BRABANT ARDENNES 7 Ardennes Chaumont- 8 BRABANT ARDENNES Gistoux The green heart of the province of Brabant Wallon pulsates amid hilly landscapes, woods, valleys and fields. Its villages stand witness, each in their own way, to the province’s semi-rural character. Brabant Wallon is home to 100 km of signposted footpaths set in woods, fields and meadows, crossing the pretty valleys of Train and Glabais and their bubbling tributaries, the protected Inchebroux wetlands and the Champtaine nature reserve, stretching from the centre of Chaumont to the rural village of Longueville. On your travels, you will encounter many 18th and 19th-century farms standing proudly in the countryside. Some are still in operation today, while others have been converted into private homes. Beautiful churches, such as Saint-Bavon church in Chaumont, complete the local architectural heritage. You will also come across the Ronvau sports complex, set inside a magnificent, sandy quarry, at the edge of protected wetlands. Gourmets and food fans enjoy a warm welcome at our restaurants and various tasting venues. While you’re here, don’t miss a visit to the local pastry makers to sample the fabulous Chaumont-Gistoux sugar tart! Its development began with the construction of two railway lines, but its status as a worldrenowned university town came with the arrival of the Louvain Catholic University in 1971. Last but not least, the new scientific park with its leading edge businesses and services and Esplanade shopping mall earned the site its title of Wallonia 21st century technology park. To make the most of your visit, take time out to stroll around the pedestrian streets of the five quarters of Louvain-la-Neuve, where the local inhabitants and around 20,000 students enjoy the combined pleasures of town and country: the green belt of Bois de Lauzelle is just a stone’s throw from the «Musée de Louvain-la- Neuve» and «Musée Hergé» museums, «Théâtre Jean Vilar», cinemas and the vast Blocry sports complex. Ottignies - Louvain- la-Neuve boasts a packed programme of scientific, cultural and festive events, held at new venues such as the Aula Magna and Grand’Place, or at ancient, restored sites, such as «Ferme du Biéreau» farm (connection from Ottignies railway station), home to a cultural centre dedicated to music. In the early 20th century, it prompted the installation of the «Papeteries de Genval» paper mill and the development of tourism, with holidaymakers keen to sample the pure air and water cures of Genval Lake. A multitude of hotels popped up between the railway station and village of Genval at the time. This popularity earned the site its title of «Pearl of Ardennes Brabançonnes». Tucked away in a rocky relief, the romantic Genval Lake is a coveted holiday and walking venue. Its gastronomic restaurants and high-quality hotels have made this a renowned and exceptional site. And naturally, this place where water reigns has its own water and fountain museum - the «Musée de l’Eau et de la Fontaine». Rixensart royal castle, ranked among the finest in Belgium, is now open to the public, as is Froidmont farm, now home to a parish church, library, cultural centre and children’s museum called the «TILT». Take time out to discover the old quarter of Mahiermont. If you’re a bird lover, the valleys of La Lasne and L’Argentine are genuine ornithological reserves, where you can enjoy a variety of walks and guided tours. And why not treat yourself to a «Vî Paurin» tart, wander round the art exhibitions, attend a vertical archery contest or succumb to the pleasures of water sports on the lake… the quality of life here in Rixensart is truly delightful. This little, provincial town brims with charm. You will love the pedestrian walkways running along the river Dyle, Saint John the Baptist church and its 50 bells, the weekly markets, and various heritage events, such as «Le Grand Tour» and «Le Jeu de Jean et Alice». «All the roads in the world lead to my town» wrote the Wavre-born poet Maurice Carême. The main building houses the burgomaster’s office, local services and the board room. A statue by the internationally-famed sculptor Léon de Pas, placed at the entrance, invites you to stop and behold. In the inner courtyard, a statue of a little girl playing hopscotch (La Marelle) pays tribute to the painter and sculptor René Julien, who lived in the town. CHÂTEAU D’EAU Set on Chaumont plateau, this Art Deco-style castle built in 1923 is the work of the architect F. Henne, who painted it white to highlight its Rue du Gros Médart 1325 Chaumont-Gistoux Opened in 1803, the 324 service linking Courcelles near Charleroi and Sart-Risbart formerly stopped at Corroy-le-Grand railway station. The station has now been converted into a private