NOTE OF INTENT
After two solos works, P=mg and
Diagnostic F20.9, I wanted to confront
myself to the exercise of the duet in
order to explore this time how two
can become one. By focusing my
research exclusively, on a physical
and corporal work, my intention for
this creation is to limit myself on only
one restriction : permanent contact
between two bodies. Since I
started choreographing, I work in
order to develop an original way
of creating and innovate in my
movement research mixing hip
hop and contemporary dance.
In general, contact dance in
hip hop doesn’t have its space, I
saw in this a field to be explored.
Moreover, the obsession of
contact, wether real or virtual, takes
more and more space in our daily
lives through the exponential growth of
means of communication and through
social networks. It evolves, maybe, at the
prejudice of another form of contact, linking
beings, as it is c’est paradoxically in an era
of «over-contact» where harmony becomes
rare and we listen less to each other. This work
brought me to question myself on fundamental
principles such as life in communion and the
spiritual contact between two souls. I wanted to push
this aspect to its extreme in order to better analyze. In
this sense I imagined what would be the steps that two
entangled bodies to one another would go through : how
could they go forward together ? What place do we allow
the other one in such situation ?
Developing movements, architectural or burlesque, I chose to
accompany this work to the sound of Alexandre Dai Castaing
to whom I especially commissioned the introduction, and
also Nils Frahm’s, rising star of contemporary electronical
music to whom I borrowed music pieces Hammers et Says.
The result of this give an original performance as
technical as poetic. Duality, fusion, coexistence remain
the master words of this work both soft and powerful.

JANN GALLOIS RAFAEL SMADJA
After many years studying music at the conservatoire,
Jann Gallois entered in the dance world in 2004 through
hip hop doors. Very soon she was known by many
choreographers such as Sebastien Lefrançois, Sylvain
Groud, Angelin Preljocaj, Sebastien Ramirez, Kaori
Ito, and collaborated with each of them for a series of
creations between 2008 and 2014.
In 2012 after a strong professional experience as a
performer, Jann decided to found her own company, Cie
BurnOut, and to write her first own solo piece, P=mg
for which she was 9 times awarded by national and
international prizes, such as Paris Young Talent Prize and
Beaumarchais-SACD Prize in Paris, Solo-Tanz Theater
Prize in Stuttgart, Masdanza Prize in Canary Islands,
Machol Shalem Prize in Jerusalem, and Gdansk solo
dance contest Prize in Poland.
In 2015, Jann Gallois confirmed her artistic signature,
combining hip hop and contemporary dance, by creating
once again a solo-piece called Diagnostic F20.9, for which
she was named “Best Choreographic Hope” of the year
by the German newspaper Tanz. In 2016, she created
Compact with her main partner Rafael Smadja.
Self-taught by nature, Rafael Smadja meets
hip-hop culture in 1998 and in 2003 he left
the world of martial arts for dance art. In
order to get the bases and foundations,
he went in search of the roots of hip hop
dance and encounter pioneers such as Mr
Wiggles, Ken Swift, Future, Brian Green,
PopinPete or Mamson.
Between 2012-2015, he worked with the
danish company Next Zone directed
by Lene Boel for the piece Human
Planet Shaman, Yann Marussich, stage
director Tali Serruya, choreographers Olé
Khamchanla, Bouziane Bouteldja and
Stéphane Fortin.
For Cie Tensei, wich he founded in 2012,
Rafael Smadja creates Fleuve, then Presk
in 2013, Cactus in 2014, Domino in 2015,
work for whch he is nominated to the
Beaumarchais – SACD prize in Paris. He
finally creates Identité en Crescendo at
Festival TRAX in Saint-Etienne in June 2016
PRESS REVIEW
« Jann Gallois magnetizes bodies, irresistibly. »
Rosita Boisseau, Le Monde
« [...] only twenty minutes but carved until the fold of the toes, sighs and reliefs, with intelligence and a
remarkable sensitivity. »
Ariane Bavelier, Le Figaro
« In Compact […] her research on the body and her outlook on human cross in a way that is always relevant
and surprising. […] Until now, [Jann] Gallois has impressed by her capacity to transform a physical constraint
into a choreographic invention. »
Thomas Hahn, Danser Canal Historique
« To see Jann Gallois dance, is like being in front of an hybrid body, where the subtlety of her articulations and
the delicacy of her limbs compete with an internal and very powerful force. »
Nathalie Yokel, Ballroom Revue
