Announcing active/active support
A recent web release of alternative MSA controller firmware includes important
new features, including active/active controllers and support for additional
operating systems.
The MSA ships with a single controller and active/passive firmware installed. If
you plan to install an additional MSA controller and are interested in active/active
processing, consider the following:

active/active heterogeneous operating systems: Windows, HP-UX, Linux (Servers
with indicated operating systems may have concurrent access to an MSA1500.)
active/active homogeneous operating systems: NetWare, OpenVMS,
Tru64 UNIX, SCO UNIX, VMware (Servers with indicated operating systems may
not have concurrent access to an MSA1500. All attached servers must be from
the same operating system family. Interoperability with other StorageWorks
arrays (EVA and XP) is supported, but not other operating systems.)
Whether you are adding an MSA1500 to a new SAN, a SAN segment with other
active/passive devices, or a SAN segment with other active/active devices, you
must examine your network, understand the requirements of active/passive and
active/active configurations, and then determine which version firmware is best for
your environment.
For example, in a SAN with already-installed active/passive devices, you may
want to (or be required to) migrate those existing active/passive devices to
active/active. In addition, you may want to (or be required to) change to a new
multipathing software tool that supports active/active.
In addition to the information in this notice, be sure to confirm the latest list of
supported operating systems and any configuration restrictions for the different
firmware versions. See the two versions (active/active and active/passive) of the
MSA1500 compatibility guides, available on the MSA1500 website:
http://www.hp/com/go/msa1500cs.
To upgrade this new stand-alone MSA1500 to
active/active:
When installing this new MSA1500 to a new SAN or SAN segment with no
existing MSA1500 or other array controllers, obtain the active/active items from
the Web, and then install and upgrade the MSA1500.
1. Go to the MSA1500 website: http://www.hp.com/go/msa1500cs.
2. From the Software, firmware & drivers page, obtain the following:
• active/active version Support Software CD ISO image
(burn the ISO image to a blank CD)
• active/active version controller firmware files or ISO image
• release notes for the Support Software CD and the firmware files
3. From the Technical documents page, obtain the following:
• Installation guide (October 2006 or later)
• Firmware updating guide
4. Install and configure this new MSA1500 as described in the installation guide.
When instructed:
• Install MSA1500 components on the servers using the Support Software CD
created in step 2.
• Upgrade the firmware on the MSA using the files obtained in step 2 and the
updating guide obtained in step 3.

To upgrade already-installed MSA1500 and
this new MSA1500 to active/active:
When adding this new MSA1500 to a SAN with existing active/passive
MSA1500 and/or other array controllers, first migrate all existing servers and
MSA1500 to active/active, and then install and upgrade this new MSA1500.
1. Go to the MSA1500 website: http://www.hp.com/go/msa1500cs.
2. From the Software, firmware & drivers page, obtain the following:
• active/active version Support Software CD ISO image (burn the ISO image
to a blank CD)
• active/active version controller firmware files or ISO image

3. From the Technical documents page, obtain the following:
• Migration instructions for your operating system (Windows, Linux, and HP-UX
only; OpenVMS and Tru64 UNIX are newly supported operating systems, so
there are no already-installed MSA1500 to migrate.)
• Installation guide (October 2006 or later)
• Firmware updating guide
4. Upgrade any existing MSA from active/passive to active/active as described in
the migration instructions, including:
• Complete all prerequisites.
• Upgrade the servers and any existing active/passive MSA to active/active.
5. Install and configure the new MSA as described in the installation guide.
When instructed:
• Install MSA components on the servers using the Support Software CD
created in step 2.
• Upgrade the firmware on the MSA using the files obtained in step 2 and the
firmware updating guide obtained in step 3.
To use the pre-installed active/passive
firmware:
1. Locate the following documents, shipped with the MSA:
• Configuration overview poster
• Installation guide
2. Install and configure the MSA as described in the installation documents.
When instructed, upgrade to the latest version of active/passive firmware. Do
not upgrade to active/active.

Sistemi operativi omogenei attivo/attivo: NetWare, OpenVMS, Tru64 UNIX,
SCO UNIX, VMware. I server con i sistemi operativi indicati possono non
disporre di accesso simultaneo ad un sistema MSA1500. Tutti i server collegati
devono appartenere alla stessa famiglia di sistema operativo. È supportata
l'interoperabilità con altri array StorageWorks (EVA e XP), ma non con altri
sistemi operativi.

Nel caso in cui si stia aggiungendo un MSA1500 ad una nuova SAN, ad un
segmento SAN con altri dispositivi attivo/passivo o ad un segmento SAN con altri
dispositivi attivo/attivo, è comunque necessario esaminare la rete in uso,
comprendere i requisiti delle configurazioni attivo/passivo e attivo/attivo, quindi
determinare quale versione di firmware sia più appropriata per l'ambiente in uso.
Ad esempio, in una SAN con dispositivi attivo/passivo precedentemente installati,
è possibile eseguire (o che venga richiesto di eseguire) la migrazione dei
dispositivi attivo/passivo ad attivo/attivo. Inoltre, è possibile passare (o che venga
richiesto di passare) ad un nuovo strumento software per percorsi multipli in grado
di supportare la configurazione attivo/attivo.
