VICKY’S DRIVING TEST
Vicky was 17 and she lived in
Manchester. And it was the day of her
driving test. Her mother said to her,
“You should have some breakfast before you
take tour driving test.”
“I can’t eat, I’m too nervous,” said Vicky.
When she arrived at the Test Centre, her
heart sank (1). Her examiner was Mr. Crow, the
severest of all the driving examiners. He
never smiled. People said he didn’t like
girls. Vicky answered all his questions on
the Highway Code. “Good,” she thought.
“Now I must drive very carefully.”
There was a lot of traffic in Manchester
that day. They drove past the cathedral
towards Deansgate station.
“Please turn right at the next crossroads,”
said Mr. Crow.
Suddenly a man ran into the road. He
was screaming like a maniac. “Stop, please,
stop!” Vicky braked hard. The man said,
“Quick, you must drive my wife to the

hospital. She is having a baby and there are
no taxis.” A woman got in the back with the
man and Vicky started driving quickly. The
nearest hospital was the Manchester Clinic
on Oxford road.
“Go faster,” said the man. She was now
driving over the speed of 30 miles per hour.
“Go up this street on the left!” he
ordered. “It’s quicker.”
“I can’t,” said Vicky. “It’s no entry.”
“You must!” said the man. Vicky had to
drive on the pavement to get past a car. Then
there were traffic lights changing to red. “Go
on!” said the man. Vicky drove on. Mr. Crow
was silent. At last they arrived at the hospital.
“Thank you and goodbye!” said the man
and he entered the hospital with his wife.
Vicky looked at the examiner.
“I’ve failed, haven’t I?” she said sadly.
