Broadband worldwide
• 60% of all broadband lines are DSL (46.7m)
• 77m broadband lines worldwide on 30 June 2003
• DSL lines grew by 30% in the first half of 2003, cable modems by
16.4%
• Cable modems grew faster than DSL in North America; DSL grew
faster almost everywhere else.
• The world's major economies are starting to converge on similar
levels of broadband take-up. Six of the 'Group of 7' countries are now
in the Top Ten for number of broadband lines (see below). Italy is
number eleven.
• The UK appears in the charts at last, as fastest growing major
country, up by 63% in the half year.
• South Korea is still far ahead at 22.9 broadband lines per hundred
people, followed by Hong Kong. But Canada is at 13.3 percent and
several European countries around 10 or approaching it. This means
that in Canada, for example, about 35% of households have
broadband.

Le Japon (Nov. 2003)
• 66.8 million people accessing the Internet using cellular
phones (e.g. e-mail) (this number is growing by nearly
0.51 million a month),
• 9.59 million ADSL users (growing by about 361,000
per month)
• over 2.37 million CATV users (growing by about
47,000 a month),
• and over 756,000 FTTH (optical Fiber To The Home)
users (growing by about 68,000 a month),
• the number of ADSL subscribers has gone from 19 in
Jan. 2000 to 16,194 in Jan. 2001 to 1.788 million in Jan.
2002 and exceeded 5 million in Nov. 2002.

L’Italie
• En Italie: FastWeb a déployé un réseau FO à très haut débit à Milano,
Torino, Genova, Bologna, Napoli, Roma et Reggio Emilia donnant accès
aux résidentiels et aux entreprises à des débits de 10 Mbps à 100 Mbps
et proposant une intégration des services:
• voix (appels gratuits entre les abonnés de FastWeb),
• Vidéocommunication et communication de PC à PC entre les abonnés
de FastWeb,
• data et Internet à 10 Mbps symétrique,
• TV
Exemples de prix:
Résidentiels:
• Voix, data et Internet 10 Mbps (mail et antivirus) et TV pour
110€/mois

La Suisse
La ville de Genève fournit pour un quartier un accès
gratuit Metro Ethernet sur FO à 100 Mbps; ce service
est gratuit pour la période des tests et intègre des
services voix (gratuité d’appels entre abonnés), data et
Internet.
Après 1 an de tests ils préconisent le développement
d’un modèle économique pour généraliser ce type de
service.

• Cleveland :
OneCleveland (a non-profit organization) a consortium founded by eight Cleveland area
institutions and government entities who joined forces to bring high-speed communication
access to the region, announced that City Signal Communications was selected as a key
provider for the fiber backbone that will ultimately connect end users and carry
OneCleveland’s data traffic.
Scope: delivering advanced information technology capabilities to achieve
community priorities for learning, job training, research, economic development,
and community access to culture, healthcare and e-government.

The project has raised questions here about the role of government
With a $470 million price tag, the project is considered one of the most ambitious
efforts in the world to deploy fiber optic cables
The cities involved argue that reliable access to high-speed data is so important to
their goalsof improving education and advancing economic growth that the project
should be seen as no more controversial than the traditional public role in building
roads, bridges, sewers and schools – as well as electric power systems, which are
often municipally owned in the Western United States
The network is expected to be available to 723.000 residents in 248;000
households and 34.500 businesses.
Prices : basic high-speed Internet access is expected to cost about $28 a month.