house, but you can still see the «Corroy-le-Grand» sign at the front. The railway lines have been replaced with a pretty footpath. Avenue de Merode 75 1330 Rixensart Wavre HÔTEL DE VILLE The impressive Town Hall (Hôtel de Ville) is an ancient church of the Order of Discalced Carmelites. Take a moment to admire the stained-glass window on the frontage, representing Sire Jean, Dame Alice and Le Maca. These three figures played a major role in the history of Wavre. In 1222, the local bourgeoisie, traditionally represented by Le Maca, received the Charter of Franchise and Liberties from the Lords of Wavre, symbolised by Sire Jean and Dame Alice. This charter meant that the town was free and would hence pay less tax. The statue of Le Maca by J. Godart (1962), representing a mischievous adolescent, personifies the rebellious spirit of the people of Wavre. Not to be missed too: «La Crapaute». This sculpture of Le Maca’s female companion, located in the rear courtyard of the CPAS offices, Rue de Bruxelles, was created by Yvon Mattagne. CUBITUS Make way for the famous comic strip dog Cubitus! Situated Place Albert I in Limal, this statue by Y. Cauwenberghs was inaugurated in October 2002 and pays tribute to Dupa, the father of the famous dog, who spent 30 years of his life in Limal. 23 FONTAINE DE L’EUROPE This fountain (E411 exit 6), with its water jets spouting onto a huge sphere, is a replica of the one found in Sainte-Maxime (Var-France). LOCAL HERITAGE GARE DU VICINAL À CORROY Religious heritage RELIGIOUS HERITAGE 24 Chaumont-Gistoux ÉGLISE SAINT-JEAN-BAPTISTE An oratory was erected in Gistoux in the 13th century (1255), where Godefroid de Chaumont, his vassals and the inhabitants of the hamlet instituted a chaplaincy in honour of Our Lady. The ancient oratory was destroyed and replaced by a neo-Classic construction in 1841, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Restored in 1899, the church received many donations, including a dozen stained-glass windows, a clock, a way of the cross in relief (by the artist Roger Versteegen), statues and various decorations. ÉGLISE SAINT-BAVON This church, and probably the chapel of the ancient Château de Chaumont, stand on a rocky spur between the village and the valley. Built in mainly neo-Gothic style, combined with a touch of Romanesque, the building comprises two separate sections, divided by a small tower: the first section features a triple nave of five bays and the sacristy, while the second comprises a flat chevet choir in sandstone blocks dating back to the 13th century. Take a moment to admire «Le Martyre de Saint-Etienne» painted by Wavreborn artist Polydore Beaufaux, which received the Rome Prize. Rue Lahaut 1 1325 Chaumont-Gistoux Parking rue Goffinet Chaussée de Huy 214 1325 Gistoux ÉGLISE SAINT-ETIENNE The church interior is in carved oak. The Louis XVI altar is topped with a magnificent sculpture representing the Assumption of the Virgin. Eight paintings representing the life of Christ and the Virgin, said to be the work of Lens de Nivelles, adorn the walls. The Baroque organ (listed) dates back to the 18th century. Magnificently restored in 1996 by the «Artisans Facteurs d’Orgues et Clavecins de Tournai» (Bernard Couvreur), it has now regained its former youth and shine. The association «Les Amis de l’Orgue de Longueville» aims to familiarize the local inhabitants and visitors from far and wide with the instrument’s restoration project. «Les Amis de l’Orgue» hosts organ concerts, together with other musical events on the romantic, contemporary, vocal, choir and chamber music theme... Dated 1775, this church is home to a remarkable painting – the «Adoration of the Three Kings» by Van den Heuvel , painted in 1940 –, together with the tombstones of the Beeckman and Rolly families. The organ is now listed, but the church remains open outside services. The association «Corroy-le-Grand-Orgue» is committed to restoring and publicizing the organ, in partnership with the Roi Baudouin Foundation. Rue de l’Eglise 1325 Corroy-le-Grand ÉGLISE SAINT-MARTIN The ancient chapel was replaced in 1876, after the castle was rebuilt in 1864. Today’s brick and stone construction is preceded by a square tower topped with an 8-sided arrow. The exterior is hybrid neo-Roman style. The presbytery dates from the second half of the 19th century. Rue de Neusart 30 1325 Vieusart ÉGLISE SAINT-MARTIN Rue du Centre 1 1325 Longueville The former church, built on the site of the presbytery garden, possessed three stainedglass windows, representing knights, their ladies and their patron saint. Donated in 1528, these fine windows were sold to the Duke of Aremberg in 1837, who installed them inside Eglise d’Enghien church. The new church was built at the