Software unter Windows 2000 Professional installieren, melden Sie
sich als Administrator oder als Mitglied der Administratorgruppe an.

Legen Sie die mitgelieferte CD-ROM in das CD-ROM-Laufwerk ein.
Das Installationsprogramm wird automatisch gestartet.
Wenn das Installationsprogramm nicht startet, doppelklicken Sie auf die Datei
„Setup.exe“ auf der CD-ROM.
Das Dialogfeld für die Installation erscheint auf dem Bildschirm.

Klicken Sie auf „Next“.
Das Dialogfeld „User Information“ erscheint.

Geben Sie Ihren Namen in das Feld „User name“ und den
Produktcode in das Feld „Key code“ ein und klicken Sie auf „Next“.
Den Produktcode finden Sie auf dem mitgelieferten Aufkleber.
Bringen Sie diesen Aufkleber mit dem Produktcode an der CD-ROM-Hülle an,
damit er nicht verloren geht.

Geben Sie das Installationsverzeichnis an und klicken Sie auf „Next“.
Normalerweise wird diese Software standardmäßig im Ordner
„C:\Programme\Sony\AIBO Messenger“ installiert.
Wenn Sie die Software in einem anderen Ordner installieren wollen, klicken Sie auf
„Browse“ und wählen einen Ordner aus.

Wählen Sie den Ordner aus, in den das Programmsymbol eingefügt
werden soll, und klicken Sie auf „Next“.
Normalerweise wird das Programmsymbol im Ordner „AIBO Messenger“

„Existing Folders“ auswählen oder ins Feld „Program Folders“ einen neuen

Die Installation beginnt.

Wenn Sie AIBO Messenger unter Windows 2000 Professional deinstallieren
wollen, melden Sie sich als Administrator oder als Mitglied der

Konfigurieren eines drahtlosen LAN
Mit AIBO Messenger können Sie einen einzelnen AIBO vom PC aus über ein
drahtloses LAN steuern.
Anschließen von AIBO an ein drahtloses LAN

Ändern Sie die Netzwerkeinstellungen am PC (bzw. Zugriffspunkt) so,
dass sie zu den Standardeinstellungen der drahtlosen LAN-Karte für
AIBO passen.

Ändern von AIBOs Netzwerkeinstellungen
Wenn Sie die Standardeinstellungen der drahtlosen LAN-Karte für AIBO ändern
wollen, gehen Sie wie in Verfahren A oder B unten erläutert vor. Für Verfahren
B ist ein Lese-/Schreibgerät für „Memory Stick“ erforderlich.
A Anschließen von AIBO an das drahtlose LAN und Ändern der

Benutzerauthentifizierung erforderlich ist.
Hinweis
AIBO kann nur mit dem PC verbunden werden, wenn die Benutzer-ID und das

Setzen Sie den AIBO Messenger-„Memory Stick“ in das Lese-/
Schreibgerät für „Memory Stick“ ein.

Starten Sie AIBO Messenger und konfigurieren Sie das Programm, damit Sie die
Funktionen des drahtlosen LAN nutzen können.

Klicken Sie in der Task-Leiste auf die Schaltfläche „Start“ und klicken
Sie dann in der angegebenen Reihenfolge auf „Programme“, „AIBO
Messenger“ und „AIBO Messenger“.
Wenn das Dialogfeld „Owner Authentication“ auf dem
Bildschirm erscheint, geben Sie die unter „Ändern von
AIBOs Netzwerkeinstellungen“ (Seite 15) definierte
Benutzer-ID und das Kennwort ein und klicken Sie auf OK.
AIBO Messenger wird gestartet und das AIBO MessengerSymbol wird in der Task-Leiste angezeigt.

Konfigurieren der E-Mail-Anwendung
zur Verwendung mit AIBO Messenger
AIBO Messenger arbeitet mit der E-Mail-Anwendung, die in Windows als
Standard-E-Mail-Programm eingestellt ist. Damit die E-Mail-Anwendung mit
AIBO Messenger verwendet werden kann, muss sie so konfiguriert werden, dass
sie die MAPI-Schnittstelle (Message Application Program Interface) verwendet
(siehe Seite 20).
Wenn Sie die Standard-E-Mail-Anwendung in Windows auswählen, wird diese
normalerweise automatisch für die Verwendung von MAPI konfiguriert.
Unterstützte E-Mail-Anwendungen
Für AIBO Messenger benötigen Sie eine der folgenden E-Mail-Anwendungen:
• Outlook Express 5.5
• Eudora 4.3
Hinweise
Wenn Sie Eudora 4.3 als Standard-E-Mail-Anwendung auswählen, funktioniert AIBO
Messenger mit folgenden Einschränkungen:
• Die direkte Mail-Abfragefunktion von AIBO Messenger steht nicht zur Verfügung.
• Internet Explorer 5.5 muss installiert werden.
• Wenn AIBO Messenger im Rahmen der automatischen Mail-Abfragefunktion eine neue
Mail erkennt, werden Sie davon nicht unmittelbar nach der Mail-Abfrage unterrichtet. Sie
erfahren von der neuen Mail erst, wenn die Mail-Abfragefunktion das nächste Mal
ausgeführt wird.
• Wenn Sie AIBO Messenger starten, wird Eudora 4.3 automatisch gestartet.

Konfigurieren der E-Mail-Anwendung
Hinweise
• Damit Sie AIBO Messenger verwenden können, muss die E-Mail-Anwendung für den
Empfang und das Senden von E-Mails konfiguriert sein.
• Sie können die Standard-E-Mail-Anwendung nur wechseln, wenn AIBO Messenger nicht
läuft.
• Das unten beschriebene MAPI-Einstellverfahren ist je nach Version Ihrer E-MailAnwendung möglicherweise nicht mit Ihrer E-Mail-Anwendung kompatibel. Nähere
Informationen finden Sie in diesem Fall im Benutzerhandbuch bzw. in der Hilfe zu der
E-Mail-Anwendung.
• Mit AIBO Messenger können Sie nicht zwei oder mehr E-Mail-Anwendungen gleichzeitig
verwenden.

Sollte eine der folgenden Störungen auftreten, versuchen Sie, diese anhand der

Sollte sich ein Problem auf diese Weise nicht lösen lassen, wenden Sie sich bitte an

Abhilfemaßnahme
• Es ist nicht genug freier Platz auf der Festplatte vorhanden.
t Überprüfen Sie, wie viel freier Platz auf der Festplatte
vorhanden ist. Wenn mehrere Laufwerke vorhanden sind,
wählen Sie ein anderes Laufwerk als C, auf dem genügend
Platz vorhanden ist.
• Die automatische CD-ROM-Startfunktion ist ausgeschaltet.
t Führen Sie die Datei „Setup.exe“ auf der CD-ROM aus.
• Andere Programme werden ausgeführt.
t Beenden Sie zunächst alle Programme und versuchen Sie
dann erneut, AIBO Messenger zu installieren.
• Sie versuchen gerade, AIBO Messenger unter Windows NT/
Windows 3.1/Windows 95 zu installieren.
t AIBO Messenger läuft nur unter Windows 98 Second
Edition/Me/2000 Professional. Installieren Sie das Programm
auf einem PC, der unter einem dieser Betriebssysteme läuft.
• Sie versuchen gerade, AIBO Messenger als Hauptbenutzer oder
Benutzer unter Windows 2000 Professional zu installieren.
t Melden Sie sich zum Installieren dieser Software als
Administrator oder als Mitglied der Administratorgruppe an.
