Bio: Lord Gus O'Donnell Strategic Advisor, TD Bank Group Lord Gus O’Donnell was appointed Strategic Advisor to TD Bank Group in June 2012. In this role, he will provide TD with advice and counsel on a range of economic, government, regulatory and strategic matters, traveling between Canada, the U.S. and the United Kingdom. As Cabinet Secretary, Lord O’Donnell was the top civil servant in the U.K. from 2005 to 2011, serving under Prime Ministers Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron. He stood down from this position at the end of 2011, and was appointed to the House of Lords in January 2012. Prior to his role as Cabinet Secretary, Lord O’Donnell served as Permanent Secretary of the United Kingdom Treasury from 2002 to 2005. He was the UK’s Executive Director on the boards of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, including during the Asian financial crisis of 1997 to 1998 before he was recalled by the New Labour Government to be the Managing Director of Macroeconomic Policy and International Finance, responsible for fiscal policy and international financial issues. He also served as press secretary to Prime Minister John Major from 1990 to 1994. Lord O’Donnell was the Treasury Representative on the Bank of England’s newly established Monetary Policy Committee which sets interest rates in the UK and was head of the Government Economic Service. Lord O’Donnell represented the UK as a member of the European Union Monetary Committee and later their Economic and Financial Committee which was responsible for the design of the euro. Later in his career, he oversaw the production of the 'five economic tests' analysis which underpinned the UK's decision not to join the euro. Lord O'Donnell studied economics at the University of Warwick and obtained his Masters in Philosophy at Nuffield College, University of Oxford, before lecturing in political economy at the University of Glasgow.