time. Its square tower, topped with a flat pyramid and a square prism in the form of an arrow, precedes the neo-Classic main building. You will enjoy touring the church, presbytery (1773) and outbuildings, wooded grounds and graveyard. The graveyard features several remarkable tombstones, including those of the Hénin-Liétard family and the family of the Marquis of Dion, who invented the Dion-Bouton motor vehicles. Place Communale 1 Rue des Frères Poels 1325 Dion-le-Val ÉGLISE NOTRE-DAME ET SAINT-NICOLAS The former neo-Classic building burnt down in 1908 and was replaced by the current church – an exact replica of the original - three years later (according to the 1764 drawings). It features a magnificent frontage, harmoniously blending brick and stone. In the 18th century, the town ran out of money to maintain and renovate the building and the inhabitants asked Baron Philippe de Varick for help. The Baron undertook to rebuild the church in exchange for taxes. Rebuilt on the site of the old church in 1771, the new church remained virtually intact until 1962, when it was shut down due to a lack of maintenance. It was carefully restored in 1971 thanks to private donations. The blue stone altar and tabernacle, both by Jean Willame, add to the beauty of the building. Notre-Dame church in Bossut (1782) is famed for its listed organ originating from Florival abbey. Place Ernest Dubois 25 1390 Grez-Doiceau Avenue Fernand Labby 1390 Bossut LA CHAPELLE ROBERT ÉGLISE NOTRE-DAME DE MOUSTY ÉGLISE SAINT-REMI Located in Pécrot, this chapel celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2001. It was erected in 1701, on the site of a poplar tree that miraculously protected Robert Tiri, the bursar of Florival abbey, from lightning. A stone set above the oak entrance door pays tribute to the event. The chapel is built in whitewashed bricks. It measures 6.3 metres wide, 6.5 metres high and 10.4 metres in depth. A tree fell during a storm in 1999, damaging the roof. This building, whose crypt dug under the choir was a place of worship for pilgrims and the sick, is the region’s oldest church (first quarter of 10th century). It has been a listed monument since 1952. Built in classic style, the current Eglise Saint-Rémi was built in 1785, in replacement of an older building ravaged by fire in 1726. It contains remarkable furniture and several tombstones leaning against the outer walls. The presbytery is definitely worth a look. Both buildings have been listed since 1952. Ottignies Louvain-la-Neuve ÉGLISE DE CÉROUX Designed by the architect Moreau and built in 1848, the church tower topped with an arrow is one of the landmarks of Céroux. This neo-Gothic style building stands on Place Communale – a popular events venue – lined with veteran lime trees. ÉGLISE SAINT-PIE X Also referred to as Eglise du Petit-Ry, this round and unusual sanctuary, designed by the architect Pinsart, who also signed the underground basilica in Lourdes, is far from being as small as its name suggests! The stonework symbolizes the «Valley of Tears» mentioned in the Genesis. The furniture originates from the chapel of the Pavilion of the Holy See at the Expo 58; the ornamental ceramics are by Max Van der Linden. Chemin du Meunier 1330 Rixensart ÉGLISE SAINT-PIERRE The region’s only church built in bricks and reinforced concrete, Eglise Saint-Pierre dates back to the early 20th century, and more precisely to the same era as the Papeteries de Genval paper mill. The tower bells are visible from the outside. Rue de la Station 30 1332 Genval Wavre BASILIQUE MINEURE NOTRE-DAME Originally a chapel, then a Benedictine priory, sold at the time of the French Revolution, this building is the only remnant of the monastic complex occupied until 1797 by the monks of Afflighem. It became a parish church in 1805 and was proclaimed a «basilica» in 2000. This historic place of worship has certainly come a long way… The sanctuary’s oldest element is the Marian chapel extending along the left aisle and accessible via an elegant, Louis XIV-style, wrought iron gate. This oratory was reworked in the 18th century, but you can still see the walls and large sandstone blocks of the original, 12th century Romanesque building. Notre-Dame de Basse-Wavre was invoked to combat the plague, famine and war. A 17th century statue of the Virgin and Child and «miraculous reliquary» are paraded through the streets every year during the Grand Tour procession. The basilica is open to the public outside services. The chapel underwent various modifications in 1859 and around 1910. Chapelle de Grimohaye, also called Chapelle Notre-Dame des Affligés or Chapelle du Loup, is a listed monument (Royal decree of March 26th, 1980). Rue de Grimohaye 1300 Limal ÉGLISE