My name is Ion.
Qui aurait pu imaginer le destin qui
m’attendait : naître sous la dictature,
devenir handicapé de la vue par
accident, fuir en urgence mon pays pour
avoir un peu trop rêvé ?
Who could have imagined the fate
that awaited me: my birth under a
dictatorship, the loss of my eyesight
through an accident, my sudden escape
from my homeland to seek a future that
was a little too idyllic?
One thing is certain: fate is like all
the criminals that I listen to today for
the Belgian federal police. With a little
willpower, there’s always a way to dodge
its tricks. The person who taught me that
is a close and loyal childhood friend. That
friend is literature. Without her, I probably
wouldn’t be what I am now, here, among
you.

Une chose est certaine, le destin, c’est
comme chaque criminel que j’écoute
aujourd’hui pour la police judiciaire
belge : avec un peu de volonté, il y a
toujours moyen d’éviter ses mauvais
coups. Celle qui m’a appris cela est une
amie d’enfance proche, fidèle. Cette
amie, c’est la littérature. Sans elle, je ne
serais probablement pas ce que je suis,
ici, parmi vous.
