Jonathan Doughty, FCSI FCSI Worldwide President We Share, We Support, We Inspire. Today I am writing to you from Madrid, Spain. In 1991 this incredible City was host to the Middle East Peace talks when Israel sat down with its Arab neighbours for the first time in 43 years. President Bush led the successful discussions by kick starting the conference with a speech in which he stated that “compromise is essential to peace.” Now we move forwards 24 years and Madrid has been, for our little Society, the host for another series of landmark meetings. I expected the engagement planned around the FCSI EAME Conference to be productive and rewarding. I came to Madrid with high expectations, hoping that we could move forward on the Global and Divisional Partnership Program with the Educational Foundation and achieve real progress on a number of key issues. Most importantly I wanted to “clear the air.” Transparency and communication are essential to me if we are going to move our FCSI world forward. So as I stepped off the plane on Tuesday evening this week, it was with high hopes that I traveled to the Melia Castilla Hotel in Madrid. I love history and for our “little” Society this “Peace Meeting” in Madrid was going to be as important, as the 1991 meeting was for that part of the world. I am pleased to report that we have had an incredibly positive number of meetings. The Educational Foundation and a select group of their Board Members, led by John Cornyn, joined us for an informal dinner on Tuesday evening and we worked hard together to find out how we can work better together, we discovered our new path and, by Wednesday morning, we had met again and agreed the key terms for our collaboration. The two Boards from the Educational Foundation and FCSI Worldwide showed a maturity, tenacity, friendship and speed which you all would have been very proud of. As a result we now have a framework agreement, key terms, an outline financial model and a timescale that will see us all being able to share this Global and Divisional Partnership Program in its complete form by September this year. This exceeded my own expectations in every way and was achieved by compromise and friendship and by open discussion and debate. I also have to report that the Worldwide Board meeting was a huge success. I am immensely proud of the team that have supported the Society and again, we achieved more than I could ever have hoped for. Our succession plan is firmly in place, new and innovative developments are underway and exciting new membership benefits are round the corner. All members of the Worldwide Board acted in the best interests of the Society, whilst representing their own Divisions. The Worldwide Board meeting was followed by the EAME Board meeting yesterday, as it is, after all, their conference we are attending in Madrid. This meeting also exceeded expectations, and whilst there are some challenges around communication and the work that goes on in EAME, I have no doubt that under Martin Rahmann’s guidance, the excellent and engaged EAME Board of Trustees will make huge steps forward again. So, to my final point for today. The conference started this morning and I am delighted to confirm that I will be staying until the end of my term as President of this Society. I will step down in December 2015 with the knowledge that we have excellent succession planning, an innovative new programme of young and new person engagement underway, a real “added value” proposition for our Allied Members for their Divisional and Global relationships with FCSI and a governance and management process that is communicative, open, transparent and honest. We have made huge progress from where we were last week and I apologise if I caused anybody unnecessary concern or worry. All I ask in return is that people communicate openly and directly across the world. I am always contactable so please let me know if you wish to discuss anything. None of this could have been achieved without all the people who played their part in this. The members of the Educational Foundation, the Worldwide and EAME Board members and the administrators and “support” structure that helps us function so well, all mixed together with a little passion and emotion! After all, it is Madrid…………… Have a great weekend. I am off to join the FCSI EAME Conference - the best yet.