SAINT-JEAN-BAPTISTE This tall church, comprising several floors, has been burnt down and restored several times. Now a listed monument, it is located in the heart of the town. Points of interest include the Louis XV pulpit, Louis XVI wood panels, 16th century baptismal fonts, stone font dated 1632, and various ceramics by Max Van der Linden. The original organ was delivered in 1844 by the renowned Brussels-born organ maker Hippolyte Loret. It was extensively damaged during WWII then finally restored to its former beauty and inaugurated in 1999. The church boasts no less than 50 bells, installed in Easter 2003. The bell ringer’s cabin on the 5th floor features fine stained-glass windows retracing the town’s history. One floor higher, 43 little bells ring out the happy «We love our town» song from «Le Jeu de Jean et Alice». 7 large bells are located one floor below. The church is open outside services and you can also visit it on Heritage Days (Journées du Patrimoine) or enjoy a guided tour with the Ardennes Brabançonnes Syndicat d’Initiative and Central Booking Office (Maison du Tourisme). In 1988, they gave birth to two children: Gigi and Gus. The word «Crayeux» (chalky) comes from the nickname given to the men who worked in the chalk quarries of Grez. «Blancs Gilets» (white waistcoats) was the nickname given by the inhabitants of the hamlets adjacent to Grez to doctors, pharmacists, teachers and notaries – who all wore white waistcoats on Sundays! GUS ET GIGI Gus and Gigi are the children of Marie Crayeux and Télesphore. These little giants were born in 1988. They were restored to their former glory when the «Fête des Géants» (Giants Fair) was reinstated in August 2001 in Grez-Doiceau. Gus was endowed with a fishing rod and Gigi was given some typical Pétanque «boules». Gus and Gigi also take part in the carnival organised in Néthen. LULU «The Godfather of Gus & Gigi» Created in 1994 in tribute to Lucien Froidebise, a comedian and actor from Bonlez. GUDULE ET PHILIBERT The giants of the village of Bossut. SERGE JEAN-JOSEPH LE BRIQUETIER YSENGRIN The creator of the Grez giants. First appeared in 2003 in memory of Serge Renoir (deceased in 2002). Jean-Joseph le Briquetier – the first giant of Ottignies - Louvain-la-Neuve – was born in 1987. Dressed in a blue smock and a red scarf with white dots, he pays tribute to the ancient brick factory in the Bon Air quarter of Céroux-Mousty. He was given a lady friend, Charlotte, in 1988. Legend tells that birds saved children terrorized by this big, bad wolf from Buston wood. These two stooges never miss a chance to rival with their elders. Ottignies - Louvain-la-Neuve Ottignies Louvain-la-Neuve FINE DE SIROUX This lady farmer, christened on September 10th, 1989, evokes the rural past so dear to Céroux. She wedded the giant «Tave de Stimont» from Ottignies on May 30th, 1993. FRANÇOIS LE ZOUAVE This giant was created in honour of the first soldier who fell during the battle of the Dyle in May 1940. This character pays tribute to the fishing tradition in the ponds of the Buston quarter in Limelette. Rixensart LUCIEN DEMANET (BOURGEOIS-RIXENSART) Created in 1997, Lucien pays tribute to Alderman Lucien Demanet who decreed the hamlet of Bourgeois a free town. He set up a parish choir school in Bourgeois with the «Petits Chanteurs à la Croix de Bois». Lucien Demanet died in 1982. 45 GiANTS & MASCOTS LAUREL ET HARDY LE PÊCHEUR DU BUSTON Wavre JEAN ET ALICE This pair of giants represent Lords Jean and Alice. Legend tells that in 1222, they offered the town’s bourgeoisie the Charter of Franchise and Liberties. LE MACA ASTÉRIX ET OBÉLIX DES CHAMPS This figure symbolizes the rebellious spirit of the people of Wavre. The statuette of Le Maca at the entrance to the Town Hall was sculpted in 1962 by Jean Godard. The giant Asterix was created on April 1st, 2000. He weighs 105 kilos and measures 3.6 metres. MELLIE DE BASSE-WAVRE The fiancée of the giant Maca. BAPTISTE Created for the 100th anniversary of the «Institut Saint-Jean-Baptiste». 46 GiANTS & MASCOTS T.: +32 (0)10 22 24 60 LA CRAPAUTE Represents the young, female soul mate of Maca. The statuette lies in the rear courtyard of the CPAS offices, Rue de Bruxelles. LE GÉANT MACA Refers to the rebellious little character who symbolizes the town. According to «Le Jeu de Jean et Alice», it was he that received the Charter of Franchise and Liberties in 1222, authorizing the free circulation of people and goods and doing away with the toll tax payable at the entrance to the town. 47 MARCH Events Programme 48 FEBRUARY EVENTS PROGRAMME CARNIVAL (Louvain-la-Neuve) An integral part of Wallonian student tradition, this procession takes place on a Wednesday in the first fortnight of February so schoolchildren can attend!
