Year: 1994 Auction House: Bonhams Chassis number: GTD40A 8791 Date March 08 2004 Engine number: Unknown Registration number: Unknown Body number: Unknown Sold for: Fr. 96.942 A decade on from its final Le Mans win, the GT40 had become firmly established as one of the all-time great classic sports cars, leading to an increased demand for unmolested originals and the start of a replica-building industry. With just 107 GT40s being constructed at Ford Advanced Vehicles' Slough factory between 1965 and 1972, it is hardly surprising that a cottage industry of independent manufacturers arose to satisfy the continuing demand for replicas of Ford's charismatic Le Mans winner. Founded in 1984 by Ray Christopher, GT Developments soon established itself as one of the foremost manufacturers of accurate GT40 replicas, over 400 of which have been produced over the years. Constructed by GT Developments in 1994 and first registered 'L40 XGT' in the UK, this car is a replica of the 1966 Ford GT40 MkIIA model of which, apparently, only 12 were built. The 'XGT' registration mark reflects the numbering of the Alan Mann-managed UK team cars of 1966 which were 'XGT 1', 'XGT 2' and 'XGT 3'. In 1994 'L40 XGT' came first in the GT and Saloon Category at the Carcraft Concours d'Elegance at Sandown. In the late 1990s the car belonged to Grand Prix-winning Italian F1 driver Michele Alboreto and was tested by him for Auto Oggi magazine (October 1998 issue, copy available). Carlo Talamo bought the car from Alboreto circa 2000. This right- hand drive GT Developments GT40 is constructed around a full multi-tube spaceframe clad in glassfibre coachwork featuring driver's door 'Gurney dome' for extra headroom. The engine is a recently rebuilt 302cu in (5.0-litre) Ford V8 bored to 306cu in and driving via a five-speed GTD transaxle. Claimed maximum output is 385bhp, good enough for a top speed in excess of 160mph. Suspension is by double wishbones front and rear, with up-rated anti-roll bars and Spax adjustable dampers, while the all-round servo-assisted disc brakes incorporate dual circuits for safety. The wheels are three-piece Halibrand replicas shod with Firestone tyres. The car is finished in cobalt blue with dual marigold stripes, while the dark blue-carpeted interior features ventilated blue leather-upholstered seats, full roll cage, fire extinguisher, four-point Willans harnesses, 'MPH' speedometer and Momo aluminium gearlever knob. A mere 4,737 miles have been covered from new, and the vehicle is presented in excellent condition throughout. It is offered with fully listed specification, owner's instruction manual and copy UK V5 registration document. Local taxes will be liable if the car remains in Switzerland. The ex-Michele Alboreto, 4,737 miles from new1994 GTD Ford GT40 CoupeCoachwork by GT Developments Chassis no. GTD40A 8791
